Where: Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Race start time: 1.10pm (GMT) on Sunday 1 December
TV coverage: live on Sky Sports F1 and highlights on Channel 4
Fight for third place
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes may have won the Formula 1 titles but there’s still plenty of points to play for in the final race of the season.

Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas have the top two spots in the drivers’ championship secured so the fight for third place will be a major focus in the day-night race in Abu Dhabi.

Max Verstappen’s victory at the Brazilian GP on 17 November moved him to third in the drivers’ standings. He has 260 points while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is fourth with 249.

With an 11-point advantage over Leclerc, Verstappen can seal third spot if he finishes first or second in Abu Dhabi. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel is confirmed as the 2019 fifth-place finisher.

Speaking ahead of the final race Verstappen said: “After a great weekend in Brazil, the team is in good spirits to have one final go at it in Abu Dhabi.”

Mercedes driver Bottas will start at the back of the grid because of an engine-related penalty.

Battle for sixth
After their podium places in Brazil Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz are currently sixth and seventh in the championship, level on 95 points. They will battle for sixth with Red Bull’s Alex Albon, who has 84 points.

Departing drivers
Sunday’s grand prix will see Nico Hulkenberg and Robert Kubica drive their final races for Renault and Williams respectively.

Kubica said: “Abu Dhabi is quite a difficult track, but we will try to optimise the car the best we can for the last race of the season. It will be my final grand prix with Williams, and so I would like to put everything together for the boys and for the team.”

Hulkenberg added: “Just to be clear, I don’t feel like I’m retiring. As a race driver, I don’t feel I’m leaving Formula 1. I might not be on the grid [in 2020], but if there is an opportunity, I’m going to be ready.”

After nine months and 35 races, it all comes down to one weekend to decide the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title. Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, an Kevin Harvick will duke it out over 267 laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 17 in the Ford EcoBoost 400.

The formula for winning the NASCAR championship is simple: the highest finisher among those four takes home the trophy. It almost certainly means they'll have to win the race, like every titlist since the format was reconstructed in 2014… but they don't have to do it. In theory, the 2019 Cup champion could be 30th on Sunday as long as they finish ahead of the other three who are eligible.

In this 16-driver, tournament-style format it's the 1 seeds that have made it all the way to this final round. The four drivers eligible for the series title have won the most races this year and would 2-3-4-5 in the standings without a playoff. (Joey Logano, the reigning series champion, would have a slim lead but was eliminated last weekend at Phoenix Raceway).

Three of the four drivers eligible have already won a Cup title; the fourth has the most active victories without one. Each wheelman has already made an impact on the sport but a 2019 series title could elevate their legacy.

Let's look at what's at stake for the Championship 4.

If Denny Hamlin wins...

Earns his first career title in 14 years running Cup. Sheds his label as the Mark Martin of his era (the infamous NASCAR Hall of Famer who was second in the title chase five times without winning)
Wins the championship one year after going winless for the first time since 2005. This time last November, Hamlin was near tears in the press room, parting ways with crew chief Mike Wheeler and forced to relinquish his pole-winning pit stall to teammate Kyle Busch. Now, he's fighting Busch on Sunday for his first title.
Hands Chris Gabehart his first championship in his first year as a Cup crew chief.
Becomes the first driver to win the title and the Daytona 500 in the same year since Jimmie Johnson in 2013.

If Kevin Harvick wins...

Becomes the first driver with two titles under this current playoff format.
Earns his second championship in six years after going 0-for-13 with Richard Childress Racing.
With a win, earns his 50th career victory in Cup, moving to a tie for 12th on the all-time list. He joins Jimmie Johnson as the only drivers with multiple Cup titles.
Overcomes a slow start in which he didn't win until the 20th race of the year (New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July).

If Kyle Busch wins...

Earns his second championship in five years and his first running all 36 races. (Busch won in 2015 despite ankle and foot injuries that kept him out for almost three months)
Becomes just the second regular season points champion (Martin Truex Jr., 2017) to earn the title under this format.
Overcomes a 21-race winless streak that haunted an inconsistent playoff run after starting the year 4-for-14 in the Cup Series.
Adds clout to an argument he's the best driver of the decade in a year he's won 13 times across NASCAR's top three series, passing Richard Petty with 207 victories overall spread across Cup, Xfinity and Trucks.

If Martin Truex Jr. wins...

Earns his second championship in three years, the most dominant stretch since Jimmie Johnson's five titles from 2006-10. Truex was second in 2018.
Captures the title in his first year with a new team, Joe Gibbs Racing, after his former team (Furniture Row Racing) closed up shop the end of last year.
Guarantees he'll be NASCAR's win leader (seven thus far) for the second time in three seasons.
Finishes one of the most remarkable career turnarounds in the sport. Truex was left for dead five years ago, earning just one top-5 finish with FRR to cap off a disappointing first nine years running Cup. His totals since: 24 wins, 69 top-five finishes, a dozen poles, the 2017 series title and a Southern 500.

Ford EcoBoost 400

Time: Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. ET

Track: Homestead-Miami Speedway (Homestead, Fla.)

TV: NBC

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing
Denny Hamlin's dominant win at Phoenix locked him in the title race and gave Joe Gibbs Racing a NASCAR first: three of the four slots in the Championship 4. JGR drivers have now combined for 18 victories this season in 35 races, helping Toyota clinch their third manufacturer's title in four years.

Who's at the Back: Chase Elliott
On the flip side at Phoenix was Elliott, the sole Round of 8 contender who failed to finish when a flat tire knocked him into the wall halfway through the race. It capped off one of the worst NASCAR semifinal rounds we've seen under the current format: 36th, 32nd, and 39th with two of those finishes caused by wrecks.

News Briefs

A flurry of NASCAR Cup Series Silly Season news dominated the start of Championship Weekend proceedings. Stewart-Haas Racing announced Thursday they would not renew the contract of driver Daniel Suarez for 2020; Suarez was emotional in describing how the deal fell apart at the last minute. Instead, it'll be NASCAR Xfinity Series title contender Cole Custer getting the nod for 2020, running the No. 41 Ford full-time. A little further down the NASCAR garage, veteran Michael McDowell said he expects to be back with Front Row Motorsports in 2020 just days after Matt Tifft announced he was leaving the team. (A seizure had sidelined Tifft since Martinsville). Finally, JJ Yeley announced he was returning to Cup full-time, driving one of three cars fielded by Rick Ware Racing next year. Read the full rundown of Championship Week news here.

That news filtered down to the NASCAR Xfinity Series as well. Cup Series rookie Daniel Hemric was signed to drive for JR Motorsports in a limited Xfinity Series schedule (21 races) next season. Jeb Burton (11 races) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Homestead in March) round out the driver lineup for the No. 8 car.

NASCAR and NBC Sports announced a new paid streaming service called NBC Sports Gold in a bid to showcase some of the racing in lesser series. For $5 a month, the service replaces fanschoice.tv and will cover everything from ARCA to the Whelen Modified Tour to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events.

NASCAR by the Numbers

9

Playoff races this season won by nine Cup Series drivers championship eligible.

9th

The best points position of any Hendrick Motorsports driver (William Byron). That would be the worst performance for HMS in the final standings since 2000.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Say it all together... the Championship 4. The series champ has won this race all five years under the current format, which began in 2014. Every driver in this quartet has also won at this racetrack since 2013. The only problem is you can only fit so many of them (maybe two?) on a daily fantasy roster. But stuff as many of them as possible on there.

Middle Tier

Kyle Larson remains the driver with the best chance to win Homestead outside the Championship 4. In six career starts here, including his first in Cup back in 2013 Larson has never finished outside the top 15. He's led 322 laps the past three years and captured three of the past six stages.

Aric Almirola has established a little momentum toward the end of the season, earning a second-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway two weeks ago. He's run well at Homestead with Stewart-Haas Racing, earning a ninth-place finish in 2018 and could ride championship teammate Harvick's coattails to the front.

Lower Tier

Don't sleep on the retiring drivers this weekend at Homestead. Paul Menard and David Ragan may not have the same clout as some of the more famous names we've seen leave the sport in recent years, but putting it all on the line one last time should count for something. Remember, it was just last season Matt Kenseth ran sixth in the final Cup race of his career (Roush Fenway Racing). Ragan was 20th and Menard 25th in this race last November.

What Vegas Thinks
The Championship 4 are each about equal entering this weekend's race. Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch have a slight edge (11/4) with Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick sitting at 3/1.

Kyle Larson is the best of the rest at 8/1 odds. I'd recommend against a longshot in a race where non-playoff drivers seem afraid to take a chance for fear of disrupting the championship race.

What I Think
It's the quiet one who makes a big impact this weekend. Martin Truex Jr. takes control of the race and cruises to victory for his second Cup championship in thre

After eight months and 34 races in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, it's finally time to whittle down the playoff field to this year's Championship 4. ISM Raceway in Phoenix hosts the penultimate race of the season, a Round of 8 elimination which sets up the grand finale next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick enter the weekend sitting pretty. They've both earned spots in the Championship 4 already with wins at Martinsville Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway, respectively. That leaves six drivers fighting for two spots to join them while that duo sits back and enjoys the show.

On paper, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano are in the driver's seat. Busch is 22 points ahead of the fifth-place cutline, won the last Cup race at ISM Raceway and is riding a streak of four straight Championship 4 appearances. Logano, the reigning Cup champion, holds a 20-point edge and has won here as recently as the fall of 2016.

But those point cushions go out the window if any of the four challengers behind them win. Denny Hamlin, sitting fifth in the standings, has the best shot at success: he's been victorious at ISM Raceway before (2010) and was fifth back in the spring. Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott haven't won here yet but all of them have finished inside the top 3.

"Just because we're in a tough spot and it's our last chance to make it to Homestead doesn't mean it's over," Elliott said Friday, speaking to a win-and-advance mentality. "You just have to approach this week as a new one and know if we win on Sunday, we can race again next week and have a shot at it. It's just not over until it's over."

It just won't be easy. Truex, Harvick, Busch and Logano are bidding to be the first repeat Championship 4 since the current NASCAR postseason format was retooled following the 2013 season. This quartet has piled up half (17) of the 34 Cup wins this year and would be 1-2-3-4 in points without the playoff reset. It's hard to see Busch and Logano making a championship-killing mistake.

But that's why they run the races, right? Logano, who had already clinched by this point last season, failed to finish last year's Phoenix race. He's also caused some drama with Hamlin after the two traded sheet metal and shoves at Martinsville. Can the No. 22 team in particular keep their bumper clean and their driver focused on the ultimate prize?

Busch isn't immune to criticism either, riding a 20-race winless streak and an inconsistent playoff performance. His media sessions have been a constant source of venting frustration to the point some question whether he's having off-track issues, too. Can the regular season points champion, riding that bonus to this point hold it together enough to push on through?

Fans can get frustrated by a focus on the playoffs when 40 drivers still start every race. But this year's postseason explains why it's hard to divert your attention: each of the first eight races have been won by drivers still championship eligible. Whatever the reason, from fear of crashing a title contender to simply not having speed drivers outside the championship hunt have been invisible this postseason. There are two races left to change the narrative but early results aren't promising: playoff drivers posted the top four speeds in final practice.

It's a big race in the Phoenix desert, ISM preparing to heat up even further next year as they host the championship finale for the first time. We'll see what type of appetizer their 2019 race can serve up.

Bluegreen Vacations 500

Time: Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. ET

Track: ISM Raceway (Avondale, Ariz.)

TV: NBC

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Stewart-Haas Racing
It's been a down year for Stewart-Haas Racing; only one of their four drivers, Harvick, has visited victory lane. So a 1-2-3 finish at Texas was welcome news, locking Harvick into the Championship 4 while reminding competitors this multi-car team hasn't fallen far from their perch atop the Ford fleet.

"The day that you stop thinking about how you're going to evolve," Harvick said after his win, "And get stuck in today and what you did yesterday is the day that this sport will leave you behind. You have to be very open-minded; this is a progressive sport and you have to keep up with that progression on a weekly basis because it changes rapidly.

"Those are the types of things that I have really enjoyed this year, even though we haven't been the dominant car. We've figured out how to win."

They certainly have. Harvick's four wins in the last 15 races (after starting the year 0-for-19) are the most of any Cup driver during that stretch.

Who's at the Back: Jimmie Johnson
The hope for Hendrick Motorsports is their seven-time championship driver is getting all his bad luck out of the way before 2020. After ending his 15-year postseason streak, Johnson has flashed some speed with new crew chief Cliff Daniels but struggled to finish races with three wrecks the last four weeks. The man with more postseason wins than anyone else hasn't even earned a top-5 finish during a playoff race since Dover in the fall of 2017.

News Briefs

Cup Series owner Roger Penske purchased the NTT IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week in what's arguably the biggest motorsports story of the year. It's the first time ownership of the 2.5-mile oval has changed in over 70 years. Penske, whose team is the most successful all-time in the Indy 500, will now face conflict of interest questions taking over an entire series where he's the reigning champion. Early indications are Penske is interested in more NASCAR/IndyCar doubleheader weekends as a way to enhance the popularity of both series. He's also been a strong advocate of guaranteed starting spots in the Indy 500 for full-time competitors.

Luke Lambert is leaving his crew chief position at Richard Childress Racing next season. Lambert, currently the head wrench for rookie Daniel Hemric, will move over to Roush Fenway Racing and work with Chris Buescher on the No. 17 Ford. He's got one career victory in the past seven seasons, paired with veterans Jeff Burton and Ryan Newman before moving to Hemric in 2019.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series driver lineup is coming into focus for 2020. Joe Gibbs Racing made the biggest announcement of the week, adding young Riley Herbst to their lineup full-time for 2020. The 20-year-old racer has four top-10 finishes in nine career Xfinity starts and will drive the team’s No. 18 Toyota. Some smaller teams made announcements, too; Ray Black Jr. is returning to SS-Green Light Racing full-time and BJ McLeod Motorsports is retaining both Matt Mills and Vinnie Miller. Then, on Friday at Phoenix, Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Jesse Little announced he’ll move up to Xfinity full-time with JD Motorsports.

NASCAR by the Numbers

3

Drivers who have combined to win the last eight fall races at Texas Motor Speedway. Johnson won four in a row from 2012-15, then Carl Edwards won in 2016 before Harvick took over and swept the last three.

26

Lead changes at Texas this past weekend, the most aside from Talladega Superspeedway since the Coca-Cola 600 Memorial Day weekend.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

I know it's cliche but playoff drivers are the name of the game here as we enter the season's homestretch. They're eight-for-eight in notching wins thus far during the postseason and ISM Raceway should be no exception.

Kevin Harvick has the best track record here, earning a track record nine career victories here. He's also riding a streak of 12 straight top-10 finishes but beware; he's expensive and enters the weekend in a win-or-bust mentality with his spot at Homestead-Miami Speedway already secure.

A cheaper option for you might be Ryan Blaney, whose track record at ISM Raceway is mediocre by comparison (one top-5 finish in seven starts). But that top-5 performance, a third, came back in the spring after Blaney started from the pole. At the very least, expect him to lead a handful of laps which translate into a good chunk of bonus points for your roster.

Denny Hamlin would be next on my list, followed by Chase Elliott. Just know both have crashed here in the past while attempting to come from behind to make the Championship 4. High risk, high reward potential here.

Related: Best ISM Raceway Drivers for DraftKings

Middle Tier

Aric Almirola, fresh off a season-best second-place finish at Texas, has four straight top-10 finishes at ISM Raceway. Expect him to keep building momentum for 2020 while becoming an inexpensive option for your roster.

Alex Bowman posted top-5 speeds in practice and nearly won at ISM Raceway in 2016 while subbing for former No. 88 driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. My only hesitation is the three career DNFs for Bowman in eight starts: he's crashed out here twice in a row.

Lower Tier

David Ragan has three straight top-25 finishes at ISM Raceway and is preparing to hang up his helmet at the end of the season. Remember when Matt Kenseth got hot for the final few races of 2018 with Roush Fenway Racing? There's something to drivers stepping up their game when retirement nears.

Ty Dillon has a quiet streak of five top-20 finishes in his last six ISM Raceway starts with Germain Racing. 15th in the spring, Dillon hasn't led a lap here in his Cup career but a finish like that will be plenty good enough for the bottom end of your roster.

What Vegas Thinks
Kyle Busch holds the edge with 3/1 odds to win Phoenix. Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick trail behind at 5/1.

A combination that has been the winning package on 10 occasions this season, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes took an unlikely victory in Mexico, which few had predicted.

The strategic strengths of the Silver Arrows, paired with Hamilton's ability to adapt to the demands of a race, turned damage limitation into a triumphant victory.

Ferrari stepped on its own toes once more and Sebastian Vettel was forced to settle for a solid but unfulfilling second place.

Valtteri Bottas rebounded from his qualifying shunt, and after a heroic turnaround by the 2019 constructors’ champions in fixing his W10, earned a third place. Had his weekend been less troubled, he could well have been fighting for victory.

Red Bull’s self-confessed final chance for a race win this season was wasted as Max Verstappen went from mistake to calamity, while Alex Albon continued to make his case for a 2020 seat.

And so to Austin, where Hamilton could repeat his 2015 feat and win on US soil at the Circuit of the Americas, where just four points would earn him a Juan Manuel Fangio-beating sixth crown.

Here is a team-by-team preview ahead of the 2019 United States Grand Prix.

The win in Mexico was victory number 100 for Mercedes-Benz in F1. Of those, 62 have come courtesy of Lewis Hamilton.

Four points — earned with an eighth-place finish —are all Hamilton needs to confirm title number six, which would move him clear of Fangio and within striking distance of Michael Schumacher’s seven.

Barring catastrophe, the 34-year-old will likely go well at one of his favoured hunting grounds in COTA.

Hamilton has only failed to win twice in Austin since the circuit joined the F1 calendar in 2012, Bottas is in need of a miracle it seems.

The Finn's slim chances shrunk further in Mexico to almost nil, after a qualifying shunt put him on the back foot before the lights even went out.

Simply put, to win the title, Bottas is in a must-win situation until the flag falls in Abu Dhabi and Hamilton cannot score four points before then.

And at a circuit the four-time champion has always gone well at, it could be game over for Bottas 2.0.

Charles Leclerc took yet another pole to bring his career total to seven, and an unbeatable pole tally this season.

But once more, it wasn’t to be on Sunday and another race went begging for Ferrari, as Mercedes out-thought the strategists at Maranello.

Team principal Mattia Binotto was mindful that the team has now squandered several races that could well have gone in favour of the Scuderia.

“We are encouraged by the fact that we now have a package that allows us to fight for wins on most tracks. It’s a significant improvement on how we started the year.

“We need to use the last three races of this season to further develop as a group and to operate in the sharpest possible manner in order to be better prepared for next year. It is a very tight field at the front and every detail matters if we want to win more often. Austin will hopefully give us a good opportunity to do so.”

Last season Kimi Räikkönen scored his final Ferrari victory in convincing fashion, leading from the first corner.

With the top-end speed of the SF90 still very ahead of the rest of the grid, the long run to Turn 12 may be just enough for the Scuderia to edge itself in front once more.

Alexander Albon has out-scored Max Verstappen since joining Red Bull.

The statistic serves to underline just how well Albon has adapted to his new surroundings in his rookie season, as well as the poor period the Dutchman is going through.

Verstappen would have been on pole and in a great position to claim another win for the team, but several mistakes put paid to that.

Contact with Hamilton at Turn One, and later Bottas, and a clumsy move on Kevin Magnussen were some of the lowlights for the Red Bull that was fighting through the field rather than for the win.

Last season's race at COTA had Verstappen defend valiantly against Hamilton to deny him the 2018 title on US soil; a similar performance fighting for the podium will likely be the best the team can hope for this weekend.

Albon will do his hopes of retaining his Red Bull seat for 2020 no harm by continuing on his impressive run of form.

One of McLaren’s poorer races this season, no points and another retirement for Lando Norris was a difficult result to take in Mexico, considering the progress the team has seemingly been making as of late.

Carlos Sainz will be making his 100th F1 start on Sunday, and the Spaniard says he is looking forward to the challenge of the Austin, Texas circuit.

“The US Grand Prix is a very special event for me, marking my 100th Formula 1 start," he said. "To be an F1 driver has been my dream and my ambition for as long as I can remember, so to be hitting my 100th race at only 25 years old is a really significant moment.

“After a tough Sunday in Mexico, the whole team is willing to hit the track again at Austin this week. It is important that we keep focused and working hard until the last race. COTA is one of the most exciting tracks on the calendar and always delivers interesting racing, with the entire first sector being very fun to drive in these F1 cars.”

Team principal Andreas Seidl was eager to underline how McLaren cannot afford to lose focus now, particularly as their current position of fourth in the constructors' championship — the unofficial title of best of the rest — is the team's to lose.

“After a Sunday to forget in Mexico, we head north to the US in anticipation of an exciting race," he said. "We’re looking to learn from last weekend and come back stronger for the final three races. We know that the constructors’ is not done until it's done, so we need to keep it in our hands as we see the season out

Sergio Perez saved one of his best performances this year for his home event, no doubt pleasing the 300,000+ spectators who reportedly attended the Mexican Grand Prix this year.

Since Singapore, Racing Point has gradually been improving its performances on race day and the seventh place in Mexico for Perez was a demonstration that the team is trending upward.

“Finishing as best of the rest is realistically the most we could have achieved,” the Mexican driver said.

“It showed our strengths as a team and shows the progress we are making with this car – even in the final part of the year. I feel we can fight for points in all of the remaining races.”

Team principal Otmar Szafnauer agreed with Perez’s assessment and believes the team can take its form from Mexico forward also.

“We’re at that point in the season where every point is hugely important. We’re in the thick of this midfield battle and the six points we scored in Mexico have helped us close the gap on fifth place to just nine points.

“The car was strong in Mexico and we will work hard to ensure similar pace in Austin this weekend.

In addition to the F1 car demonstrations, which will include live runs, the Festival will also feature musical events, opening with a live performance of the Formula 1 theme by Bryan Tyler and his orchestra integrated with an F1 demo run to create an exhilarating aural experience.

The party opens on Tuesday, October 29 with a two-day Hollywood Ride of Fame car exhibition along Hollywood Boulevard, featuring multiple F1 and other exotic cars from across the ages. But the headline act is on Wednesday evening, when the drivers arrive – and the cars are fired up.

While the F1 cars and stars form the centerpiece, there will also be plenty to enjoy among the support acts, which include Red Bull parachutists, stunt bikes, acrobats, and a live DJ and MC.

Time: Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. ET
Track: Kansas Speedway (Kansas City, KS)
TV: NBC
Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Chase Elliott is the defending winner of the Hollywood Casino 400. It remains his only victory on an intermediate track in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

For Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports to salvage their season, Elliott may need to have lightning strike twice.

The equivalent of stock car racing’s New York Yankees is on the verge of a very un-Hendrick-like accomplishment. Elliott, William Byron, and Alex Bowman are on the outside of the playoff cutline looking in heading into Sunday's (Oct. 20) race at the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Kansas Speedway. All of them are at least 18 points behind the last driver in, Joey Logano, meaning they'll almost certainly need a win to advance.

And if not? HMS will go without a driver in the Round of 8 for the first time since the current playoff format was adopted in 2014. It would almost certainly mean they’ll fail to put a driver inside the top 5 in points for a second straight year.

The last time Hendrick encountered that type of back-to-back slump? That was back in 1999 and 2000. Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson (who failed to qualify for the playoffs this year) wasn't even a full-time regular in the Cup Series yet. Byron and Elliott were still in preschool.

"This is the toughest round of 12 I've been a part of in my four years," Elliott said Friday. "Really, I think all 12 teams and drivers are pretty good that are left right now. I think we knew coming into this round that it wasn't going to be easy. We knew it was going to be tough to move on. That's where we're at, it's tough. Here we are."

That said, this four-car organization has reasons to be hopeful. Bowman ran second in the Kansas race in May, leading 63 laps. Elliott was fourth in that event and led 45 laps of his own. But both struggled during Friday's practice along with Byron; none of the trio (along with Johnson) cracked the top 10 in either session.

Losing Hendrick from the Round of 8 would leave just one Chevrolet driver left in the playoff field (Kyle Larson from Chip Ganassi Racing). It's a bitter pill to swallow in the second year of the new Camaro chassis, trailing badly in the manufacturer's race after only seven wins in the year's first 31 races. And with limited changes in the 2020 rules package before the expected debut of NASCAR's Gen-7 car in 2021? Relief may not be coming for this group anytime soon.

"You can't lose sleep over the fact that we've tried to do all we can to get to this point," added William Byron Friday. "That's just the situation that we're in and we just have to go do our jobs. That's just how I try to approach it, but it's stressful for sure."

Stressful and surprising if Hendrick fails to clear the bar altogether for the next round of NASCAR's 2019 playoffs.

Who's at the Front: Ryan Blaney
Blaney benefitted from a game of Survivor: Talladega Superspeedway as virtually the entire field was involved in some sort of crash last Sunday. Blaney's No. 12 Ford emerged from the wreckage for his third career win, each of them under bizarre circumstances. He was the benefactor of pit strategy back at Pocono Raceway in 2017, then the third-place driver at Charlotte last fall when Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. crashed in front of him.

But the end result places him in the Round of 8, one of three Team Penske drivers (Brad Keselowski, Logano) likely to advance.

Who's at the Back: Daniel Suarez
Suarez just missed out on the 16-driver playoffs, falling short by one position to teammate Clint Bowyer. Since then, Bowyer has surged while Suarez has slumped badly, throwing his long-term future with Stewart-Haas Racing into question. He's got two finishes of 30th or worse in the last three races, including a bad wreck at Talladega last weekend, and has fallen behind Johnson in the 17th-place battle for "Best of The Rest" in points.

News Briefs

Clint Bowyer's future was firmed up this week with a 2020 contract extension to continue driving for Stewart-Haas Racing. Bowyer's won twice in three seasons with the team, making the playoffs in back-to-back years although a winless 2019 left his future a question mark through much of the summer. He's currently 11th in points and could potentially still advance to the Round of 8 under the right circumstances.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will move to JTG-Daugherty Racing to drive for their Chevrolet Cup team in 2020. Stenhouse replaces Chris Buescher, who is moving to Roush Fenway Racing, in what effectively becomes a ride swap between the two drivers. It'll be the first Cup ride outside of RFR for Stenhouse, driver of the No. 17 Ford since the start of the 2013 season. He has two wins and just one playoff appearance in seven years of Cup competition.

NASCAR and ISC completed their merger this week. The deal puts together both the business arm of the sport and several of its tracks as consolidation continues into one large private company. Could a buyout of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. and its dozen Cup dates on the schedule be next on the horizon?

NASCAR by the Numbers

5th

Finish for Michael McDowell at Talladega last Sunday, tied for his best of the year. Two top-5 runs for the underdog driver is a new season-high for him in the Cup Series.

17

Races since Kyle Busch last visited Victory Lane in the Cup Series. That's typically not a long streak for a driver but considering Busch's 13 wins combined in Cup, Xfinity, and Gander Outdoors Truck series competition this year? It's a bit unusual.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Kansas Speedway has typically been Kevin Harvick's playground as of late. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver just needs to learn how to close the deal at this facility. Don't be fooled by runs of 12th and 13th in his last two starts; he could easily have won both those races, leading a total of 180 laps between them. A pit road speeding penalty and a suspected flat tire, respectively, killed his chances for victory lane in those events. They say bad news typically comes in threes but I feel like you'll be able to trust him this time around.

A solid alternative might be Team Penske's Brad Keselowski. The May winner has five straight top-15 finishes here, including this win, and is looking to re-establish momentum entering the Round of 8.

Related: Best Kansas Speedway Drivers for DraftKings

Middle Tier

Clint Bowyer doesn't have the greatest history at his hometown track. But a fifth-place finish back in the spring was his best run here in six years; borrowing setup and practice notes from teammate Harvick can only help. Sprinkle in the pressure of trying to make the next round, add the boost of a contract extension and that equals a potential surprise winning performance here.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. isn't in the playoffs. He isn't even with this Roush Fenway Racing team next season. But what he does have is three top-11 finishes in the last five Kansas races, paired with 22 laps led. There are plenty of options in this range but Stenhouse might offer a lower price than the rest, an under-the-radar pick for maximum value in daily fantasy.

Lower Tier

Rookie Daniel Hemric was 18th in his first Kansas Cup start but ran strong in Friday's practice sessions. Hemric is auditioning hard for a 2020 spot in this division and recently lost out on an opportunity with JTG-Daugherty Racing, increasing his sense of urgency. A top-10 run is not out of the question here as the clock keeps ticking.

Another rookie, Matt Tifft, has cleaned up his act as of late, posting two top-20 finishes in his last four starts. He was 21st at Kansas back in May, a reasonable result with middling Front Row Motorsports and will be another good max-value pick at a lower price.

What Vegas Thinks
Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick lead the way with 9/2 odds at Kansas, followed by Kyle Busch at 5/1.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. leads the best of the longshots at 100/1.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America Roval 400 on Sunday. The Roval produced the wildest finish of 2018, when Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. collided before the finish line, which allowed Ryan Blaney to capture the checkered flag. Formerly a main-oval race at Charlotte, the race is now conducted over the infield road coarse and had that format for the first time in 2018.

Chase Elliott has been fairly quiet lately. He has four top fives in the last 15 races. However, Elliott has shown his talent on road courses in his career. He has dominated the last two races at Watkins Glen and has been hit or miss at Sonoma.

A year ago he was able to finish sixth in the Roval. The 8-1 price tag is fair for Elliot. In Elliot’s last seven road-course races, he’s produced three top fives, including two wins. He’s also led the second-most laps with 144, trailing race favorite Martin Truex Jr., who has 180 laps led over that same span. Elliott will be boom or bust Sunday, but the price is right.

Kyle Larson (+800)
Kyle Larson is winless so far this season. Can that change this Sunday? It’s possible when you consider what he was able to do a year ago at the Roval. Larson led 47 of the 109 laps before he was involved in a major wreck.

With little data to consider for this race, why not go to last year’s lap lead leader at 8-1? Larson has not been great in his career at road courses, and he has just one top-five finish in 13 tries, but he has three poles in his career at road courses. There is a good chance he qualifies well and runs up front all race long. Maybe he can get some better luck this year.

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton heads to the Singapore Grand Prix aiming for his first victory since returning from the summer break.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the previous two races in Belgium and Italy, but Mercedes driver Hamilton is favourite to secure his third victory in a row under the lights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Max Verstappen is also tipped to do well in Singapore and 2019 championship leader Hamilton expects Red Bull to be a challenger this weekend. Last year the Briton beat Verstappen to the chequered flag.

Hamilton said: “When you come here each year, [the balance of performance] shifts between the Ferrari, the Red Bulls and us.

“The Red Bulls have particularly been quick over the years, so we anticipate they’re going to be strong this weekend, and again, I have no idea whether Ferrari will be quick, as they have been in the last two races.

“We’ll just focus on ourselves, trying to make sure we extract the most we can.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen recorded the fastest time in the first free practice (FP1) session in Singapore on Friday.

Verstappen set the pace with a best lap of 1:40.259. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was second fastest while Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was third in the timings.

Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas set the fourth fastest time but crashed out. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was also forced to retire early.

When: 6-8 September
Where: Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Race start time: 2.10pm on Sunday 8 September
TV channels: live on Sky Sports F1 and highlights on Channel 4

Ferrari come into their home race on the back of their first victory of the season last weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Leclerc’s superb drive at Spa was his maiden win in Formula 1 and he is excited to be racing at Monza in front of the Tifosi, Ferrari’s loyal fans.

“Last year, coming to Monza was probably one of the best experiences of my life,” said Leclerc. “The support I had, even though I was not a Ferrari driver, was unbelievable.

“So I can’t imagine now. Obviously, I just won my first race in Formula 1, so I’m pretty sure the welcome will be as great as it was last year but probably even more now, firstly driving for Ferrari and especially because I had my first win in Formula 1. So I’m really looking forward to arriving in Italy.”

Binotto seeks perfection
Mercedes have a 145-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship and Silver Arrows duo Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are No.1 and No.2 in the drivers’ standings.

World champion Hamilton will be aiming for his sixth career win in Italy.

Despite breaking their season duck at Spa last weekend Ferrari know that winning the Italian GP will be a tough challenge.

Team principal Mattia Binotto says the Scuderia must have a perfect weekend at Monza.

“The win in Spa is important for our fans, hopefully many will join us in Monza to support us,” he said. “We’ve seen that to win, we need to do everything perfect, from the quali, to the start, to the team management, to the drivers themselves, so nothing can be left.

“I expect that it will be very difficult in Monza so we will need to be perfect there, knowing that Mercedes may be competitive as well.”

Monza remains on calendar
The Italian Grand Prix will remain at Monza until 2024 at least after a deal was agreed between F1 and the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI).

What: race No.13 on the F1 2019 calendar
When: 30 August to 1 September
Where: Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot, Belgium
Race start time: 2.10pm on Sunday 1 September
TV coverage: live on Sky Sports F1 and highlights on Channel 4
The 2019 Formula 1 season resumes this weekend with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

front of the grid.

Last year at Spa Vettel won the race ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen and Ferrari will be hoping for a similar result on Sunday.

This weekend will also see Alexander Albon make his debut for Red Bull Racing. The 23-year-old was promoted during the summer break with Pierre Gasly demoted back to Toro Rosso.

Wolff: let’s keep on pushing
While Hamilton and Bottas are in the top two positions of the drivers’ standings Mercedes are also flying high at the top of the constructors’ championship.

Silver Arrows chief Toto Wolff has urged his team to keep on pushing in the second half of the season. He said: “We’re leading in both championships, but it doesn’t feel that way.

“In the last few years, we saw teams perform very strongly after summer shutdown, so we now we need to keep pushing.

“In that respect, we’re approaching the start to the second half of 2019 more like the start to a completely new season - once again we need to make sure that we leave no room for error and keep raising the bar.

“We’re very excited for the upcoming months with historic races like Belgium and Italy followed by the Singapore night race and many other fantastic events.

“The next stop takes us to Spa, one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar. Finding the right set-up is tricky because the track has a challenging mix of long straights, a wide range of corner speeds and also considerable elevation changes.

“The weather can also be somewhat unpredictable in the Ardennes which can make the sessions very interesting. We’re looking forward to the fight.

Next weekend marks the 87th running of the world’s most famous 24-hour endurance race. Le Mans is a test of stamina for both the drivers and the cars, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of fans who flock to the French circuit for a long week (the track is actually open for testing from Wednesday) of drinking, camping, partying, live music and thrilling motor sport as cars touch speeds of over 200mph. Each year, the level of hype is matched only by the mighty roar of the highly tuned engines. At 2pm on Saturday, 60 teams will finally line up on the start grid. Will Toyota produce back-to-back wins? Will Porsche add to its record 17 overall victories? All eyes will also be on Ford and its fleet of GTs. The race is Ford’s last effort participating as a factory team and it plans on going out in style with a series of special ‘Celebration Liveries’ for its racing cars. Each of the four factory Fords will have a paint job inspired by the success of the manufacturer at Le Mans, both recently and in the 1960s. Perhaps the brand’s greatest win was in 1966, so particular focus will be on the #66 Ford GT raced by Stefan Mücke, Olivier Pla and Billy Johnson as it will sport the same colour scheme as the GT40 of Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon that won in 1966.

Hour 4:10: Daniel Serra moves past Earl Bamber, putting the #52 AF Corse Ferrari ahead of the #93 Porsche, on track for second in GTE-Am. Both are within about a second of the leading #63 Corvette.

Hour 4:05: We're well into the race now and we can see that Toyota's fastest in-race lap is a 3:17.2, while the fastest lap by a non-Toyota is a 3:19.7 from the SMP Racing #11 BR1 in fourth. The closeness of LMP1 qualifying was, fairly clearly, a mirage. This is more than just Toyota's race to lose; It's their race to not throw away.

Hour 3:51: Finally, the #26 G-Drive car goes into the LMP2 lead.

Eurosport is reporting a nose change for the #8 Toyota, running second, to adjust for a balance issue that was pushing the nose into the ground. The new front bodywork piece is producing less downforce, which they believe will fix the issue but compromise some of the car's balance.

Hour 3:49: The ARC Bratislava LMP2 car, #49, spins at Indianapolis and, somehow, decides the perfect place to do a three point turn is the straight between Indianapolis and Arnage. Somehow, that didn't end in disaster.

Hour 3:28: LMP2's battle for the lead is down to a second on track. Those two briefly swapped positions about twenty minutes ago, but, for the most part, the #36 Signatech Alpine has lead the #26 G-Drive Racing car all race long.

Both are Orecas masquerading as unique cars built by their sponsoring manufacturers.

Hour 3:15: GTE-Pro's top cars are all shuffled as some cars move onto slightly different strategies and others do early driver changes, but Corvette #93 still leads that class. It's AF Corse Ferrari #51 in second, Porsche #93 in third, and two Ford GTs, the #67 being run by the WEC team and the #68 being run by the IMSA team, round out the top five.

3:06: Eurosport's booth analyst segment is back and still includes a three-box cut where they show the confused faces of Kristensen and the host but not the on track racing itself. Said host has changed from a bird shirt to a patternless blue shirt, taking away the only good part of this segment.

Hour 2:58: The DragonSpeed LMP1 car may be in a bad place, but their LMP2 entry has just moved up to third on a pass with a little bit of side-t0-side contact. G-Drive Racing's #26 runs second in that class, still behind the Signatech Alpine, while Jackie Chan DC Racing (a program run by Jota Sport) run fourth and fifth. Those are very much the class's heavy hitters, so do not be surprised if the top five is some combination of those same cars in 21 hours.

Hour 2:42: Third full course yellow of the race, for both a no contact spin and debris from a punctured. It's the #69 Ford GT, one of the IMSA cars and the one wearing an iteration of Gulf blue in honor of the GT40 that won in both 1968 and 1969, doing the spinning this time, while the punctured tire came off an LMP2 car.

Hour 2:36: If you were wondering, the #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche still leads GTE-Am, while the #36 Signatech Alpine Oreca still leads LMP2. Those cars have been the class of the pro-am classes for most of the first two hours of this race, not a major surprise given that those teams are widely considered among the elite in their respective classes.

The #85 Keating Motorsports Ford GT, the first ever to be run by a private team, is now up to second in GTE-Am, about thirty seconds back of the class leader.

Hour 2:28: Rebellion #1 back on track. Only lost a lap with that particular issue, which was not specified on the Eurosport broadcast.

Hour 2:24: Rebellion #1 is in the garage now, but Bruno Senna is still in the car, so the issue may not be major. That's the third private LMP1 car to have an issue in the race, joining the ByKolles car and the Dragon-Speed run BR1.

Hour 2:14: Rebellion #1, the slower of the two, has spun on track, but resumes issue. That car was already well behind the leading LMP1 privateers, which are running third through fifth overall and all between half a lap and a full lap behind the Toyotas.

Hour 2:07: The most interesting thing on track is, as it has been for about an hour now, still the #93 Porsche chasing the #63 Corvette for the GTE-Pro lead. Patrick Pilet, in the Porsche has been within a car length of Jan Magnussen, in the Corvette, two or three times in that span, but still can't seem to put consistent pressure on that car.

Notably, both of those cars are full time IMSA entrants. Those North American cars lead a run of five full time World Endurance Championship entrants, and Ford, Porsche, Corvette, and Ferrari are the only four manufacturers represented in the top ten. The first BMW shows up in 11th, while the first Aston Martin is the pole sitting #95, which has now fallen all the way down to 13th.

Hour 2:00: Mercifully, it appears that Tom Kristensen has only been contracted to attempt to use a touchscreen once every two hours, so the next ten minutes of racing will actually be broadcast in both the U.S. and Europe.

Hour 1:51: The DragonSpeed LMP1 car, #10, is somehow getting penalized for a fuel allowance violation despite having been in the garage undergoing further repairs for its ominously-smoking-out-the-back problem for a few laps now. That is, of course, a short term efficiency penalty, rather than one for total use over the course of the race, though it would be deeply impressive if that car found a way to use 24 hours of fuel in 2.

Hour 1:40: Debris from the #88 Porsche has brought out a second full course yellow. That seems to be a headlight that's finally fallen off the car after the previous issue.

There's also some debris on track from Eddie Cheever III's #70 MR Racing Ferrari, which has just blown a tire. That GTE-AM car is unrelated to the Car Guy Racing Ferrari, despite both having names that sound like the nickname of some guy that likes auto racing.

Watch Pocono 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series online free live streaming 2019 high quality(HD) broadcast on Sunday,June 02 ,2019 at START TIME: 2 p.m. ET. Track: Pocono Raceway (Long Pond, Pa.). The second half of NASCAR's regular season kicks off Sunday in the Pocono mountains with one of the most unique tracks on the circuit. Nicknamed the Tricky Triangle, 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., has a unique style where all three of its turns have different bankings and lengths. The transitions are so different drivers sometimes feel like it's a mini road course.

That could open up an opportunity for someone new to get to Victory Lane, a welcome relief for many competitors in a season that’s been dominated by a select few. Just two race teams have combined for 12 of the season’s 13 victories to date: Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske. The six drivers who have won represent the fewest to this point in the year in NASCAR’s playoff era.

So the second half of the regular season becomes a proving ground to discover who, if anyone, can stand up to these powerhouses. Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and 2018 champion Joey Logano appear to be a powerful quartet from the Penske-Gibbs group that rank 1-2-3-5 in laps led. Combined, they-ve won 10 races and pulled off 24 top-5 finishes, edging JGR Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin as Championship 4 favorites. But these veterans, all former Cup titlists know far too well the danger of peaking too early. This time last year, Logano was an afterthought and he wound up charging through the postseason to beat the "Big Three" of Busch, Truex and Kevin Harvick who dominated the first half of 2018.

So who are the big names that can break through in the season's second half? We’ll start with the obvious. Chase Elliott has won once already but he's leading a Chevrolet charge as Hendrick Motorsports claws back after a sluggish start. Kurt Busch has 11 top-15 finishes in 13 races with a Chip Ganassi Racing team where he's likely fighting for his future career. Harvick, despite sitting fourth in points, sits winless with the worst start of his six-year tenure at Stewart-Haas Racing. That's almost certain to change.

Next, there are the dark horse candidates. A sport looking to transition to younger talent may come from some twentysomethings on the brink. Ryan Blaney has had the worst luck imaginable, mechanical failures and awkward mistakes keeping him from joining his two Penske teammates in Victory Lane. This weekend, the site of his first career win in 2017, offers an opportunity at redemption. Alex Bowman, after a choppy first season-plus replacing Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulled off three second-place finishes over the past month and Victory Lane seems inevitable.

Then there's Erik Jones, the lone winless Joe Gibbs Racing driver whose contract extension remains a central topic of conversation. There's no better way to keep NASCAR Xfinity Series star Christopher Bell from jumping in your seat then by ripping off several wins in a row during the summer months.

But the biggest intrigue may come with two of the sport's most well-known names. Jimmie Johnson stated at Charlotte "he doesn't know what he's going to do in 2021 yet" as the seven-time champ is wrestling with a winless streak that's over two years old. Currently sitting on the playoff bubble, the success or failure of his summer could determine whether 2020 turns into a formal retirement tour. On the flip side of the Chevrolet garage, Kyle Larson has gone from a man many thought could be a yearly title contender to a Logano pre-Penske burnout candidate to switch rides. His next 13 races with Chip Ganassi and a potential postseason miss may start the dominoes on driver Silly Season heading to 2020.

Through it all, NASCAR is dealing with a pending merger of track arm International Speedway Corporation and rumors of a potential sale altogether. But a baby rollout of some Gen-7 pieces (the next-generation car debuting in 2021) at the All-Star Race last month received positive reviews. Television ratings are up for roughly half the races this season, a sign bleeding track attendance and viewership have started to stabilize. And a much-maligned handling package seems to have found its footing in night racing at Kansas and Charlotte.

It all adds up to drama and intrigue that could make the summer stretch one of its best in years, beginning with this weekend up in the Pennsylvania countryside. For a sport that’s suffered so much in recent years, that’s welcome news.

Pocono 400

Time: 2 p.m. ET (Sunday)

Track: Pocono Raceway (Long Pond, Pa.)

Who's at the Front: Martin Truex Jr.
Truex has come into his own with the JGR No. 19 Toyota, winning three of the past five points-paying Cup races and leading 100-plus laps in each. While teammate Kyle Busch has stolen the spotlight, Truex’s runs to the front have arguably been more impressive.

There was Richmond, a place where Truex snapped an 0-for-80 career drought on Cup Series short tracks. At Dover, he charged from the back after failing pre-race inspection to win an event where passing was near impossible. Then, during the Coca-Cola 600, he recovered after a blown tire left him slamming into the outside wall on lap 75. He was back out front within 60 laps and wound up leading 116 en route to his second victory in NASCAR’s longest race the past four years.

Middle Tier

Alex Bowman is red hot and there's no reason to expect a race at Pocono will slow him down. An awful track record here (no top-20 finishes his first five starts) was corrected with a strong third-place result last July. Bowman still has yet to lead a lap here but recent history tells us that should change this weekend; he’s led 94 in the last month alone. Expect him to run up front early and often Sunday.

It's feast or famine for Kyle Larson lately which could make him a little cheaper heading into Sunday's race. Beware of the risks but also know he had a second in the Pocono race here last June. Five top-10 finishes in 10 career starts isn't a bad track record for a guy whose skill set translates well to this unique challenge on the NASCAR circuit.

Lower Tier

Chris Buescher. Chris Buescher. Chris Buescher. We can't say enough good things about the JTG Daugherty Racing driver who's pulled off back-to-back top-10 finishes in the Cup Series. His lone career Cup win came at Pocono with a different team in 2016 (Front Row Motorsports) and his history at the track is ho-hum other than that. But don't discount the power of momentum that' left this underdog driver just 55 points outside of a postseason bid at the season's halfway point.

Speaking of Front Row Motorsports, David Ragan put together two top-20 finishes at Pocono with the No. 38 team last year. Ragan was on the front row for Charlotte’s final restart last weekend and hung on for a 15th-place finish, overachieving for this smaller program.

What Vegas Thinks
Kyle Busch leads the pack, as he typically does with 5/2 odds this week. Kevin Harvick is second with 9/2 and Martin Truex Jr. is at 6/1. Former Pocono winner Chris Buescher might be a good dark horse candidate; he’s sitting at 100/1.

March Madness, typically reserved for the NCAA Tournament, was supposed to trickle down to NASCAR last weekend. Martinsville Speedway’s short track is typically an automatic for the most exciting action you'll see all year; just last fall, Joey Logano pulled the bump-and-run on Martin Truex Jr. in a championship-defining moment. But heading to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, stock car madness has nothing to do with actual racing. Instead, it's the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series off-track buzz that's got fans and garage insiders paying attention.

Distractions will happen when Brad Keselowski pulled a fast one on the field, leading 446 of 500 laps Sunday to produce the fewest Martinsville lead changes since 1967 (three). A rare case of short track monotony, however, got buried by 48 hours of major NASCAR news. The week has since been dominated by new qualifying rules combined with a 2020 schedule shakeup designed to address fan and driver concerns of stagnation.

Suddenly, next year's postseason has a brand-new look. Bristol's iconic night race is now part of the playoff schedule along with Darlington Raceway's Southern 500. The championship finale has been moved nearly 3,000 miles, from Homestead-Miami Speedway to Phoenix. The sport's regular season is now bookended by Daytona International Speedway. And Pocono Raceway now will have an experimental NASCAR doubleheader, condensing their two race weekends into one. (I offer a full breakdown of the changes here).

In the meantime, the sport aggressively addressed a qualifying fiasco from Auto Club Speedway. New rules were designed to force cars off pit road and prevent cars from failing to turn a hot lap on track. The old system failed miserably in California two weeks ago; nobody went out for the final round in time, causing Austin Dillon to win the pole by default based on his second round effort. (His official speed was 0.000 mph).

To their credit, NASCAR is showing consistently this season they're willing to address issues head on. Qualifying and schedule concerns have been at or near the top of the list for fans, drivers and teams. Top officials, led by NASCAR President Steve Phelps on down have attempted to come up with solutions instead of hiding down a rabbit hole.

But this past week was also a tough lesson: simply coming up with a solution doesn’t mean you've hit a home run. Controversy reigned supreme in Friday's Texas qualifying; Clint Bowyer went off after feeling like Ryan Newman blocked his effort on pit lane. (Bowyer wound up 25th on the grid).

"It's sad. Those people up there paid a lot of money to watch a qualifying session... people go out and try and do their best. But your best is only good enough if the guy in front of you does a good job," Bowyer said. "It's not qualifying. Whatever. Learn from your mistakes. We've got to figure something else out. It doesn't work. You just can't keep trying it. Wait until a wreck happens on pit road."

Bowyer wouldn't outwardly say "single-car qualifying" as a solution; NASCAR aggressively poo-poohed the idea as a fix earlier this week. But it might be the only solution they have to solve an awkward drafting situation under this new package. Speeds are artificially inflated as a result while pit road maneuvering to be the right guy in line remains out of control.

And that brings us to the elephant in the room: the sport's new handling package. Heading into Texas this weekend, the racing has been underwhelming and passing difficult at virtually every type of track. A boost in TV ratings has been balanced by mounting criticism over horsepower issues, handling issues and the continued advantage of clean air up front.

A 2020 schedule shakeup certainly drums up interest in the meantime. But switching up the tracks if the racing stays bad only puts lipstick on a pig. The main question two months into the season remains unanswered. NASCAR, for all its solutions, has put together a clunker of a 2019 package. Will they actually stop and fix it in season so the competition starts improving before the Gen-7 rollout in 2021?

If not, all the schedule sizzle and qualifying tweaks will mean little to the long-term health of the sport. You don't travel to a venue, no matter how exciting if what you’re going to see there won’t keep you entertained.

The off-track buzz is nice, for sure. But the on-track product is where NASCAR needs to focus next. It's great they’re willing to work on solutions but they're quickly learning the first throw of the dart doesn't hit the bullseye. There's years of innovation and creativity to catch up on.

Hopefully, as the season progresses, practice will make perfect. Further revisions by dedicated leadership are needed to get the sport back in mint condition.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 500

Time: 3 p.m. ET (Sunday)

Track: Texas Motor Speedway (Fort Worth, Texas)

TV: FOX

Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Team Penske
Keselowski's dominant Martinsville performance was the latest in a string of Penske victories. He and teammate Logano have won three of six Cup races to date; teammate Ryan Blaney has also flashed speed, leading 150 laps.

Stewart-Haas Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing (Kyle Busch in particular) are running neck-and-neck with the Penske group. But this three-car outfit is the most consistent within its ranks from top to bottom.

Who's at the Back: Erik Jones
The third year has not been the charm for this Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver. His trio of teammates have won two of the last four championships, two of the last three Daytona 500s and already sit in strong playoff position. Jones? He’s gone four straight races without a top-10 finish, including an awkward Martinsville flat tire where Jones had to limp to the pits under green.

That 30th-place result leaves Jones on the postseason bubble early in 2019. And it also leaves him potentially vulnerable long-term with Christopher Bell anxiously awaiting a 2020 promotion to Cup from Toyota.

News Briefs

The 2020 schedule announcement is still being digested by fans. Besides the changes mentioned above, prominent racetracks like Indianapolis Motor Speedway are switching dates. The sport hopes a move to July 4th weekend reinvigorates what used to be a crown jewel race on the schedule. Other tracks with regular season switches include Atlanta Motor Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, whose lone Cup date moves from the playoffs to March. ISM Raceway in Phoenix now serves as the championship finale for 2020 and beyond.

NASCAR's new qualifying rules are focused on getting the cars on the racetrack. Any car in group qualifying who intentionally blocks pit road to prevent another car from leaving can now have their time disallowed. And any driver who does not take time in any round will automatically start the race from the rear.

Greg Biffle is making a return to NASCAR competition. The 49-year-old former full-time racer in the Cup, Xfinity and Truck series will drive Kyle Busch's No. 51 Toyota at Texas Motor Speedway in June. Biffle, who hasn’t run in NASCAR since the 2016 Homestead Cup finale, practiced in the truck on Thursday to get his feet wet and prepare for the start.

Leavine Family Racing is looking to expand to a two-car NASCAR operation by 2020. The team, which switched to Toyota this season after hiring Matt DiBenedetto, is one of just five full-time Camrys on the Cup circuit. Owner Leavine also revealed in an interview with SportsMap.com he had a deal with Daniel Suarez last season that ultimately fell through. Suarez wound up signing with Stewart-Haas Racing.

NASCAR by the Numbers

6th

Kyle Busch's worst finish in any of NASCAR's top three series this year. Busch is the only driver with top-10 finishes in every Cup race this season.

538

Laps led by Brad Keselowski so far this season. He led 705 laps in all 36 races back in 2017.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

It’s hard to bet against Fall winner Kevin Harvick here in the Lone Star State. Harvick has run first, second and first in his last three TMS starts while qualifying no worse than third during that stretch. Sure, he starts a distant 23rd this weekend but that’s all the more reason to pick him up in daily fantasy. Can you say bonus points?

Martin Truex Jr., like Harvick, is winless in 2019 and due for a trip to Victory Lane. His new Joe Gibbs Racing team has been consistent, just a shade below winning speed but Texas offers a prime opportunity. He’s earned top-10 finishes in seven of his last eight starts at this 1.5-mile oval and is still seeking his first career win here.

Middle Tier

Jimmie Johnson starts from the pole, limiting his ability for max points. It's also hard to see him winning after a Victory Lane drought that’s reached nearly two years. But Johnson does have seven career wins at TMS, more than any NASCAR driver and once won five of seven starts at the track. So if there's any magic in race trim, and Johnson can keep the No. 48 Chevrolet in clean air... you never know?

If there's a place where the struggling Erik Jones can get back on track, it's TMS.  He earned two top-5 finishes there last year (fourth twice) and led 64 laps last spring after earning the pole. His average finish of 10.4 in five career starts is promising in terms of consistency.

Lower Tier

At some point, Daniel Hemric has to put together a full race, right? The rookie qualified seventh at Texas and had top-5 speed at Atlanta earlier this season before tire problems derailed his effort. The rookie has been hampered by tough luck since moving to Cup but has solid history at Texas; he was third in the Xfinity Series spring race here last year.

Bubba Wallace is emerging from a season-opening slump that saw his No. 43 mired in midpack or worse every weekend. A 17th at Martinsville was his best run of the season and now, Wallace heads to a Texas track where he finished eighth last spring. A similar run is possible Sunday under the right circumstances.

What Vegas Thinks
Kyle Busch remains the favorite after a strong start to 2019. He’s got 23/10 odds to win Sunday’s race, followed by Brad Keselowski at 13/4.
