Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Daytona International Speedway Road Course Starts: Joe Graf Jr. will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in Saturday afternoon’s UNOH 188 at the 14-turn Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course.

Turning Lefts and Rights Again: For the third time in his NASCAR Xfinity Series career, Joe Graf Jr. will compete on a road course. Graf, 22, has never seen the 3.56-mile, 14-turn road course before Saturday’s UNOH 188.

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Career Road Course Nuggets: At tracks classified as a road course, Graf has competed in just two NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Road America (Wisc.) respectively.

He holds an average starting position of 27.5 (per rule book) and an average result of 25.5 with 100 percent of the laps complete.

Put Me In Coach: During this weekend’s Xfinity weekend at Daytona, Graf Jr. is working with fellow NASCAR driver Will Rodgers who will serve in a dual role as a spotter and driver coach for the 19th Xfinity Series race of the season.

Rodgers an experienced road racer has four ARCA Menards Series wins between the East and West divisions, including victories at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP).

Rodgers will be able to give Graf Jr. firsthand knowledge of the Daytona Road Course as he’s set to make his seventh career ARCA Menards Series premier start in Friday afternoon’s General Tire 100 in Daytona Beach.

Like Graf Jr., Donahue will make his Xfinity Series debut as crew chief on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course.

Since 1974, Michigan International Speedway has been a mainstay on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, playing host to two races per year. But this two-mile oval will break new ground in 2020 by hosting those races about 24 hours apart.

 

MIS becomes the second attempt at a NASCAR weekend doubleheader this summer as the sport experiments with its schedule during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, no fans will witness twice the action along with the shortest scheduled races in MIS history: 312 miles (156 laps) apiece. The hope is smaller stage lengths (the first one is just 40 laps) will up the level of competition at a track that's seen the leader pull away all too easily in recent years.

 

With only six races left in the regular season, it's a make-or-break weekend for several drivers fighting for a playoff bid. The 10 drivers with a win this season have now clinched their spots but that also means a victory from any other full-time driver locks them in the field, too. Matt Kenseth, for example, could go from zero to hero despite sitting 28th in the standings; his Chip Ganassi Racing team has won with his No. 42 car in recent years.

 

It's also an open audition for some heading into 2021. Silly Season heated up this week as in a matter of days, Leavine Family Racing announced the sale of its No. 95 team, Erik Jones announced his departure from Joe Gibbs Racing next season and Bubba Wallace was offered partial ownership in the No. 43 to stay at Richard Petty Motorsports.

 

In the meantime, Brad Keselowski signed a contract extension with Roger Penske, taking him off the market while Tyler Reddick reaffirmed his commitment to Richard Childress Racing. Keep in mind all this news happened since Sunday once the checkered flag fell at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

 

That ups the stakes for the racing at Michigan around the bubble. Clint Bowyer, 43 points ahead of Reddick for the final playoff spot, might be racing for his own contract extension at Stewart-Haas Racing. Jimmie Johnson is hoping to salvage his final full-time season while a fellow bubble driver, Jones, looks to potentially take his spot in the No. 48 come 2021. And Michael McDowell, up to 20th in points with a career year at Front Row Motorsports, is looking to keep his job there over the long term with a miracle postseason bid.

 

They'll all jockey for position at a speedway that's near the epicenter of American manufacturing. Lately, it's been the Blue Oval crowd that's been able to brag after races at Michigan; Ford has won four straight races at the track. Before that, it was a three-race win streak from Chevrolet as American-born manufacturers have earned all but one Cup victory here since the start of the 2012 season.

 

Toyota's tough history here is another obstacle for Kyle Busch, whose last-place finish at New Hampshire opened the door just enough that the defending NASCAR champion could miss the playoffs with a catastrophic August. Can Busch get it together to win and lock in a spot before the regular season finishes up?

 

That's plenty of storylines to set the stage in what NASCAR hopes will be a competitive weekend in the Irish Hills. A loss of a date on the 2021 schedule seems unlikely but, then again, that's what is rumored for the other tracks hosting doubleheaders this season: Pocono Raceway and Dover International Speedway (Dover's date loss is already confirmed). Two solid, exciting races after one too many snoozers could help keep MIS from sitting on the chopping block.

Who's at the Front: Brad Keselowski

Team Penske's top veteran reminded everyone he's a dark horse title contender by cruising past Denny Hamlin to win Sunday's New Hampshire race with ease. It's the fifth straight year Keselowski has posted at least three victories driving the No. 2 Ford, a remarkable run of consistency he kept up this year despite a crew chief swap to Jeremy Bullins.

 

A rocky start to 2020 had some thinking Kes was on his way out at Penske. But the day after this race, a one-year contract extension kept him at the organization he's been with for over a decade now. One of the smartest drivers in the sport, in hindsight, made the best career move for his long-term finances. Why sign a long-term deal now with 2021 the end of the pandemic (we hope) and a top-tier ride still potentially available at Hendrick Motorsports?

 

Who's at the Back: Christopher Bell

Bell's future seems bright with an almost-certain promotion to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2021. But it could be a rough ride for him in a Leavine Family Racing team that'll wind down operations the rest of the year. Bell now has three straight finishes outside the top 20 and his 28th-place performance at New Hampshire came at a place where the Cup rookie never lost in two NASCAR Xfinity Series victories.

Bob Leavine's sale of the No. 95 team came with a frightening warning for teams searching for sponsorship this offseason. "We looked at our marketing people and we are going to be lucky to sell $50,000 worth for the rest of the year," Leavine said. "Big companies are going bankrupt. They can't invest in something that has no more return than what they are going to get — during a pandemic." Leavine has spent nearly a decade competing at the Cup level but only has six top-five finishes in 240 career starts.

 

The No. 95 sale, which didn't include any equipment, leaves one less well-funded Toyota seat to go around. That likely forced the release of Jones, whose three-year tenure with Joe Gibbs Racing was marked by unfulfilled potential. "I greatly appreciate the opportunity that JGR provided me with and I wish the team nothing but success and good fortune," Jones said. "JGR gave me a solid foundation from which to go out and compete at the highest level and I look forward to building on that in the years to come." Jones has two victories since taking the helm of the No. 20 Toyota before the 2018 season; previous driver Matt Kenseth won eight times in a nearly three-year stretch.

 

NASCAR has changed its qualifying draw procedure beginning with next weekend's Daytona road course event. Instead of automatically guaranteeing the top 12 spots to the top 12 in owner points, the new system will allow a variety of teams to compete for the pole. The new formula calculates each driver's starting spot based on their finishing position in the previous race (50 percent), their points position (35 percent), and their fastest lap (15 percent). However, once the postseason begins, only playoff drivers will be eligible to start up front.

A contract extension? A win at New Hampshire? A Michigan native? I'd say it's time to ride the hot hand with Brad Keselowski. He's never won at this track, sure, but that makes him a bargain price at a track where he hasn't run outside the top 20 since 2011. While there are flashier picks on the market, Keselowski brings the best bang for his buck.

 

Kevin Harvick has led the charge during Ford's four-race Cup win streak at Michigan. During that stretch, he's won twice, including July of last year, and led 194 laps while posting four straight top-10 finishes. If he starts out strong to start the weekend, expect back-to-back top-5 performances for him that could prove to be the backbone of your team.

Middle Tier

 

Back-to-back top-10 finishes for Alex Bowman last season at Michigan bode well for his 2020 chances. This track is a virtual clone to the Auto Club Speedway track where Bowman won earlier this year. Since then, the No. 88 team has lost its way but a doubleheader weekend provides a 1-2 punch for a summer reset.

 

Chip Ganassi Racing offers two attractive, mid-priced options with veterans looking to turn their seasons around. Kurt Busch has a solid history at MIS, earning three career wins, and was second at this track in June of last year. And Matt Kenseth has a new crew chief, Phil Surgen, to help jump-start a rocky 2020 comeback. His personal career history at Michigan (three wins, 11.3 career average finish) meshes well with a No. 42 team that won three straight races here in 2016-17.

 

Lower Tier

 

Michael McDowell is 20th in the season standings? The former start-and-parker is over the moon after a season's worth of overachieving with Front Row Motorsports. Ignore a history of no top-20 finishes in 12 starts and drool over the cheap price to stash him on the bottom of a roster.

 

Ty Dillon has quietly put together two top-15 finishes in eight MIS starts. One of them came last July with Germain Racing and he hopes to bring that momentum into 2020's doubleheader. It's another cheap option in daily fantasy to leave space for others that can contend for the win.

Kevin Harvick has 4/1 odds to win the first Michigan race, followed by Denny Hamlin at 6/1. Joey Logano, the defending race winner, sits third at 13/2.

For at least the opening eight races of the reshuffled 2020 F1 season each driver will be given the same allocation of tyres per race: eight sets of soft tyres, three sets of medium tyres and two sets of hard tyres. Pirelli will also supply a range of wet and intermediate tyres for each driver.

The Henry 180 on Saturday headlines a weekend that has been restructured, like just about everything else this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series is on track just one day, with no practice or qualifying before the start on the 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake. The 45-lap race is the 18th of 31 on schedule that has changed numerous times.

Other series in action over the three-day weekend will be the popular Stadium Super Trucks, Trans Am and Lamborghini Super Trofeo.

Here’s what you need to know:

Nuts and bolts

When: The Henry 180 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Broadcasts: TV – NBCSN. Radio – MRN, including AM-920 in Milwaukee.

2019 recap: Christopher Bell held off road-racing veteran A.J. Allmendinger lap after lap and then beat him on a late restart and drove away for the first road-course victory of his promising career.  Allmendinger got bounced around and fell to 24th. Austin Cindric, who’d won the two previous road races, stopped for fresh tires before the shootout and drove from 17th to second.

Support series: Testing and practice Thursday, practice and qualifying Friday. Lamborghini races are set for 4:15 p.m. Friday and 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Trans Am is set for 8 a.m. Saturday to start the day, with the separate TA2 race following NASCAR. Super Trucks have races at 10:15 a.m. and 3:35 p.m. Saturday.

Five storylines

Practice, practice: Well … actually no practice, at least in Xfinity cars, for the entire field, including a drivers who may never seen Road America in person. Rookies Riley Herbst and Harrison Burton both are entered in Trans Am’s TA2 race, which has testing, practice and qualifying sessions totaling 3 hours on the track before the first lap of the Henry 180.

Leader of the pack: Austin Cindric sits atop the standings after winning three straight races in July. He finished second last year, giving up third place for fresh tires with two laps to go and then storming through the field. But Cindric’s previous results and average finish of 18.3 are deceiving. In his series debut in 2017, he started from the pole and got caught up in an accident while running in the top five. In 2018, he led two laps and had a competitive run ended by an engine failure.

Do-able double? Road America begins its second decade in the series and has had different drivers win each of the first 10 races. Three drivers could end that streak: A.J. Allmendinger (2013), Justin Allgaier (2017) and Jeremy Clements (2018).

Student of the sport: Chase Briscoe, who came into NASCAR off open-wheel short-track racing, has developed into a very solid road racer. The most recent of his series-best five victories this season came on the infield course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with mirrors full of Cindric. He led two laps and finished seventh last year in his first Road America race and was back last weekend with IMSA to reacquaint himself with the layout.

The start of something messy: Because of the varying degrees of experience and road-racing acumen in the field and the fact that the lineup will be set by draw rather than qualifying, expect a jumble – or maybe complete chaos – when the green flag flies. Think of Allmendinger desperate to pick his way through the field from the rear one-third while young newcomers tread lightly at the front. The Turn 1 gravel trap is huge; expect the corner workers in 3 and 5 to be busy, as well.

The rankings below are based on a mixture of expected output and DraftKings’ NASCAR salaries for Saturday’s race at Road America. The ordering is not based on the highest projected fantasy totals, but rather by value of each driver. Note: fppk = average fantasy points per $1,000 of salary.

1. Austin Hill ($10,100) - Hatorri has won this race two years in a row, and crew chief Scott Zipadelli has built a race winning truck in three of his five Michigan races. Hill is the favorite to win and to lead the most laps.

2. Brett Moffitt ($9,700) - Last year, Moffit earned the most fast laps, but that does not mean that he had the best car. He did in fact have one of the best cars, but his fast lap points are the product of the Michigan draft and a divergent four tire strategy on the final run.

3. Zane Smith ($8,400) - NASCAR truck series debates are rare because there are few topics and few actual fans to carry forth such meaningless debates. However, one interesting debate has emerged - is Zane Smith the best driver in the Truck Series? At first glance this seems farcical, but after a close inspection of the video and data, it no longer seems to be simply a contrarian stance.

4. Christian Eckes ($9,300) - In six of the last eight races, Ecekes has a top-5 driver rating. His team was way off with the setup in Kansas 1, but they rebounded with a setup that earned the third highest driver rating at Kansas 2.

5. Matt Crafton ($9,900) - A clutch issue forced Crafton to start from the rear of the field at Michigan last year, but he had no problem driving his way into the top 10. On the penultimate restart, Crafton lined up behind the leader and proceeded to dump Tyler Ankrum causing a massive pile up.

6. Chandler Smith ($9,500) - He’s a great young racer, but a flat footed race is foreign to him. His skills honed on the short tracks won’t be of great use this weekend. Smith has a great truck, but this race is closer to a plate race at Daytona than it is to a traditional intermediate track race, let alone a short track race.

7. Grant Enfinger ($7,900) - He finished third in both Kansas races. That’s Grant Efinger this year and his career. He’s not a winner, he’s a good driver. Sure, the stat sheet says otherwise, but no one that is serious values a plate track win, and his Atlanta win was the result of a caution that erased a 16-second deficit.

8. Derek Kraus ($7,700) - The Truck Series rookie crop provides hope for the future of the sport, but the realists know that the economics of this industry have long since abandoned meritocracy. Enjoy this moment while it lasts. Kraus and McAnally Racing are having a breakthrough season in their first full-time year, and Michigan’s plate track tendencies open the possibility for a first win.

9. Ben Rhodes ($8,100) - Matt Crafton finally got his win last week, so it could be Ben Rhodes’ turn. His other ThorSport teammate, Grant Enfinger, another notorious bridesmaid, broke through and earned two wins this season. The heat is on Rhodes. Why can’t he win like his teammates?

10. Ty Majeski ($6,700) - For a rookie, Majeski is having a solid season. In fact, it’s fair to say that he is having a great season when lack of practice and strength of field are considered. DFS players have high expectations for Niece trucks following Chastain’s performance last season, but comprehensive analysis can easily diminish the significance of those wins.

11. Sheldon Creed ($8,500) - Following his rain-shortened win at Kentucky, Creed has wrecked in two of the last three races. His truck is fast and he is talented, but DFS players have struggled with Creed’s volatility over the last two seasons.

12. Stewart Friesen ($9,100) - After a win at Phoenix, Friesen was on the cusp of becoming the 2019 champion. What followed was a manufacturer change, a global pandemic, and a long string of forgettable performances.

13. John Hunter Nemechek ($11,100) - It’s never a lock when it’s a Nemechek. This is a very nice spot, but last year and this year, Nemechek flopped in prime spots. His dad was able to finish 20th in this truck at Michigan last year.

14. Parker Kligerman ($10,800) - This is a fairly safe cash play, but Kligerman might not work in GPP lineups. His path to 50 points is easy and very likely, but there are a handful of drivers that are over $1,000 cheaper that have an easy path to 50 points as well.

15. Brennan Poole ($7,000) - Nothing has changed since last season. Poole is a top-20 intermediate track driver. Sometimes, he gets a little greedy and chases a top 10 and his aggression is rewarded with a DNF. However, most of the time he plays it safe and takes what his small team can get.

16. Tanner Gray ($7,600) - The tale of two Tanner’s can best be understood by comparing two data points. Tanner Gray’s average driver rating ranks 17th. His average finish is 14th. In the second Kansas race, Gray was the 12th best driver, but he earned a fourth place finish.

17. Raphael Lessard ($7,400) - The good news is that this rookie is a 15th place driver, but the bad news is that he is not improving at all. His driver rating has remained static all season. He was a 15th place driver at Las Vegas and six months later, he was a 15th place driver at Kansas.

18. Johnny Sauter ($10,400) - It’s inexcusable for a past champion in great equipment to earn two 33rd place finishes in two of the last three races. Unfortunately, these types of performances have become common for Sauter since joining ThorSport in 2019.

19. Tyler Ankrum ($8,700) - He was in the catbird seat with three laps left in the 2019 Michigan race. All Ankrum had to do was get a clean start and handle Matt Crafton’s push into turn one. Ankrum spun the tires slightly and Crafton sent Ankrum into the wall.

20. Todd Gilliland ($8,900) - This race is a mess on restarts and it’s likely that Gilliland wrecks during one of them, but he needs them. Gilliland is not going to win this race on a long run. He needs chaos and Michigan needs to do its best impression of Daytona.

The 2020 Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway jumpstarts the final portion of the NASCAR Cup Series regular season after a 10-day layoff. It's a break stock car racing's top level desperately needed after squeezing 16 races into a little over 10 weeks, an exhausting schedule even for the most well-funded teams.

 

In a world where COVID-19 has taken a wrecking ball to sports all across the country, August will mark a milestone. By the end of it, NASCAR is on pace to be back on schedule to finish its season. That's impressive, especially considering how stick-and-ball sports tend to be sputtering in their attempted return. (Major League Baseball is rumored to be shutting down as soon as Monday following a slew of positive tests).

 

NASCAR's COVID-19 successful summer recovery has continued. But boy, what a sprint it's going to be to get to the finish line.

 

After toying with the midweek racing experiment throughout much of May, June and July, the sport's focus now turns toward a different idea: doubleheaders. Twin bills at Michigan International Speedway and Dover International Speedway this month mean the Cup Series will run seven races in a 27-day stretch. That's over a quarter of the regular season still to go, turning the Dog Days of August into a heated sprint to set the 16-driver playoff field.

 

For the 10 who have all but clinched a bid, that's no big deal. They can breathe a sigh of relief, experiment and prep for the races that matter up next. But for Jimmie Johnson, William Byron, Clint Bowyer, and others sitting on the postseason bubble? The pressure is about to ramp up considerably.

 

This schedule might benefit seven-time Cup champ Johnson the most. Dover is the best track of his career, a place where he's earned a record 11 victories and led over 3,000 career laps. If there's a place he'll end a three-year winless streak, the Monster Mile is it.

 

The Busch brothers are also poised, on paper, to cash in at one of these ovals on the August schedule. Kyle, the reigning Cup Series champ, hasn't won a race yet during a frustrating 2020. Older brother Kurt, the 2004 Cup champion, has a great track record at Michigan and is in perfect position to steal one of those doubleheader events.

 

But all that bubble talk can wait a week. The northeast track of New Hampshire up next is a 1.058-mile oval expected to cater to those already at the top of the current Cup standings. Even with the sport's new handling package, it's a place where passing someone is an art form with its tight, flat corners.

 

That means you could be stuck for 15, maybe even 20 laps behind a slower car before moving around them. Add in clean air, a qualifying draw that automatically places the top 12 drivers in points up front and... voila! You've got a race tailor-made for the sport's best to dominate.

 

The current championship contenders already have a history of successful performances here. Points leader Kevin Harvick is the defending race winner. Denny Hamlin came in second last July and enters this weekend with momentum after winning at Kansas Speedway July 23. Both drivers start this weekend's race inside the top seven.

 

This race will also be about one last salute to fans at the track; up to 12,000 are expected to attend Sunday's event. As of now, fans will also be allowed at Daytona International Speedway later this month, but COVID-19 cases continue to peak down in Florida. Their continued rise casts doubt on whether NASCAR can ultimately follow through come race time. Will this weekend, then, be the last time we see a significant number of fans in the stands until the postseason begins?

 

This much we know for sure: the fans who do attend on Sunday are hopeful to see a better NHMS race due to the sport's short track package tweak. Can we see a boost in excitement to a facility that had put on races so mediocre in recent years NASCAR took a playoff race date away?

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing

Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag at Kansas, the first time any JGR Toyota had visited victory lane since Pocono Raceway at the end of June. More importantly, though this four-car organization put all four of its cars inside the top 5, with Martin Truex Jr. (third) and Erik Jones (fifth) contenders all night long. Even Kyle Busch (11th) led 52 laps and won a stage before fading as the race wore on.

 

It's a good sign for a JGR group that, as a whole, took a slight step back this season after winning over 50 percent of the races during 2019. This year has been harder, but they're still plenty capable of putting three drivers in the Championship 4 a second straight year.

 

Who's at the Back: JTG Daugherty Racing

The last month or so couldn't have been worse for a two-car program hoping to grow into a playoff team in 2020. Ryan Preece's No. 37 has four straight DNFs, including three straight last-place finishes, while destroying multiple cars in some nasty wrecks. The Kansas one, in particular, was a harrowing ordeal in which the Connecticut driver was lucky to walk away unhurt.

 

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., after sneaking into the fringes of playoff contention, hasn't fared much better. He's got three DNFs in the last four races, including a last-place finish of his own at Kansas, that's seen him slump from 30 points outside the bubble to an insurmountable 130.

 

News Briefs

 

An old NASCAR face is popping up in a new place: IndyCar racing. Cole Pearn, who left his role as Martin Truex Jr.'s crew chief at the end of last season, is moving to Ed Carpenter Racing to serve in an engineering role for the 2020 Indianapolis 500. Pearn had expressed a desire to spend more time with family last offseason, leaving JGR and temporarily retiring back to his native Canada. Pearn and Truex had made the Championship 4 together for three straight years, winning once with Furniture Row Racing in 2017.

 

SRX Racing continues to add a slew of drivers to its field for next summer's primetime debut on CBS. Former IndyCar star Paul Tracy, who last raced full-time in 2007, will join a 12-driver group that also includes Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan. Current NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon also is among those being pursued by his former crew chief-turned-SRX co-founder, Ray Evernham.

 

NASCAR Hall of Famer Maurice Petty passed away last week at the age of 81. The chief engine builder for Petty Enterprises was credited with a total of 212 victories, serving as King Richard's right-hand man along with crew chief Dale Inman in the glory years of the No. 43 team.

Top-10 finishes for Ryan Newman since returning from the crash that nearly killed him in the last lap of February's Daytona 500. That ninth-place finish, skidding upside down across the finish line in a shower of sparks, remains his best of the year.

Straight races where 48-year-old veteran Matt Kenseth has been involved in a wreck that caused a caution flag. That's after his second-place surprise finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of just two top-10 finishes he's collected all season.

 

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

 

Top Tier

 

Starting up front at New Hampshire is more of an advantage than most other tracks on the circuit. That means second-place starter Denny Hamlin is in position to lead early and often. He did that last year, pacing the field for 113 laps before ultimately winding up in second place. Eight straight top-15 finishes here mean the No. 11 team is poised to succeed again.

 

JGR teammate Kyle Busch should also have a strong performance at the Magic Mile. He's got six straight top-12 finishes, won a playoff race here in 2017, and led a race-high 118 laps last year before finishing eighth. Busch might have a slightly better price, due to this 2020 struggles, that'll make him an easier fit in your lineup.

Middle Tier

 

Pole sitter Aric Almirola isn't poised to get you any position differential points. But how can you bet against a guy who hasn't finished outside the top 10 since the middle of June? A recent run of top performances should continue at New Hampshire, a track where he's run third and 11th in two career starts with Stewart-Haas Racing.

 

I'm going to keep riding the JGR momentum with Erik Jones and the No. 20 Toyota. Jones has two top-10 finishes in four New Hampshire starts, including a solid third-place effort last year. His recent run back to the fringes of the top 16 in points has been overshadowed a bit; another top-5 run Sunday almost certainly puts him on the right side of that playoff bubble.

 

Lower Tier

 

Rookie Christopher Bell is going to be impossible to ignore. He won both his starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at New Hampshire, putting together picture-perfect runs with JGR equipment. The question is whether he can duplicate that on a single-car team, Leavine Family Racing, who doesn't quite have the same level of historical success. (In their defense, the team ran fifth in 2019 with Matt DiBenedetto.)

 

Keep an eye on Front Row Motorsports' Michael McDowell, one of the biggest surprises of 2020. His NHMS average finish is a putrid 33.9 but that stat is highly misleading; it includes a number of start-and-parks. McDowell's 17th-place finish here last July was his best and it came with the same No. 34 Ford team he'll drive with Sunday.

 

What Vegas Thinks

Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin are on top of the charts for NHMS with 4/1 and 9/2 odds, respectively. Vegasinsider.com has Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. sitting right behind them at 7/1.

 

A decent longshot would be Matt Kenseth, a driver with a long history of success here with JGR (now driving Chip Ganassi Racing's No. 42). He's sitting out there at 40/1.
