We're halfway through the Monster Mile doubleheader at Dover International Speedway. NASCAR's grand experiment of back-to-back Cup Series races concludes with a second straight Drydene 311 on Sunday.

 

Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag first in Saturday's Act I. A dream season for the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver now includes his first win in 29 career starts at one of his worst tracks on the circuit.

 

"I think my style of driving typically doesn't fit this type of racetrack," Hamlin said after the race. "I have to adapt more to my teammates' style when I come here."

 

Once again, this season, it was Hamlin putting that education to use in the closing moments with a little assist from crew chief Chris Gabehart. The right setup during a long green-flag run allowed Hamlin to run down, then blow by teammate Martin Truex Jr. in the final 10 laps to seal the victory. His sixth win of 2020 has him firmly established with Kevin Harvick as one of this season's championship favorites.

 

"We're rolling at tracks that we just are not typically great at," Hamlin said. "That gives me confidence. Chris just dials it in, really does a good job with the racecar."

 

His success came on a day the Monster Mile continued to be a muted version of its former self. A one-mile oval that once ate up racecars and spit them out had an early wreck involving Kurt Busch and Erik Jones. But after that? The rest of the day went caution-free except for the scheduled competition yellow on lap 25 along with two stage breaks.

 

Were drivers being less aggressive knowing they had to strap in and race tomorrow? It did seem the new short track package helped the racing at Dover a little bit. Passing still remains at a premium, though with drivers sliding all over the racetrack. The closing battle for the win provided some hope tomorrow will be better, although there's an asterisk attached. The lapped car of Aric Almirola provided a little assist for Hamlin to close the gap.

 

"I was fine with [Almirola] running where he wanted to run," said second-place finisher Martin Truex Jr. "Which was pinned on the white line on the bottom. I had a problem with every time I'd try to move up, he would drive up the racetrack in front of me.

 

"Not cool to do to the leader when second is catching him. I think that's kind of sh*tty, to be honest."

 

Besides the lead, Dover's other big early storyline is Jimmie Johnson moving his way back into the 16-driver postseason field. Johnson, who has a NASCAR-best 11 Dover victories, climbed over teammate William Byron with a solid, consistent seventh-place finish. Byron had himself a horrible day that included a shouting match on the radio with Johnson's former crew chief, Chad Knaus. A 28th-place finish now leaves him three points out with Jones just 22 behind.

 

Can Johnson put the bid out of reach by ending his victory drought in Sunday's race? A win there would leave Matt DiBenedetto vulnerable; he's just 27 ahead of Byron and sitting without a win himself. The plot thickens as just two races remain in NASCAR's regular season.

 

Add in a questionable weather forecast (thunderstorms on the horizon) and Sunday's event should be a mightier performance from a Monster Mile fighting to remain on the schedule in 2021.

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing

JGR had a 1-2-3 finish with Hamlin winning, Truex second and Kyle Busch third. They've earned seven top-3 finishes in the last three races, running 2-3 at Michigan International Speedway and the Daytona road course. Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott took the wins in those races, respectively but JGR wasn't far behind.

 

Who's at the Back: Kurt Busch

"Unbelievable." That was Busch's reaction on the radio when an errant tap from Erik Jones sent him spinning into the inside wall on the backstretch. Busch's race was over just six laps in, his first DNF since the season-opening Daytona 500. The 40th-place result was also his worst performance since the fall event at Kansas Speedway in October 2014.

 

Luckily, a winless Busch still retains a strong playoff cushion for Chip Ganassi Racing. He's 88 points ahead of Byron with two races left and should clinch a spot tomorrow as long as there's no back-to-back DNFs left on his resume.

 

News Briefs

 

Corey Lajoie will be leaving Go FAS Racing at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Lajoie confirmed the news Friday as rumors heated up the team will increase its alliance with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2021. Lajoie sits 29th in the point standings with just a single top-10 finish this year, an eighth in the Daytona 500 season opener.

 

Suspended NASCAR driver Kyle Larson gave his first interview to the Associated Press since the racial slur that caused his firing from Chip Ganassi Racing. Larson claimed, "I was just ignorant" while expressing his desire to work his way back into stock car racing. Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart has been among those interested in potentially hiring Larson.

 

Jimmie Johnson might run more 2021 races after all... in IndyCar. The seven-time NASCAR Cup champion is retiring from full-time stock car racing after 2020 but is increasingly turning his attention to open-wheel racing. With proper sponsorship, the 44-year-old said he'd like to run the full road course and street schedule next year for INDYCAR and didn't rule out an Indianapolis 500 appearance come 2022.

Top Tier

 

For the second set of Dover races, the top 20 finishers will be inverted. That means second-place runner Martin Truex Jr. will go from second to 19th on the grid. That's all the more reason to start him for daily fantasy position differential points.

 

Isn't it hard to believe Truex has just one win this season? I feel like that's an undercount for how the No. 19 team has performed. Truex's three career wins at Dover are the most for him at any Cup Series track and Saturday's speed shows he's in strong position to add a fourth.

 

How about third-place finisher Kyle Busch? Busch started 22nd, one of his worst qualifying efforts of the year after disaster in the Daytona road course race. But he found a way to work through traffic and ended the day with a top-5 result, learning important lessons he'll put to use Sunday when starting 18th. Again, position differential points make the difference in a doubleheader and KyBu has an outside shot to break his victory drought.

Middle Tier

 

I think you have to stick with Jimmie Johnson here, right? It's the final Dover start of his storied career and Johnson is desperate for that 12th career victory at the track to lock up a playoff bid. He was the fastest Chevrolet for most of the day, battling for that mantle with Chase Elliott, and appeared pretty speedy during the final stage. A 13th-place starting spot has him in better position than his main rivals tomorrow and the No. 48 team could use that track position to their advantage.

 

Clint Bowyer had one of his most consistent runs of the year with a sixth-place finish on Saturday. Suddenly, the No. 14 team is hitting on all eight cylinders and has three straight top-10 finishes with Bowyer at the Monster Mile. A much cheaper play than Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick should make him a much better fit for your roster.

 

Lower Tier

 

How about rookie Christopher Bell? At times, Bell showed speed with the No. 95 Toyota at a track where he's been victorious in NASCAR's Xfinity Series. But a 22nd-place result will leave him back in the pack for Sunday's race instead of starting up front with the top-20 inversion. In the end, that could lead to bonus points as Bell will benefit from a Saturday debrief with Toyota pseudo-teammates that ran 1-2-3.

 

Ryan Preece is another driver who will start out back (25th Saturday at Dover) yet have a better chance at Sunday improvement. JTG Daugherty Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had one of his better races of 2020, flexing his muscle in particular over long green-flag runs to finish 10th. An updated setup could help Preece's chances while providing those precious (yep, here it comes again) position differential points.

 

What Vegas Thinks

The odds have not been updated for Sunday's race at press time. However, Martin Truex Jr. (+350) was the favorite of most sports books before this doubleheader began and a second-place finish will do little to change that.

All three of NASCAR top divisions, along with the ARCA Menards Series East, will be in action at Dover International Speedway starting on Friday.

The race weekend features the Drydene doubleheader for both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series on Saturday and Sunday.

For the Cup Series, Dover will mark the third weekend doubleheader of the season following Pocono Raceway and Michigan International Speedway. Kevin Harvick won three of the four races on those two weekends with Denny Hamlin winning the second race at Pocono. This time around it might be a more difficult due to Dover being of the more physical racetracks on the schedule.

"It’s going to be a tough weekend running two races in one weekend," said Harvick, who will start 10th on Saturday. "To go there and run both of those events back to back will be something you’ll have to be prepared for. It’s one of my favorite racetracks just because you have to drive the car really hard every lap in order to make good lap times."

Dover: Lineups | Schedule

The rules package this weekend will be the same one that was at the four races held so far this season at tracks measuring 1.058 miles or less. Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski (4.0) and Joey Logano (7.5) have the top two average finishes in those races followed by Harvick (8.2).

"Going back with the low-downforce package this year is something I’m looking forward to," Harvick said. "It’ll be a lot of fun and the expectations will be high."

This weekend Harvick will be looking to clinch the regular season championship. He can accomplish that if he’s 121 points ahead of second following the Saturday’s Drydene 311 (MRN, 3 p.m. ET) or 61 points ahead of second in the standings following Sunday’s Drydene 311 (MRN, 3 p.m. ET).

With three races remaining in the regular season, a number of drivers are looking to make the 16-driver field based on points or with a win. Ten drivers are locked in via a win and 11-time Dover winner Jimmie Johnson is the first driver on the outside looking in. Johnson is currently 25 points behind teammate William Byron, who is on the bubble in 16th.

"We will be starting sixth Saturday at Dover, which is really an advantage to where we have been starting lately," Johnson said. "With the random draw and the way track position has been working out, I feel like we have had things stacked against us for a while. This will be a good advantage for us, and we just have to go out there and get it done."

Saturday and Sunday will start with the Xfinity Series Drydene 200. MRN’s live coverage will begin at 12 p.m. ET and 12:30 p.m. ET, respectively, each day.

Just like the Cup Series, this will mark the third time this season that the Xfinity Series will run back-to-back races at the same track on the same weekend following Homestead-Miami and Kentucky.

Points leader Austin Cindric swept the last doubleheader weekend at Kentucky.

"We’ve been using these doubleheaders as a way to try and learn something when we don’t have practice," said Brian Wilson, Cindric’s crew chief. "We’ll try to build off of our setup from last year for the first race, and then we’ll have a package ready to go for the second race to try to learn something to make our team better."

Justin Allgaier is in the Playoff picture, but has yet to score a win this season. Dover is one of Allgaier’s favorite tracks and he is the only driver to finish in the top five in the last five races there, including a win in 2018.

"Dover has been one of those places that is just so much fun for me," said Allgaier, who has combined to lead 195 laps in the last five Dover races. "I would say in my career that between Bristol and Dover, two very similar racetracks albeit completely different sizes have both been very kind to me."

The NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series will get the weekend started for NASCAR’s top three divisions on Friday with the running of the KDI Office Technology 200 (MRN, 4:30 p.m. ET).

With four races remaining in the regular season, five drivers are locked into the Playoffs on wins led by last week’s winner Sheldon Creed and Grant Enfinger each with two victories.

Johnny Sauter, who is currently 14th in the series standings, has won the last three races at Dover.

Motor Racing Network’s Dover coverage will kick off Friday at 2 p.m. ET with the ARCA Menards Series East General Tire 125.

The 2020 Indy 500 will take place on Sunday, August 23, after being initially postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 24. 

Initially, Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Roger Penske said he would not hold the event without fans. Due to health and safety reasons, fan attendance was reduced to 50%, then it was reduced to 25%, but eventually the decision was made to run it without fans due to coronavirus concerns.

This is Marco Andretti's 15th attempt at winning "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" sits on the front row for Sunday's event. In Sunday's qualifying run, Andretti took the pole from five-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, after a four-lap average of 231.068 mph. Takuma Sato rounds out row 1 for Sunday's race.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series will follow up last week’s race with the Drydene 200 on Saturday at Dover International Speedway. The race is set to be aired at 12:30 p.m. ET and will precede a second Drydene 200 set to run on Sunday. We’ll go over the betting favorites and how the starting grid will be determined for the first leg below.

NASCAR changed how the qualifying will be determined in the three national series (Cup, Xfinity, Gander Outdoors Truck) in early August. Three performance metrics will be utilized, with each one weighted a little different. It breaks down as follows.

Finishing position from the previous race (weighted 50%)

Ranking in team owner points standings (35%)

Fastest lap from the previous race (15%)

This system will be used for the remaining regular season races and the playoffs.

Austin Cindric is the the pole sitter and is looking to follow up last week’s win at Daytona. He and Chase Briscoe are favored at +225 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Those two are trailed by Justin Allgaier (+450) and Noah Gragson (+650), who both finished inside the top five at Daytona.

1. Brett Moffitt ($10,000) - Passing the leader in any of the three NASCAR series is comparable to walking into Mordor. One does not simply do it. Last year, there was one green flag pass for the lead at Dover and it was enabled by lap traffic. Moffitt was great at Dover last year, he’s been great recently, and he’s in the catbird seat.

2. Sheldon Creed ($9,100) - “I tear up a lot of [expletive].” Creed’s victory lane speech was sincere at Daytona. He is a checkers or wreckers driver. Last year at Dover, Creed led the second most laps, but pit road games forced him to restart in a precarious spot, and he wrecked.

3. Johnny Sauter ($10,600) - It’s Johnny Dover this weekend. He needs a win to make the playoffs, but the good news is that he’s won the last three races at Dover. He even overcame a failure to maintain speed penalty in his last win at Dover.

4. Carson Hocevar ($5,100) - If it wasn’t for the late race cautions, Hocevar was going to earn a top-10 in his 2020 Truck Series debut. He’s not a young phenom, but he has been solid in the ARCA series. The only reason a GMS truck should be priced this low is if you or Mark Smith are driving.

5. Sam Mayer ($5,600) - Last year, Mayer wrecked in two of his three races, but Bristol and Martinsville are challenging tracks. Mayer was contending for the win at Martinsville until the race turned into a wreck fest. He’s coming in hot this weekend, having won the last two oval races in the ARCA series.

6. Chandler Smith ($9,300) - This is the week to jump on the Chandler Smith bandwagon. At Kentucky he suffered damage in a rain shortened race and Michigan was a plate race. Dover fits his ARCA and Truck Series experience. The No. 51 KBM truck is a threat to win this weekend.

7. Austin Hill ($11,200) - Never has a driver been so dominant, and completely ignored. Other than a mechanical failure at Texas, Austin Hill has a top-5 driver rating in every race this season (11 races). His truck is fast and he knows how to drive it.

8. Matt Crafton ($10,300) - The cream has risen to the top, and the expected drivers have settled into the top 5 every week. Crafton is one of the obvious championship contenders. He’s finished 4th or better in five of the last six races.

9. Zane Smith ($8,500) - The rankings article before Michigan audaciously proclaimed that rookie Zane Smith is a favorite to win the championship. He proceeded to win at Michigan. Don’t expect it to be pretty or dominant. There will be asterisks, but there will be wins.

10. Bayley Currey ($6,900) - His name has been tarnished by driving poor equipment in the Xfinity series, but on occasion he overcomes his inferior equipment and shows his talent. This will be his 73rd NASCAR race, but only his 4th race in good equipment.

11. Derek Kraus ($8,000) - Despite his road course experience, Kraus struggled last week. Forget about it, he will, so DFS players should follow suit. The next Truck Series road race is a year away. At the ovals, the rookie is averaging an 11th place finish.

12. Ben Rhodes ($8,700) - In ten non-plate races, Rhodes has ten top-10s. The problem is that he’s averaging 37 points per race. That’s not going to win anyone $10,000. He has topped 50 points twice, and that’s what he’ll need to do Friday night, but that will require a 2nd place finish.

13. Christian Eckes ($9,700) - Rudy Fugle’s worst weekend ever was last year at Dover. There were gremlins in the truck and they could not get the setup correct. That could be worrisome for Eckes, but those gremlins could be the product of Brandon Jones driving the truck last year.

14. Ty Majeski ($7,500) - Although he finished 32nd last weekend, he has the 15th-best driver rating. Majeski is a 10th to 15th place driver every week and a great value play this weekend. He’ll go under owned because there are even better value plays at Dover.

15. Todd Gilliland ($8,900) - The super secret stats favor Todd Gilliland. DraftKings would say that pit road is the race within the race, and Gilliland is winning that race. He’s tied for the best time on pit road and has the most top 10 pit stops this season.

16. Timmy Hill ($6,400) - This is a risky play and strictly a contrarian play. If DFS players choose to avoid the chalk, then Hill can work. First, the obvious value plays need to fail, then Hill needs to safely guide his truck to 20th. That’s asking a lot from his small team Truck, but it’s not asking a lot from a talented driver that understands the mission.

17. Grant Enfinger ($8,400) - Unless Enfinger has a bad week, he’ll always start inside the top 10. Unless he wins, which has been very rare in his career, then he doesn’t work in DFS. Enfinger has been able to fit when he’s priced below $8,000.

18. J.J. Yeley ($5,500) - File this one under the category “too cute.” There are several obvious value options on the board and those drivers will soak up a ton of ownership. Yeley is the dangerous pivot. The play works like this - Yeley safely turns lap and misfortune strikes the obvious plays. Sounds crazy, but the obvious plays are inexperienced rookies, so the Yeley pivot is not insane.

19. Dawson Cram ($6,500) - It’s clear cut this week. There are good plays and bad plays. Some drivers just don’t work, and that allows Cram to slide into the rankings. He’s a decent young driver in weak equipment, but he’s starting dead last. Dover is called the Monster Mile for a reason. This wreck can be filled with carnage, and taking the punt starting dead last is on the table.

20. Spencer Davis ($7,400) - He’s earned four top-15 finishes this season. He’s not the greatest driver and he’s not in the greatest truck, but sometimes things go his way. If there is a late race caution, and Davis lines up on the outside, he could bust into the optimal lineup.

Long before the 2020 GoBowling 235, from 1949-58, NASCAR's early foundation was built with its yearly race on the sands of Daytona Beach. Some of the sport's early greats, like Hall of Famers Tim Flock, Cotton Owens and Lee Petty, were winners on the 4.1-mile road course that helped spark the growth of stock car racing throughout the southeast.

 

With the construction of Daytona International Speedway in 1959, those beach races came to a close. For 61 years, no NASCAR driver has made a right turn at speed on the 2.5-mile superspeedway that became the home of the sport's Great American Race.

 

Until now.

 

Sunday's stock car debut on the 14-turn, 3.61-mile DIS road course has become one of the year's most anticipated events. Added to the schedule when Watkins Glen International couldn't host its race due to COVID-19 restrictions, a successful Sunday might put it on the schedule for years to come.

 

Unlike the Charlotte ROVAL, this DIS road course has plenty of races under its belt through the years... from sports cars. The Rolex 24 at Daytona is held here annually, one of the world's top endurance prizes that has occasionally attracted a few stock car veterans for a one-off appearance.

 

But the vast majority of Sunday's field will have never turned a lap on this road course. They'll have seen it on TV, on the driving simulator... and that's about it. Add in no practice or qualifying under NASCAR's limited COVID-19 track time and you get a race that could produce plenty of unexpected surprises.

 

"I don't know if any of us are going to feel like we're ready to race," Bubba Wallace said this week. "So, it's going to be exciting for sure."

 

"I think the fun factor this weekend has got everybody's anxiety level up," Kurt Busch added about Sunday's event. "But also the challenge that's right in front of us because it's basically a wild-card style race. You could see a driver and a team that don't normally make the playoffs punch their ticket."

 

Among those might be two surprising winless drivers in 2020: Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson. Both have experience on this course with the Rolex 24; Johnson has two runner-up finishes, the last of which came in 2008. Could the wily veterans use that experience to charge up through the field early? In a 65-lap race, there won't be much time to figure this road course out.

 

Wallace thinks it's going to all add up to an incredible experience.

 

"It's crazy how, just from watching the 24 Hours, you kind of learn which way this kind of track goes," he said. "Obviously, turning left immediately after the start/finish line, going through the infield there. And then you kind of visualize, like man, I used to park here in the road course parking lot. So, it's going to be cool to kind of be racing all around that."

 

The question is whether they all can survive it without this race turning into a Demolition Derby. There's been a lot of talk about how stock car drivers have improved dramatically on road courses in recent years.

 

We're about to find out just how good they've become. It's a historic moment in a historic year at the birthplace of NASCAR racing.

Who's at the Front: Kevin Harvick

Harvick pulled off a weekend sweep at Michigan International Speedway, besting rival title contenders Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin in back-to-back days. In doing so, he became the first driver to win two consecutive Cup races in two days since Richard Petty in July 1971.

 

Harvick, at age 44, is rewriting NASCAR history at his age. The Stewart-Haas Racing veteran is on pace for his sixth Championship 4 appearance in the past seven seasons and has a sizzling average finish of 5.9 in 22 starts.

 

Who's at the Back: Alex Bowman

Bowman's tire issues at Michigan were the latest slip-up in a summer that's seen him headed south in the standings. The winner at Auto Club Speedway in March hasn't had a top-5 finish since the fifth race of the season, NASCAR's first race back from COVID-19 quarantine at Darlington Raceway. Bowman's tumbled from second to 11th in the standings, eighth of 10 drivers who have a win this season.

 

Is it testing for the playoffs? Did the two-month layoff interrupt the rhythm of this group? Whatever the reason, Bowman's headed for a first-round playoff exit unless the No. 88 Chevrolet team can reclaim their mojo.

Sponsors keep dashing Bubba Wallace's way. DoorDash has signed a seven-race deal to be the primary sponsor of the No. 43 Chevrolet beginning with this weekend's race at Daytona. Add in the Cash App (five races) and one of the sport's most popular drivers has added sponsorship for one-third of the Cup schedule in just the last few weeks.

 

Former NASCAR driver Justin Marks is launching a new Cup Series team in 2021. Marks, who sources say was a bidder for Leavine Family Racing's No. 95 charter, is actively searching for one next season while building up financing for a race team he's calling "Trackhouse." Marks, who told Sports Business Daily he already has a "nationwide family entertainment business" signed as a primary sponsor, will use investment capital to fund 50 percent of the team's budget in year one.

 

A fond farewell this weekend to Myrtle Beach Speedway, holding its final stock car race this weekend in South Carolina. The .538-mile racetrack, around for 62 years, has been dealing with struggling attendance for years after losing its NASCAR Xfinity Series event after the 2000 season. The speedway also hosted Cup races from 1958-65: Hall of Famers David Pearson and Ned Jarrett were among the winners there.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

 

Top Tier

 

There’s no past history on Daytona to go on, making this race one of the most unpredictable in daily fantasy. But when it comes to road courses, two drivers have stood out the past two seasons: Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. They've combined to win five of the past six road course races and would have won all six if Truex wasn't turned by Jimmie Johnson in the final lap of 2018’s Charlotte ROVAL debut.

 

My advice would be to play the hot hand while being realistic on Daytona's unpredictability. Chances are, with no practice or qualifying, a few crashes are all it could take for either of these wheelmen to become an innocent victim. I'd pick one and then save some cash to stash a few other B-level drivers on your roster.

Middle Tier

 

Veterans like Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson, with their Rolex 24 experience, could wind up valuable picks in daily fantasy formats. They're also less likely to turn their race cars into smoldering piles of sheet metal as decades of road course experience could accelerate their learning curves.

 

Remember, Johnson was just one turn (and position) away from ending his long winless streak in 2018. And Busch has a road course victory of his own, at Sonoma Raceway back in 2011.

 

Lower Tier

 

You might want to take a flyer on another driver with Daytona road course experience: Brendan Gaughan. Starting shotgun on the field in the No. 62 Beard Motorsports ride, Gaughan has nothing to lose and could be a benefactor if half the field struggles to finish the race. The position differential points for, say, a 15th-place finish, could make the difference on your fantasy roster.

 

Michael McDowell has become a popular pick in this space each week and Daytona's road course is no different. Hate to recommend the same guy two weeks in a row but McDowell was 12th at the Charlotte ROVAL race last fall and has a history of solid, survival-type top-20 road course finishes. He'll fill out a roster nicely.

 

What Vegas Thinks

As you might expect based on their recent history, Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. lead the odds for Sunday's race. Elliott sits at 7/2 while Truex is at 5/1 according to vegasinsider.com.

 

If you want to take a longshot? Now’s the time. Bubba Wallace at 200/1 and Michael McDowell at 250/1 might be worth throwing $5 on "just to see what happens.

Like Graf Jr., Donahue will make his Xfinity Series debut as crew chief on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course.
