Pearce Dietrich gives his picks and ranks his top drivers for Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 at Darlington slate, which locks at 12:30 p.m. ET on DraftKings.

1. Denny Hamlin ($16,000) - In 12 Darlington races, Hamlin has six wins and three 2nd place finishes. Last year, he won after starting dead last. He might be in play at $20,000.

2. Noah Gragson ($8,800) - Under the first set of bizarre Covid rules, starting position was determined by random draws. Gragson won a lot of these random draws and was able to pad his stats in clean air. Now that he’s not winning random draws, he no longer has the unfair advantage of clean air and he looks pretty mediocre.

3. Austin Cindric ($10,700) - It wasn’t until July that Cindric put it all together, but he was decent in the first Darlington race. Who knows, if Cindric had clean air like Briscoe, maybe he could have won? Cindric will start in the second row in the preferred groove. This gives him the best chance at passing Haley before Hamlin runs them all down.

4. Chase Briscoe ($10,000) - Take nothing away from his emotional win at Darlington, but DFS players are trying to win money. This is not happy story time. Feelings take a backseat to facts and stats. On the first run of the Darlington race, Briscoe drove from 11th to 7th. Kyle Busch drove from 26th to 5th. Briscoe was the only leader to get passed, and he got the lead at the end of the race on pit road. He’s still a top play, but it has less to do with skill and car speed, and more to do with his legendary pit crew.

5. Justin Allgaier ($10,400) - Passing the leader in modern stock car racing is nearly impossible. It’s only happened a couple times this year, and one of those passes was Allgaier getting around Briscoe during stage 3 at Darlington. Allgaier then lost the lead on pit road to Briscoe, and was forced to restart on the bottom and that was game over.

6. David Starr ($4,600) - The No. 07 Bobby Dotter car has been a popular DFS value play this season. Starr’s average finish in this car is 21st. That will work at this price. Anything more, which is likely, is extra. DFS players need savings to fit Hamlin. Starr provides the savings and points.

7. Justin Haley ($9,000) - It’s hard to pass at Darlington, but Haley is not hard to pass. Briscoe will be trapped on the bottom when the green flag drops, and this will allow Haley to earn about 5 hog points before Briscoe or Cindric pass him. His negative place differential will negate all of his hog points.

8. Ross Chastain ($8,600) - Nothing has changed. Chastain has a ton of talent, but he’s too aggressive and his car cannot compete with the top-tier teams. Every week Chastain further proves exactly who he is. At Dover, he could not advance further than 2nd place. At Daytona, he wrecked his teammate for a 6th-place finish. The big teams learned from the Stenhouse debacle, and that’s why Chastain cannot get a top-tier ride.

9. Harrison Burton ($9,700) - It’s not surprising that Burton struggled in the first race back from Covid. This was the first race without practice, and as we have seen, the rookie class has been mediocre without practice. Burton will have notes from the first race, but rookies need on track reps the weekend of a race.

10. Joe Graf, Jr. ($6,700) - Overall, this season has been a success for Graf. Last year, he left the impression that he might be one of the worst pay-to-play drivers ever. Now, he’s just a bad pay-to-play driver. His last top-20 was at Kentucky and half of the field wrecked out. His string of 5 top-20 finishes in six races from Darlington to Homestead seems like a distant memory.

11. Brett Moffitt ($8,700) - When Moffit doesn’t wreck, he averages a 12th-place finish. That more than a respectable accomplishment for a small team in their first season competing in the Xfinity series. However, the obvious place differential points come with a hefty price tag.

12. Anthony Alfredo ($9,400) - The part-time RCR driver and iRacing enthusiast has been good this season, but not $9,400 good. His best finish this season was 4th at Homestead and that was aided by a late race caution. Alfredo’s ceiling is closer to 6th, and that’s not even five times at his price.

13. Austin Hill ($6,900) - When Austin Hill jumps into the No. 61 Hattori car, it’s no longer a Carl Long car. The whole Hattori crew from the tire changers to the engineers will be in the Xfinity garage. Hill earned a top-20 with this car at Fontana, but wrecked at Charlotte.

14. Riley Herbst ($7,900) - One Darlington race is not enough, and no practice time is definitely not enough. Herbst should improve slightly, but Darlinton is a challenging track in a low downforce car. Although he has steadily improved this season, it’s completely acceptable that he might take a step backwards this weekend.

15. Brandon Brown ($7,000) - Throw out his three bad days. In the other 10 races, Brown’s average driver rating rank is 14th. A driver that moves from 17th to 14th is not that appealing, but it is a decent amount of savings and not many drivers on the board can move forward into the top 15.

16. Brandon Jones ($8,200) - In order for Jones to move through the top 10, he’ll need some good cars to wreck. Based on the lack of talent and respect in this series, this is not an unlikely scenario. Jones is cheap. DFS players just need Xfinity drivers to do Xfinity driver things.

17. Jesse Little ($5,400) - This is terrifying, but rostering a top-tier Xfinity driver and Hamlin eats up half of the salary. In the five races before Daytona, Little’s average finish was 10th. A top-15 finish, even with the negative place differential should be fine given the salary constraints this weekend.

18. Josh Williams ($5,200) - If Jesse Little doesn’t work, then the pivot might be Williams. It’s practically the same play. A top-15 is very possible and the savings are necessary. DFS players need two things to happen: Williams has a normal day and another punt does not have an abnormally good day.

19. Tommy Joe Martins ($4,900) - It appears that curse has been lifted. Martins has finished 21st or better in the last seven races. Over that span, his average finish is 16th. Martins will never be chalk again; he destroyed too many lineups this season, but he looks like a very good play this week.

20. Daniel Hemric ($9,200) - This might be the last that we see of Daniel Hemric. The Covid schedule has not helped, but the reality is that Hemric has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself. This is his sixth season in NASCAR and he’s never won at any level, and he’s never going to win at any level.

The Mystics and Sky are meeting for the second time in the Bubble. In their first matchup on the season back in August, the Sky won in a close 88-96 game. Ariel Atkins and Aerial Powers led the charge with 24 and 20 points respectively. Chicago had 5 players score in double-digits and were able to outscore Washington in three quarters.

This matchup will be a bit different as the Mystics are without Powers due to season-ending hamstring injury and without Essence Carson and Shey Peddy due to roster changes. They had added Alecia Sutton and Jacki Gemelos since their last matchup. Chicago will be without Diamond DeShields because she is not currently in the Bubble. It is unclear when and if she will be back for the game or even the season. Prior to her departure DeShields was having the worst season of her career, averaging 6.8 points. Last season, she averaged 16.2 points per game.

The Mystics have lost their last five games while the Sky, who is currently ranked fifth in regular season standings, dropped their last two games. The Mystics put up a good fight in their last game against Seattle so Chicago shouldn’t expect to win without a fight.

With the Indianapolis 500 now in the books for another year, it's time to put the spotlight back on the chase for season championships.

NASCAR is center stage in that regard this week with the final week of the Cup Series set for Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. Drivers and crew chiefs (and the graphics folks at NBC TV) will have plenty of numbers and scenarios to share before and during the Coke Zero Sugar 400. Of course, the drivers currently outside the 16-driver playoff window can get in with a win.

It will make for a fun Saturday night, for sure.

IndyCar is back with a doubleheader at the World Wide Technology Raceway (formerly Gateway), and F1 kicks off its latest triple-header with a race at historic Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

Matt DiBenedetto will be trying to hold on to one of the final NASCAR Cup Series playoff spots this weekend at Daytona International Speedway.

Where: Cup and Xfinity at Daytona Beach, Fla., Trucks at Madison, Ill.

Why it is a Must-See: The last race of NASCAR's regular season will determine the 16-driver field for the playoffs. William Byron leads Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson by four points for that final playoff spot. Matt DiBenedetto is five points up on Byron. Johnson will be throwing everything he's got at this one in what is his final season in the Cup Series.

What to Watch:

• Split screens will be popular on race day, as there's a good chance the top two finishers between DiBenedetto, Byron and Johnson will punch their tickets to the playoffs.

• Denny Hamlin, who has six wins this season, won the Daytona 500 in February. He'll be trying to become the first driver to sweep the two races on the big oval at Daytona International Speedway since Johnson won both the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 in 2013.

• Justin Haley is giving the big boys a break this week. The Xfinity Series regular, who has started just four Cup Series races in his career, won last year's rain-shortened Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. This year, he's racing in the Xfinity race on Friday night. Haley is currently seventh in the Xfinity Series playoff standings.

Why it is a Must-See: This week, Formula 1 and the FIA announced what they hope will be the final, final, final updated 2020 race calendar. That means, hopefully, the goal post is now in place—11 races to go. Lewis Hamilton has a healthy 37-point lead over Max Verstappen in the driver standings. Verstappen doesn't want to see that gap get much wider.

What to Watch:

• Don't sleep in on Saturday, as qualifying at Spa means something. Since a 2007 track reconfiguration at Spa, the winner has come from the front row in all but two years. The only drivers to buck that trend were Kimi Raikkonen, who won from the sixth qualifying spot in in 2009, and Daniel Ricciardo, who won from the fifth position in 2014.

• Surprisingly, Spa has not been a winning track for Mercedes in recent years. The team's last win there was in 2017 with Hamilton, who finished runner-up to Ferrari drivers each of the last two years. Charles Leclerc won there last year, Sebastian Vettel in 2018.

• Spa-Francorchamps is F1's longest track with a lap distance of 7.004 kilometers (4.3 miles). This tops the second circuit on the list, Baku (3.7 miles). Because of its long lap distance, the Belgian Grand Prix has the lowest number of race laps in F1 with 44, making for a race distance of 191 miles.

Where: Madison, Ill.

Why it is a Must-See: IndyCar tries to keep the momentum going from Takuma Sato's victory in the 104th Indianapolis 500. And the series will be doing just that with a doubleheader—the first for IndyCar at that track.

What to Watch:

• History says one racer who likely won't win this week is Indy 500 winner Sato. The last winner of the 500 to come back and win the next race was Arie Luyendyk way back in 1997. That year, Luyendyk won Indy and then won the next race at Texas Motor Speedway. Tony Stewart—yes, THAT Tony Stewart—broke Luyendyk's winning streak three weeks later. However, Sato did win at World Wide Technology Raceway last year.

• Scott Dixon left Indianapolis shaking his head and wondering what might have been had the the 500 not ended under caution. Still, the Ganassi Racing veteran has a healthy 84-point lead in the championship standings over runner-up Josef Newgarden. Dixon, with five championships, is just two titles shy of A.J. Foyt in American open-wheel racing.

• The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 will be the fifth and sixth oval races of the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series schedule. The previous oval races were won by Dixon (Texas Motor Speedway), Simon Pagenaud (Iowa Speedway Race 1), Newgarden (Iowa Speedway Race 2) and Sato (Indianapolis Motor Speedway).

• Watch out for the rookies, as three of them—Oliver Askew, Alex Palou and Rinus VeeKay—are expected to compete. All three rookies, plus Pato O’Ward and Jack Harvey, will make their first NTT IndyCar Series start at World Wide Technology Raceway. O'Ward is currently third in the season points standings.

Both Mercedes drivers and Verstappen will start the race on the medium tyres as they were able to get through Q2 on what is a better race tyre than the red-walled softs the rest of the top 10 will start on if the track is dry.

Ferrari managed to avoid losing a driver in Q1, but Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel were both eliminated in the next segment, one year on from the former taking pole at Spa.

When it came to Q3, Hamilton led the way after the opening runs with a 1m41.451s - a new track record - while Bottas had time to make up after locking up and running wide on the large kerb at the exit of La Source.

But, while Bottas was able to improve early on the final runs on the soft tyres in Q3, Hamilton went even faster - setting personal best times in the first and third sector, and going fastest of anyone in the middle part of the track, where Mercedes has been dominant all weekend.

The world champion's last lap looked in control all the way around as he blasted to a 1m41.252s to improve the best time.

Running behind, Bottas lost time all around his final lap and wound up 0.511 seconds adrift.

Verstappen was left frustrated to finish just 0.015s behind Bottas, complaining that he ran out of battery energy at the end of his final lap.

Daniel Ricciardo will start fourth after Verstappen's last-gasp lap pushed him down one spot, with the Renault driver abandoning his final effort.

Alex Albon put the second Red Bull fifth ahead of Esteban Ocon, who found enough time with the session's final flying lap to deny Carlos Sainz Jr P6 for McLaren.

Racing Point drivers Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll took eighth and ninth after only completing one run in Q3, while Lando Norris rounded out the top 10 after setting a personal best on his last run but not finding enough time to move up the order.

Personal best times were not enough to save Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly from elimination in Q2, as the Racing Point drivers gained significantly from their first attempts to get through the middle segment on the medium tyres.

Stroll and Perez jumping up the order from P11 and P12 after the first runs ultimately did for the AlphaTauris despite their own improvements, which meant they ended up in the positions just outside the top 10.

Both Ferraris were ultimately knocked out in Q2 for the first time in 2020, with Leclerc heading Vettel in P13.

George Russell again got his Williams into Q2, but abandoned his first run, with his second good enough only for P15 after the Ferraris found time on their second efforts.

In Q1, Vettel was under pressure to improve having sat 19th after the first runs had been completed, but the danger of both works Ferraris being knocked out in the opening segment remained.

A battling warm-up lap for the drivers still needing to improve left both Vettel and Leclerc having to run without a tow at the head of a pack of cars.

But they still managed to gain enough time to get through to Q2, with Vettel jumping up six spots, although Leclerc had a nervous wait as he was shuffled down to P15, complaining later about the lack of a tow.

The top four drivers knocked out in Q1 all set personal bests, but Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Antonio Giovinazzi and Nicholas Latifi could not match the delighted and surprised Russell in splitting the Ferraris.

They will start P15-P19, with Kevin Magnussen last in the second Haas after his final run was ruined by a long trip through the Stavelot gravel trap, where he nearly ran into the wall to his left as he struggled to slow his Haas machine.

This has been a year in sports unlike any other. But Saturday night, NASCAR will hold its regular-season finale, on schedule, at Daytona International Speedway. The Coke Zero Sugar 400, moved this year from its traditional July 4th weekend, will still provide fireworks as the remainder of the sport's 16-driver field will be determined by the parity and unpredictability of a superspeedway draft.

 

NASCAR should be commended for fighting through a number of obstacles, from the COVID-19 quarantine to unprecedented weather issues, to get to this point. Two Cup drivers, Austin Dillon and Jimmie Johnson, have tested positive for the virus but neither wound up seriously ill. The sport remains on pace to finish its season without reducing the number of total events on its schedule.

 

That said, let's set the stage for who's in and who's out of the postseason chase. 13 drivers have already locked down a spot no matter what happens Saturday night at Daytona.

 

Race winners (10): Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Cole Custer, Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr.

 

Qualified on points (3): Aric Almirola, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch

 

Clint Bowyer needs just three points on Saturday to become the 14th driver in this field. The scenarios are so far-fetched where he would miss the postseason we won't get into them here. (The likelihood is, he'll clinch by the end of stage one Saturday night.)

 

That leaves Matt DiBenedetto, William Byron and Johnson as three drivers fighting for the final two spots on points. DiBenedetto enters nine points ahead of Johnson in 17th and five ahead of Byron. Johnson is four behind Byron for the final spot. Erik Jones has a slight chance to sneak in on points but only if the three drivers above wreck early (he's 50 behind Byron).

 

It all seems pretty cut and dry, right? A compelling trio of storylines for the final two spots? DiBenedetto's future in the sport may be on the line, as is the Byron-Chad Knaus driver/crew chief relationship and Johnson's bid for a record-breaking eighth Cup championship. That, in itself, would be enough to bring fans to the edge of their seats.

 

But Daytona is unique in the parity it brings to the sport. Virtually any one of the 40 drivers in the field could win with the right drafting skill and technique. Differences in equipment are minimal and it gives teams a chance to rescue a disastrous season.

 

Add in NASCAR's playoff rules? Where a win means you can make the postseason as long as you're in the top 30 in points? That equals chaos about to reign at Daytona.

 

Jones, Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Michael McDowell, Ryan Newman, John Hunter Nemechek, Ty Dillon, Matt Kenseth, Corey LaJoie, Ryan Preece and Daniel Suarez have all had years to forget. Yet if any of them win on Saturday night? They'll be punching a postseason ticket. Just like that.

 

Their victory would take one spot away from the Matty D-Byron-Johnson playoff battle and leave just one of them in the 16-driver field. It'll lead to a pile of nerves and no one in this position feeling safe during the 160-lap race.

 

"It's probably gonna be a game of survival when it comes down to the very end," DiBenedetto said this week. "Especially as desperate as a lot of people will be."

 

As NASCAR Hall of Fame announcer Ken Squier might say, "A sad moment for these people" based on the two-plus hours of stress they'll endure. But for race fans? It'll be must-watched television, from beginning to end, in one of the year's most exciting events.

Who's at the Front: Martin Truex Jr.

Other title contenders, like Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin, continue to pile up the victories heading into this year's Championship 4. Truex, though is on a little streak of his own that keeps him in the midst of title contention. Over the past seven races, he has finished no lower than third, leading 142 laps along the way. There have been no victories during that stretch but he's risen in points just the same, up to fourth heading into the regular-season finale.

 

Can Truex finally break through with a victory at a track that's long eluded him... Daytona?

 

Who's at the Back: Erik Jones

On Aug. 6, Joe Gibbs Racing announced Jones would not be back in their No. 20 Toyota next season. They might as well have thrown a potential playoff bid in the toilet along with that long-term contract. Jones is 0-for-5 on top-10 finishes in the five races since, running no better than 11th while watching other bubble drivers like the Johnson/Byron combo pile up the points and pull away.

Think teammates will work together Saturday night at Daytona? Think again. Friday night’s Xfinity Series race was settled when two Kaulig Racing teammates tangled during the final lap of the race. Ross Chastain tapped leader AJ Allmendinger entering turn 3, spinning them out and allowing Justin Haley (a Kaulig driver himself) to sneak by for the win.

 

Noah Gragson will return to JR Motorsports in 2021. Gragson, who had been rumored for a full-time promotion into the Cup Series, will remain in Xfinity instead. He’ll continue developing with the same No. 9 team where he’s won two races this year.

 

Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Greg Biffle is moonlighting in the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Biffle is returning to the sport at Darlington Raceway next weekend, driving a truck for GMS Racing. The 49-year-old won the last truck race he entered, surging to the front to win last June at Texas Motor Speedway.

Yes, Denny Hamlin has won the last two Daytona 500s. But Fords have been at the forefront of pack racing this year. Ryan Blaney won this summer's thriller at Talladega Superspeedway, an event that might be one of the best pack races we've seen this century. It's the second Cup race in the last three won by the Blue Oval brand, and they might have made it three-for-three without unfortunate last-lap contact in this year's NASCAR Super Bowl (see Newman below).

 

I don't know if I'd go with Hamlin and Blaney; the law of averages at these events mean the "Big One" is ready to sweep them into a wreck. But how about Brad Keselowski? Keselowski has crashed out in six of the last seven Daytona events. He's due. And Joey Logano? He sat on the pole for this race last summer and has led 57 laps in the last three Daytona events.

Middle Tier

 

The last time we saw Ryan Newman at Daytona, the No. 6 car was upside down in a near-tragic ending to February's Great American Race. It's also the only top-10 finish Newman has recorded during a difficult year. Isn't this race the type of redemption story for him we see in sports all the time? Expect the Roush Fenway Racing driver to run up front.

 

Aric Almirola charged to the front this summer on the back of nine straight top-10 finishes. His pack racing prowess (two wins at Daytona and Talladega) make him a solid pick in a sea of drivers that might be more popular selections. Two DNFs in the last four Daytona races mean the 2014 Coke Zero 400 winner is due for a bit of good luck here.

 

Lower Tier

 

Here's where you make your money at Daytona and cash in with daily fantasy formats. I'm going to go with two little-known teams that typically have big results here.

 

Corey LaJoie has just a single top-10 finish this season and that came in the Daytona 500. He's got back-to-back top 10s with Go FAS Racing and is ride hunting for 2021; a good result here would work wonders for his future.

 

Another team further down the list is rookie John Hunter Nemechek. Nemechek was 11th in his lone Daytona Cup start but drives for a Front Row Motorsports team with a history of solid performances. Michael McDowell will be the more popular play (three straight top-15 finishes here) which leaves Nemechek ripe for the picking.

 

What Vegas Thinks

Denny Hamlin leads the way with 13/2 odds to win the race, followed by Kevin Harvick at 10/1. Team Penske's Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano sit at 12/1.

 

If there's ever a race to pick a longshot, this one is it. Matt DiBenedetto at 28/1 is a pretty good bet.

As if competing on the furiously fast, high-banks of Daytona International Speedway wasn’t exciting enough. The NASCAR Cup Series will be deciding its final slate of 16 Playoff drivers there in Saturday night’s regular season finale, the Coke Zero Sugar 400 (7:30 p.m. ET on NBC, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, formally secured the NASCAR Cup Series regular season championship last weekend at Dover International Speedway and 13 of the 16 Playoff positions are essentially locked in. Ten drivers have earned berths because of race victories – Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon and rookie Cole Custer.

Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch have earned enough points to secure their Playoff seats as well. That leaves three positions at stake in Saturday night’s race. Clint Bowyer is ranked 14th (+57 above the cutoff) and Matt DiBenedetto is ranked 15th in the points with a nine-point edge over 17th place Jimmie Johnson. Bowyer can clinch one of the three remaining spots in the Playoffs by scoring just three points this weekend.

William Byron, in 16th, holds only a four-point advantage in the final Playoff transfer position over his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who is retiring from fulltime competition at the end of the season. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Erik Jones is 50 points behind Byron. He earned his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory at Daytona in the 2018 summer 400-miler.

Beyond these drivers racing for their Playoff lives, Daytona always presents a unique opportunity. It’s famous style of high-speed, tightly-packed superspeedway racing could even mean a new winner not currently seen on the Playoff bubble.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who is ranked 23rd, won at Daytona in the summer of 2017. Bubba Wallace is ranked 22nd in the championship standings, but the Richard Petty Motorsports driver finished runner-up in his very first NASCAR Cup Series start at the track, the 2018 Daytona 500.

NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Justin Haley, is the defending winner of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, taking his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in the rain-shortened Daytona race. Denny Hamlin won his third Daytona 500 in February but has never won the summer race.

There is a lot on the line in Saturday night’s race. And a long list of potential winners.

“I don’t’ know if it’s excitement, or anxious or what the emotion is, it’s definitely different going to Daytona with so much on the line," said DiBenedetto, driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford.

DiBenedetto’s single-car Wood Brothers Racing Ford is part of the Team Penske alliance – meaning that he can count on Penske drivers Keselowski, Logano and Blaney as teammates. But even so, DiBenedetto conceded, “you can only plan so much” when competing on the unpredictable Daytona high banks.

“You can try to not put yourself in bad positions. It’s very tough to plan things at Daytona but I know we’ll work together very well."

“Our attention is really focused on those guys we’re racing for a Playoff spot and also knowing there could be a surprise winner in there too," DiBenedetto added. “Someone could jump into the Playoffs that’s outside of it now. Daytona as you know, is known for situations like that. There’s going to be a lot of variables."

Among the threesome most closely contending for the three Playoff positions – DiBenedetto, Byron and Johnson – Johnson is the only former NASCAR Cup Series winner at Daytona. The soon-to-be NASCAR Hall of Famer won the pole position for the Daytona 500 in his very first series race at the track in 2002. He won his first Daytona 500 in 2006 and turned in a rare Daytona sweep in 2013 winning both the Daytona 500 and summer 400-miler.

DiBenedetto has three top-10 finishes in 10 starts, including a career-best Daytona showing (seventh) in the 2018 July race and an eighth place in last year’s 400-miler. The 22-year old Byron won the pole for the 2019 Daytona 500, but his only top-20 finish is a runner-up in the 2019 summer race. He has three DNFs in five Daytona NASCAR Cup Series starts.

Byron does have a win at Daytona - the 2017 July NASCAR Xfinity Series race. And the crew chief of his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet is Chad Knaus, the same crew chief who led Johnson to seven series championships and that 2013 Daytona sweep.

“Daytona is an accept-it-as-it-happens kind of place, which makes it a challenge," Byron said. “You have to go in expecting that things aren’t going to go your way, and hopefully they do.

“It’s one of those things that you have to go in with low expectations, try to race as hard as you can and hopefully you come out on the good side of things. No one knows exactly what to expect but I am excited and hopeful that we’ll have a good run."

Johnson’s crew chief Cliff Daniels said Thursday that the team’s strategy is obviously to go for every point available – including earning those in the race’s early stages as well as being in position to go for the race win later.

“We’ve got to maximize everything. No excuses, it’s time to execute, put the best car on track and hopefully have a little luck on our side at the speedway race and just go fight it out to the end," Daniels said.

Xfinity Series returns to Daytona

While the NASCAR Xfinity Series still has five races remaining to set its 2020 12-driver Playoff field, judging by the intensity of recent races, there is already a concerted effort to establish championship favorites. And with the highly-competitive nature of this season, in particular, there may well be some new names among the title eligible before that first Playoff race on Sept. 26 in Las Vegas.

Friday night’s WAWA 250 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) sets up as a legitimate championship wildcard race. The last three Daytona Xfinity Series race winners – Noah Gragson, Ross Chastain and Michael Annett – are all currently Playoff eligible either by wins (Gragson) or points (Chastain and Annett).

The tightest battle among those contending for a points position into the Playoffs is that 12th and final spot currently held by Brandon Brown. He holds a 31-point edge on Jeremy Clements and a 58-point advantage on Myatt Snider.

This race has an interesting history – albeit its previous position on the schedule was a steamy July night held on the annual Independence Day Weekend NASCAR Cup Series race. Chevrolet drivers have won the last six Daytona Xfinity Series races. And three of the last four winners also led the most race laps. Gragson’s overtime win in February is the exception in that time.

Among those three currently vying for that 12th and final Playoff points transfer position, Brown boasts a pair of top-10 finishes in five starts with a career-best sixth place in last summer’s race answered with a seventh place this February. Clements has the most starts among the trio, but has scored only two top-10s in those 20 races. His best ever – eighth place – came in this race last year. Snider has only one start, winning the pole position in February’s season-opener but finishing 33rd after a mid-race accident.

Defending race winner Chastain is the highest ranked driver (eighth) among the present championship field still looking for their first victory of 2020. The Florida native has six top-10 finishes in 12 starts at Daytona. But his best work has come most recently. He scored the win last July – the Kaulig organization’s first - and has led 72 of his career total 75 laps at the track in the last three races there. He was 22nd in February.

“This was the site of our first victory (at Daytona), both for myself and in the team’s history last year," Chastain said. “I’m looking forward to it again.

“Kaulig Racing always brings super-fast speedway cars. It’s incredible. It’s unlike anything that many of the drivers, including myself, have ever driven. We’re able to be really aggressive and we’re also able to work together as you saw at Talladega (Superspeedway), which is a similar package. It took all three of the Kaulig Racing cars to work together to push Justin Haley to the win (at Talladega). We want to do the same thing."

Among the championship leaders, Chase Briscoe - who picked up his series-best sixth win at Dover International Speedway two weeks ago – earned his best Daytona finish in February, finishing fifth. Austin Cindric, who earned his fifth win of the season at the Daytona road course two weeks ago and leads the championship by 62 points over Briscoe, has two top-10s in five Daytona oval starts. His best work in the summer race is fourth. He crashed in the 2020 Daytona season opener.

Gragson’s win in February is his only top-10 finish in three Daytona Xfinity starts. Jeb Burton actually led the most laps (26) in the season opener but was involved in an accident up front at the end of the race.

Gander Trucks head to Gateway

Only three races remain to set the 2020 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series 10-driver Playoff field and as the standings sit now, there are three drivers contending for just two spots on points. Of course a new winner in Sunday’s CarShield 200 Presented by CK Power at Worldwide Technology Raceway at Gateway (12 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) could change things dramatically.

And drama has been a consistent theme this season – with first-time winners, potential new championship challengers and a hearty mix of veteran winners as well.

This week marks the grand finale of the popular Triple Truck Challenge – a three-race midseason incentive for fulltime competitors. Sheldon Creed won a $50,000 bonus for taking the victory on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course on Aug. 16 and Zane Smith got a $50,000 check for winning last week at Dover – the first two events for the challenge.

Should either Creed of Smith win Sunday’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, they would score an extra $50,000 – a total of $150,000 for winning two of the three races. A new winner this weekend earns an extra $50,000.

That money will be important, but so will the winner’s trophy which could represent an automatic ticket into the 2020 Playoffs.

Young drivers Tyler Ankrum, 19, Todd Gilliland, 20, and 18-year old Derek Kraus are currently vying for the last two Playoff positions. Ankrum, driver of the No. 26 GMS Racing Chevrolet, is in ninth place with a five-point edge on 11th place Derek Kraus. Gilliland, who drives the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford, trails Ankrum by one-point and is four points ahead of Kraus, driver of the No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing Toyota.

Gilliland and Kraus bring an impressive statistical resume to the track – good not only for their Playoff hopes, but notable in general. Gilliland has finished runner-up in two of his three Gateway starts (2018 and 2019). Kraus will be making his truck series debut this weekend, but he’s celebrated in Victory Lane already, with a 2018 win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race there and a runner-up in it last year.

We're halfway through the Monster Mile doubleheader at Dover International Speedway. NASCAR's grand experiment of back-to-back Cup Series races concludes with a second straight Drydene 311 on Sunday.

 

Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag first in Saturday's Act I. A dream season for the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver now includes his first win in 29 career starts at one of his worst tracks on the circuit.

 

"I think my style of driving typically doesn't fit this type of racetrack," Hamlin said after the race. "I have to adapt more to my teammates' style when I come here."

 

Once again, this season, it was Hamlin putting that education to use in the closing moments with a little assist from crew chief Chris Gabehart. The right setup during a long green-flag run allowed Hamlin to run down, then blow by teammate Martin Truex Jr. in the final 10 laps to seal the victory. His sixth win of 2020 has him firmly established with Kevin Harvick as one of this season's championship favorites.

 

"We're rolling at tracks that we just are not typically great at," Hamlin said. "That gives me confidence. Chris just dials it in, really does a good job with the racecar."

 

His success came on a day the Monster Mile continued to be a muted version of its former self. A one-mile oval that once ate up racecars and spit them out had an early wreck involving Kurt Busch and Erik Jones. But after that? The rest of the day went caution-free except for the scheduled competition yellow on lap 25 along with two stage breaks.

 

Were drivers being less aggressive knowing they had to strap in and race tomorrow? It did seem the new short track package helped the racing at Dover a little bit. Passing still remains at a premium, though with drivers sliding all over the racetrack. The closing battle for the win provided some hope tomorrow will be better, although there's an asterisk attached. The lapped car of Aric Almirola provided a little assist for Hamlin to close the gap.

 

"I was fine with [Almirola] running where he wanted to run," said second-place finisher Martin Truex Jr. "Which was pinned on the white line on the bottom. I had a problem with every time I'd try to move up, he would drive up the racetrack in front of me.

 

"Not cool to do to the leader when second is catching him. I think that's kind of sh*tty, to be honest."

 

Besides the lead, Dover's other big early storyline is Jimmie Johnson moving his way back into the 16-driver postseason field. Johnson, who has a NASCAR-best 11 Dover victories, climbed over teammate William Byron with a solid, consistent seventh-place finish. Byron had himself a horrible day that included a shouting match on the radio with Johnson's former crew chief, Chad Knaus. A 28th-place finish now leaves him three points out with Jones just 22 behind.

 

Can Johnson put the bid out of reach by ending his victory drought in Sunday's race? A win there would leave Matt DiBenedetto vulnerable; he's just 27 ahead of Byron and sitting without a win himself. The plot thickens as just two races remain in NASCAR's regular season.

 

Add in a questionable weather forecast (thunderstorms on the horizon) and Sunday's event should be a mightier performance from a Monster Mile fighting to remain on the schedule in 2021.

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing

JGR had a 1-2-3 finish with Hamlin winning, Truex second and Kyle Busch third. They've earned seven top-3 finishes in the last three races, running 2-3 at Michigan International Speedway and the Daytona road course. Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott took the wins in those races, respectively but JGR wasn't far behind.

 

Who's at the Back: Kurt Busch

"Unbelievable." That was Busch's reaction on the radio when an errant tap from Erik Jones sent him spinning into the inside wall on the backstretch. Busch's race was over just six laps in, his first DNF since the season-opening Daytona 500. The 40th-place result was also his worst performance since the fall event at Kansas Speedway in October 2014.

 

Luckily, a winless Busch still retains a strong playoff cushion for Chip Ganassi Racing. He's 88 points ahead of Byron with two races left and should clinch a spot tomorrow as long as there's no back-to-back DNFs left on his resume.

Corey Lajoie will be leaving Go FAS Racing at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Lajoie confirmed the news Friday as rumors heated up the team will increase its alliance with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2021. Lajoie sits 29th in the point standings with just a single top-10 finish this year, an eighth in the Daytona 500 season opener.

 

Suspended NASCAR driver Kyle Larson gave his first interview to the Associated Press since the racial slur that caused his firing from Chip Ganassi Racing. Larson claimed, "I was just ignorant" while expressing his desire to work his way back into stock car racing. Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart has been among those interested in potentially hiring Larson.

 

Jimmie Johnson might run more 2021 races after all... in IndyCar. The seven-time NASCAR Cup champion is retiring from full-time stock car racing after 2020 but is increasingly turning his attention to open-wheel racing. With proper sponsorship, the 44-year-old said he'd like to run the full road course and street schedule next year for INDYCAR and didn't rule out an Indianapolis 500 appearance come 2022.

For the second set of Dover races, the top 20 finishers will be inverted. That means second-place runner Martin Truex Jr. will go from second to 19th on the grid. That's all the more reason to start him for daily fantasy position differential points.

 

Isn't it hard to believe Truex has just one win this season? I feel like that's an undercount for how the No. 19 team has performed. Truex's three career wins at Dover are the most for him at any Cup Series track and Saturday's speed shows he's in strong position to add a fourth.

 

How about third-place finisher Kyle Busch? Busch started 22nd, one of his worst qualifying efforts of the year after disaster in the Daytona road course race. But he found a way to work through traffic and ended the day with a top-5 result, learning important lessons he'll put to use Sunday when starting 18th. Again, position differential points make the difference in a doubleheader and KyBu has an outside shot to break his victory drought.

Middle Tier

 

I think you have to stick with Jimmie Johnson here, right? It's the final Dover start of his storied career and Johnson is desperate for that 12th career victory at the track to lock up a playoff bid. He was the fastest Chevrolet for most of the day, battling for that mantle with Chase Elliott, and appeared pretty speedy during the final stage. A 13th-place starting spot has him in better position than his main rivals tomorrow and the No. 48 team could use that track position to their advantage.

 

Clint Bowyer had one of his most consistent runs of the year with a sixth-place finish on Saturday. Suddenly, the No. 14 team is hitting on all eight cylinders and has three straight top-10 finishes with Bowyer at the Monster Mile. A much cheaper play than Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick should make him a much better fit for your roster.

 

Lower Tier

 

How about rookie Christopher Bell? At times, Bell showed speed with the No. 95 Toyota at a track where he's been victorious in NASCAR's Xfinity Series. But a 22nd-place result will leave him back in the pack for Sunday's race instead of starting up front with the top-20 inversion. In the end, that could lead to bonus points as Bell will benefit from a Saturday debrief with Toyota pseudo-teammates that ran 1-2-3.

 

Ryan Preece is another driver who will start out back (25th Saturday at Dover) yet have a better chance at Sunday improvement. JTG Daugherty Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had one of his better races of 2020, flexing his muscle in particular over long green-flag runs to finish 10th. An updated setup could help Preece's chances while providing those precious (yep, here it comes again) position differential points.

 

What Vegas Thinks

The odds have not been updated for Sunday's race at press time. However, Martin Truex Jr. (+350) was the favorite of most sports books before this doubleheader began and a second-place finish will do little to change that.
