Hollywood Ride of Fame

Tuesday time: 9am-7pm
Wednesday time: 9am – 11am

Location: Hollywood & Highland, 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood CA (Hollywood Blvd. between Highland & Orange)

LA’s iconic Hollywood Boulevard is just days away from being closed to non-Formula 1 traffic when the world championship brings its F1 Festival to the streets of Los Angeles for the first time on October 29-30.

Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will make the detour to Southern California ahead of their visit to Austin for next weekend’s United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas to bring a taste of F1 into the heart of the City of Angels, giving fans a chance to see three grand prix winners and their teams – Mercedes, Red Bull and Renault – up close.

In addition to the F1 car demonstrations, which will include live runs, the Festival will also feature musical events, opening with a live performance of the Formula 1 theme by Bryan Tyler and his orchestra integrated with an F1 demo run to create an exhilarating aural experience.

The party opens on Tuesday, October 29 with a two-day Hollywood Ride of Fame car exhibition along Hollywood Boulevard, featuring multiple F1 and other exotic cars from across the ages. But the headline act is on Wednesday evening, when the drivers arrive – and the cars are fired up.

While the F1 cars and stars form the centerpiece, there will also be plenty to enjoy among the support acts, which include Red Bull parachutists, stunt bikes, acrobats, and a live DJ and MC.

Time: Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. ET
Track: Kansas Speedway (Kansas City, KS)
TV: NBC
Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Chase Elliott is the defending winner of the Hollywood Casino 400. It remains his only victory on an intermediate track in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

For Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports to salvage their season, Elliott may need to have lightning strike twice.

The equivalent of stock car racing’s New York Yankees is on the verge of a very un-Hendrick-like accomplishment. Elliott, William Byron, and Alex Bowman are on the outside of the playoff cutline looking in heading into Sunday's (Oct. 20) race at the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Kansas Speedway. All of them are at least 18 points behind the last driver in, Joey Logano, meaning they'll almost certainly need a win to advance.

And if not? HMS will go without a driver in the Round of 8 for the first time since the current playoff format was adopted in 2014. It would almost certainly mean they’ll fail to put a driver inside the top 5 in points for a second straight year.

The last time Hendrick encountered that type of back-to-back slump? That was back in 1999 and 2000. Seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson (who failed to qualify for the playoffs this year) wasn't even a full-time regular in the Cup Series yet. Byron and Elliott were still in preschool.

"This is the toughest round of 12 I've been a part of in my four years," Elliott said Friday. "Really, I think all 12 teams and drivers are pretty good that are left right now. I think we knew coming into this round that it wasn't going to be easy. We knew it was going to be tough to move on. That's where we're at, it's tough. Here we are."

That said, this four-car organization has reasons to be hopeful. Bowman ran second in the Kansas race in May, leading 63 laps. Elliott was fourth in that event and led 45 laps of his own. But both struggled during Friday's practice along with Byron; none of the trio (along with Johnson) cracked the top 10 in either session.

Losing Hendrick from the Round of 8 would leave just one Chevrolet driver left in the playoff field (Kyle Larson from Chip Ganassi Racing). It's a bitter pill to swallow in the second year of the new Camaro chassis, trailing badly in the manufacturer's race after only seven wins in the year's first 31 races. And with limited changes in the 2020 rules package before the expected debut of NASCAR's Gen-7 car in 2021? Relief may not be coming for this group anytime soon.

"You can't lose sleep over the fact that we've tried to do all we can to get to this point," added William Byron Friday. "That's just the situation that we're in and we just have to go do our jobs. That's just how I try to approach it, but it's stressful for sure."

Stressful and surprising if Hendrick fails to clear the bar altogether for the next round of NASCAR's 2019 playoffs.

Who's at the Front: Ryan Blaney
Blaney benefitted from a game of Survivor: Talladega Superspeedway as virtually the entire field was involved in some sort of crash last Sunday. Blaney's No. 12 Ford emerged from the wreckage for his third career win, each of them under bizarre circumstances. He was the benefactor of pit strategy back at Pocono Raceway in 2017, then the third-place driver at Charlotte last fall when Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. crashed in front of him.

But the end result places him in the Round of 8, one of three Team Penske drivers (Brad Keselowski, Logano) likely to advance.

Who's at the Back: Daniel Suarez
Suarez just missed out on the 16-driver playoffs, falling short by one position to teammate Clint Bowyer. Since then, Bowyer has surged while Suarez has slumped badly, throwing his long-term future with Stewart-Haas Racing into question. He's got two finishes of 30th or worse in the last three races, including a bad wreck at Talladega last weekend, and has fallen behind Johnson in the 17th-place battle for "Best of The Rest" in points.

News Briefs

Clint Bowyer's future was firmed up this week with a 2020 contract extension to continue driving for Stewart-Haas Racing. Bowyer's won twice in three seasons with the team, making the playoffs in back-to-back years although a winless 2019 left his future a question mark through much of the summer. He's currently 11th in points and could potentially still advance to the Round of 8 under the right circumstances.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will move to JTG-Daugherty Racing to drive for their Chevrolet Cup team in 2020. Stenhouse replaces Chris Buescher, who is moving to Roush Fenway Racing, in what effectively becomes a ride swap between the two drivers. It'll be the first Cup ride outside of RFR for Stenhouse, driver of the No. 17 Ford since the start of the 2013 season. He has two wins and just one playoff appearance in seven years of Cup competition.

NASCAR and ISC completed their merger this week. The deal puts together both the business arm of the sport and several of its tracks as consolidation continues into one large private company. Could a buyout of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. and its dozen Cup dates on the schedule be next on the horizon?

NASCAR by the Numbers

5th

Finish for Michael McDowell at Talladega last Sunday, tied for his best of the year. Two top-5 runs for the underdog driver is a new season-high for him in the Cup Series.

17

Races since Kyle Busch last visited Victory Lane in the Cup Series. That's typically not a long streak for a driver but considering Busch's 13 wins combined in Cup, Xfinity, and Gander Outdoors Truck series competition this year? It's a bit unusual.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Kansas Speedway has typically been Kevin Harvick's playground as of late. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver just needs to learn how to close the deal at this facility. Don't be fooled by runs of 12th and 13th in his last two starts; he could easily have won both those races, leading a total of 180 laps between them. A pit road speeding penalty and a suspected flat tire, respectively, killed his chances for victory lane in those events. They say bad news typically comes in threes but I feel like you'll be able to trust him this time around.

A solid alternative might be Team Penske's Brad Keselowski. The May winner has five straight top-15 finishes here, including this win, and is looking to re-establish momentum entering the Round of 8.

Middle Tier

Clint Bowyer doesn't have the greatest history at his hometown track. But a fifth-place finish back in the spring was his best run here in six years; borrowing setup and practice notes from teammate Harvick can only help. Sprinkle in the pressure of trying to make the next round, add the boost of a contract extension and that equals a potential surprise winning performance here.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. isn't in the playoffs. He isn't even with this Roush Fenway Racing team next season. But what he does have is three top-11 finishes in the last five Kansas races, paired with 22 laps led. There are plenty of options in this range but Stenhouse might offer a lower price than the rest, an under-the-radar pick for maximum value in daily fantasy.

Lower Tier

Rookie Daniel Hemric was 18th in his first Kansas Cup start but ran strong in Friday's practice sessions. Hemric is auditioning hard for a 2020 spot in this division and recently lost out on an opportunity with JTG-Daugherty Racing, increasing his sense of urgency. A top-10 run is not out of the question here as the clock keeps ticking.

Another rookie, Matt Tifft, has cleaned up his act as of late, posting two top-20 finishes in his last four starts. He was 21st at Kansas back in May, a reasonable result with middling Front Row Motorsports and will be another good max-value pick at a lower price.

What Vegas Thinks
Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick lead the way with 9/2 odds at Kansas, followed by Kyle Busch at 5/1.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. leads the best of the longshots at 100/1.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America Roval 400 on Sunday. The Roval produced the wildest finish of 2018, when Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. collided before the finish line, which allowed Ryan Blaney to capture the checkered flag. Formerly a main-oval race at Charlotte, the race is now conducted over the infield road coarse and had that format for the first time in 2018.

Chase Elliott has been fairly quiet lately. He has four top fives in the last 15 races. However, Elliott has shown his talent on road courses in his career. He has dominated the last two races at Watkins Glen and has been hit or miss at Sonoma.

A year ago he was able to finish sixth in the Roval. The 8-1 price tag is fair for Elliot. In Elliot’s last seven road-course races, he’s produced three top fives, including two wins. He’s also led the second-most laps with 144, trailing race favorite Martin Truex Jr., who has 180 laps led over that same span. Elliott will be boom or bust Sunday, but the price is right.

Kyle Larson (+800)
Kyle Larson is winless so far this season. Can that change this Sunday? It’s possible when you consider what he was able to do a year ago at the Roval. Larson led 47 of the 109 laps before he was involved in a major wreck.

With little data to consider for this race, why not go to last year’s lap lead leader at 8-1? Larson has not been great in his career at road courses, and he has just one top-five finish in 13 tries, but he has three poles in his career at road courses. There is a good chance he qualifies well and runs up front all race long. Maybe he can get some better luck this year.

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton heads to the Singapore Grand Prix aiming for his first victory since returning from the summer break.

Max Verstappen is also tipped to do well in Singapore and 2019 championship leader Hamilton expects Red Bull to be a challenger this weekend. Last year the Briton beat Verstappen to the chequered flag.

Hamilton said: “When you come here each year, [the balance of performance] shifts between the Ferrari, the Red Bulls and us.

“The Red Bulls have particularly been quick over the years, so we anticipate they’re going to be strong this weekend, and again, I have no idea whether Ferrari will be quick, as they have been in the last two races.

“We’ll just focus on ourselves, trying to make sure we extract the most we can.

When: 6-8 September
Where: Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Race start time: 2.10pm on Sunday 8 September
TV channels: live on Sky Sports F1 and highlights on Channel 4

Ferrari come into their home race on the back of their first victory of the season last weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Leclerc’s superb drive at Spa was his maiden win in Formula 1 and he is excited to be racing at Monza in front of the Tifosi, Ferrari’s loyal fans.

“Last year, coming to Monza was probably one of the best experiences of my life,” said Leclerc. “The support I had, even though I was not a Ferrari driver, was unbelievable.

“So I can’t imagine now. Obviously, I just won my first race in Formula 1, so I’m pretty sure the welcome will be as great as it was last year but probably even more now, firstly driving for Ferrari and especially because I had my first win in Formula 1. So I’m really looking forward to arriving in Italy.”

Binotto seeks perfection
Mercedes have a 145-point lead over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship and Silver Arrows duo Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are No.1 and No.2 in the drivers’ standings.

World champion Hamilton will be aiming for his sixth career win in Italy.

Despite breaking their season duck at Spa last weekend Ferrari know that winning the Italian GP will be a tough challenge.

Team principal Mattia Binotto says the Scuderia must have a perfect weekend at Monza.

“The win in Spa is important for our fans, hopefully many will join us in Monza to support us,” he said. “We’ve seen that to win, we need to do everything perfect, from the quali, to the start, to the team management, to the drivers themselves, so nothing can be left.

“I expect that it will be very difficult in Monza so we will need to be perfect there, knowing that Mercedes may be competitive as well.”

Monza remains on calendar
The Italian Grand Prix will remain at Monza until 2024 at least after a deal was agreed between F1 and the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI).

2019 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix
What: race No.13 on the F1 2019 calendar
When: 30 August to 1 September
Where: Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot, Belgium
Race start time: 2.10pm on Sunday 1 September
TV coverage: live on Sky Sports F1 and highlights on Channel 4
The 2019 Formula 1 season resumes this weekend with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

front of the grid.

Last year at Spa Vettel won the race ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen and Ferrari will be hoping for a similar result on Sunday.

This weekend will also see Alexander Albon make his debut for Red Bull Racing. The 23-year-old was promoted during the summer break with Pierre Gasly demoted back to Toro Rosso.

Wolff: let’s keep on pushing
While Hamilton and Bottas are in the top two positions of the drivers’ standings Mercedes are also flying high at the top of the constructors’ championship.

Silver Arrows chief Toto Wolff has urged his team to keep on pushing in the second half of the season. He said: “We’re leading in both championships, but it doesn’t feel that way.

“In the last few years, we saw teams perform very strongly after summer shutdown, so we now we need to keep pushing.

“In that respect, we’re approaching the start to the second half of 2019 more like the start to a completely new season - once again we need to make sure that we leave no room for error and keep raising the bar.

“We’re very excited for the upcoming months with historic races like Belgium and Italy followed by the Singapore night race and many other fantastic events.

“The next stop takes us to Spa, one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar. Finding the right set-up is tricky because the track has a challenging mix of long straights, a wide range of corner speeds and also considerable elevation changes.

“The weather can also be somewhat unpredictable in the Ardennes which can make the sessions very interesting. We’re looking forward to the fight.

Consumption 17mpg (if you’re lucky)

Next weekend marks the 87th running of the world’s most famous 24-hour endurance race. Le Mans is a test of stamina for both the drivers and the cars, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of fans who flock to the French circuit for a long week (the track is actually open for testing from Wednesday) of drinking, camping, partying, live music and thrilling motor sport as cars touch speeds of over 200mph. Each year, the level of hype is matched only by the mighty roar of the highly tuned engines. At 2pm on Saturday, 60 teams will finally line up on the start grid. Will Toyota produce back-to-back wins? Will Porsche add to its record 17 overall victories? All eyes will also be on Ford and its fleet of GTs. The race is Ford’s last effort participating as a factory team and it plans on going out in style with a series of special ‘Celebration Liveries’ for its racing cars. Each of the four factory Fords will have a paint job inspired by the success of the manufacturer at Le Mans, both recently and in the 1960s. Perhaps the brand’s greatest win was in 1966, so particular focus will be on the #66 Ford GT raced by Stefan Mücke, Olivier Pla and Billy Johnson as it will sport the same colour scheme as the GT40 of Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon that won in 1966.

Hour 4:10: Daniel Serra moves past Earl Bamber, putting the #52 AF Corse Ferrari ahead of the #93 Porsche, on track for second in GTE-Am. Both are within about a second of the leading #63 Corvette.

Hour 4:05: We're well into the race now and we can see that Toyota's fastest in-race lap is a 3:17.2, while the fastest lap by a non-Toyota is a 3:19.7 from the SMP Racing #11 BR1 in fourth. The closeness of LMP1 qualifying was, fairly clearly, a mirage. This is more than just Toyota's race to lose; It's their race to not throw away.

Hour 3:51: Finally, the #26 G-Drive car goes into the LMP2 lead.

Eurosport is reporting a nose change for the #8 Toyota, running second, to adjust for a balance issue that was pushing the nose into the ground. The new front bodywork piece is producing less downforce, which they believe will fix the issue but compromise some of the car's balance.

Hour 3:49: The ARC Bratislava LMP2 car, #49, spins at Indianapolis and, somehow, decides the perfect place to do a three point turn is the straight between Indianapolis and Arnage. Somehow, that didn't end in disaster.

Hour 3:28: LMP2's battle for the lead is down to a second on track. Those two briefly swapped positions about twenty minutes ago, but, for the most part, the #36 Signatech Alpine has lead the #26 G-Drive Racing car all race long.

Both are Orecas masquerading as unique cars built by their sponsoring manufacturers.

Hour 3:15: GTE-Pro's top cars are all shuffled as some cars move onto slightly different strategies and others do early driver changes, but Corvette #93 still leads that class. It's AF Corse Ferrari #51 in second, Porsche #93 in third, and two Ford GTs, the #67 being run by the WEC team and the #68 being run by the IMSA team, round out the top five.

3:06: Eurosport's booth analyst segment is back and still includes a three-box cut where they show the confused faces of Kristensen and the host but not the on track racing itself. Said host has changed from a bird shirt to a patternless blue shirt, taking away the only good part of this segment.

Hour 2:58: The DragonSpeed LMP1 car may be in a bad place, but their LMP2 entry has just moved up to third on a pass with a little bit of side-t0-side contact. G-Drive Racing's #26 runs second in that class, still behind the Signatech Alpine, while Jackie Chan DC Racing (a program run by Jota Sport) run fourth and fifth. Those are very much the class's heavy hitters, so do not be surprised if the top five is some combination of those same cars in 21 hours.

Hour 2:42: Third full course yellow of the race, for both a no contact spin and debris from a punctured. It's the #69 Ford GT, one of the IMSA cars and the one wearing an iteration of Gulf blue in honor of the GT40 that won in both 1968 and 1969, doing the spinning this time, while the punctured tire came off an LMP2 car.

Hour 2:36: If you were wondering, the #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche still leads GTE-Am, while the #36 Signatech Alpine Oreca still leads LMP2. Those cars have been the class of the pro-am classes for most of the first two hours of this race, not a major surprise given that those teams are widely considered among the elite in their respective classes.

The #85 Keating Motorsports Ford GT, the first ever to be run by a private team, is now up to second in GTE-Am, about thirty seconds back of the class leader.

Hour 2:28: Rebellion #1 back on track. Only lost a lap with that particular issue, which was not specified on the Eurosport broadcast.

Hour 2:24: Rebellion #1 is in the garage now, but Bruno Senna is still in the car, so the issue may not be major. That's the third private LMP1 car to have an issue in the race, joining the ByKolles car and the Dragon-Speed run BR1.

Hour 2:14: Rebellion #1, the slower of the two, has spun on track, but resumes issue. That car was already well behind the leading LMP1 privateers, which are running third through fifth overall and all between half a lap and a full lap behind the Toyotas.

Hour 2:07: The most interesting thing on track is, as it has been for about an hour now, still the #93 Porsche chasing the #63 Corvette for the GTE-Pro lead. Patrick Pilet, in the Porsche has been within a car length of Jan Magnussen, in the Corvette, two or three times in that span, but still can't seem to put consistent pressure on that car.

Notably, both of those cars are full time IMSA entrants. Those North American cars lead a run of five full time World Endurance Championship entrants, and Ford, Porsche, Corvette, and Ferrari are the only four manufacturers represented in the top ten. The first BMW shows up in 11th, while the first Aston Martin is the pole sitting #95, which has now fallen all the way down to 13th.

Hour 2:00: Mercifully, it appears that Tom Kristensen has only been contracted to attempt to use a touchscreen once every two hours, so the next ten minutes of racing will actually be broadcast in both the U.S. and Europe.

Hour 1:51: The DragonSpeed LMP1 car, #10, is somehow getting penalized for a fuel allowance violation despite having been in the garage undergoing further repairs for its ominously-smoking-out-the-back problem for a few laps now. That is, of course, a short term efficiency penalty, rather than one for total use over the course of the race, though it would be deeply impressive if that car found a way to use 24 hours of fuel in 2.

Hour 1:40: Debris from the #88 Porsche has brought out a second full course yellow. That seems to be a headlight that's finally fallen off the car after the previous issue.

There's also some debris on track from Eddie Cheever III's #70 MR Racing Ferrari, which has just blown a tire. That GTE-AM car is unrelated to the Car Guy Racing Ferrari, despite both having names that sound like the nickname of some guy that likes auto racing.
