Because of rain on Saturday, we're projected to have the first ever NASCAR one-day triple header on Sunday at Pocono Raceway. A full day of racing will begin with the rescheduled Truck Series race, followed by the Xfinity Series Pocono Green 225, and then a Cup race.

And speaking of that Xfinity race, let's talk about it. 36 drivers will take the green flag, with Noah Gragson leading them off and Myatt Snider starting second. Yes, that means we're fading the 21 car for the first time all year because of the starting spot (and because I like this car more when Anthony Alfredo is piloting it.)

Sunday's GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway marks the first superspeedway race for the NASCAR Cup Series since February’s season-opening Daytona 500. So much has happened since then in this sport: a two-month suspension due to COVID-19, Kyle Larson's firing for a racial slur, and a confederate flag ban in response to the #BlackLivesMatter movement.



It's easy to forget, four months ago, how different this NASCAR season could have been. How a minor miracle kept Ryan Newman from tragedy in the final few seconds of the Great American Race. Take a moment with me and relive what had everyone holding their breath.







Newman was knocked out in the crash and had to be cut out of the car. Rushed to the hospital, he suffered a bruised brain and sat out the next three races before the COVID-19 pandemic gave him a chance to heal.



Before Corey Lajoie got busy feuding with Denny Hamlin, he was living a nightmare as the driver who slammed into Newman's driver-side door. Before Ryan Blaney was leading NASCAR's #BlackLivesMatter support, he was living the nightmare of one ill-fated tap that could have devastated a driver's life.



It was an ugly 48 hours for the sport, one they hope never to repeat. But that's difficult to assure at their two biggest tracks, Daytona and Talladega, where pack racing can produce disaster at any moment. Forty cars superglued together, running two and three abreast at speeds approaching 200 miles an hour? It's hard to go 500 miles without a mistake.



That said, NASCAR hopes to learn from Newman's lucky break, arguably the scariest Cup wreck since Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s fatal wreck in 2001. Autoweek's Matt Weaver has an excellent article detailing the safety changes put in place designed to make Talladega safer this Sunday.

The cliff notes are the adjustments, such as the elimination of aero ducts and reduction of throttle body size, should reduce horsepower down to 500. The addition of slip tape should make it harder for cars to spin out after the dangerous bump drafts that have become so popular in recent years. Less horsepower means slower speeds, putting the cars under a mythical 200 mph barrier NASCAR feels like significantly increases the chance a wrecked car will leave the ground and start flipping.



But those safety enhancements are still a mystery with not a single team able to test them. NASCAR chose not to have even a 15-minute session at Talladega, continuing their COVID-19 policy of limiting time at the racetrack. It means the first lap drivers will deal with this new package will be under race conditions, at speed, with 39 others jostling around them.



It's just another risk for a sport that's always on the ragged edge with this type of racing. If they make the setup too safe, single-file racing ensues while both fans and drivers bore of what becomes a 500-mile parade with a crazy-turned-catastrophic ending. But if they get too aggressive? Drivers are human, after all, and get forced to make moves from the very first lap which ultimately put the entire field at risk.



"Drivers have short-term memory problems," Cup driver Brendan Gaughan said Thursday. "When it's bad, we forget, and when it's great, we remember. I know that I've never felt invincible in my life in a race car. I've also never raced with the words 'no fear' and I've known a few drivers that did.



"We have healthy fears... you need to use knowledge and intelligence to do some of these things."



We're about to see where this field of 40 drivers falls on the spectrum. Typically, we see a much cleaner superspeedway race the first time drivers return after this type of serious scare. But the outside events of the world make that crash feel like a decade ago... not just four months. Will the lure of competition and the unknowns of a brand new package leave us with a pile of smoldering sheet metal once again?



"When the checkered flag is out for the Daytona 500," NASCAR senior vice president of innovation and racing development John Patalak said, "The opportunity for accidents is high. I think the changes you see here that we've put forward, it's to ensure that once a chain of events like that is set into motion, we have all the safety mechanisms in place to mitigate the... negative outcomes."

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing
Denny Hamlin became Cup's first three-time winner this season, chasing down and passing Chase Elliott in the closing laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway. This year's Daytona 500 winner could easily add to that total in another superspeedway place this weekend.



But he's not alone. Martin Truex Jr. broke into the win column a few days earlier at Martinsville Speedway. Kyle Busch, while winless in Cup, won the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Homestead and has picked up the pace with three top-six finishes the last four races.



Overall, JGR has four wins as a team despite Busch's underperformance and a poor season thus far by Erik Jones. Well, that's still tied for the lead among NASCAR ownership with Team Penske (four). So if JGR's just starting to get its act together as a whole? Watch out.



Who's at the Back: Alex Bowman
Bowman finds himself safely in the postseason after a March win at Auto Club Speedway. He's also the recipient of a contract extension at Hendrick Motorsports through 2021. But that early excitement, peaking with a second-place finish at Darlington Raceway in May, has faded with the start of summer.




Homestead marked just an 18th-place finish and zero laps led for a driver who appeared to have intermediates figured out. It's his fourth run outside the top 10 in the last five races, a stretch that includes a crash at Bristol Motor Speedway and a 31st at Charlotte Motor Speedway after starting on the outside of the front row.

Australian open-wheel racer James Davison will have to wait until Pocono Raceway next weekend to make his Cup Series debut. Davison was replaced by B.J. McLeod in the Spire Motorsports No. 77 Chevrolet after NASCAR did an about-face on his approval to race. There were concerns about the Indianapolis 500 veteran jumping in with this new package without any practice inside the draft.



Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mike Stefanik and Red Farmer were announced as the three inductees for the 2021 NASCAR Hall of Fame this week. Earnhardt, the sport's perennial Most Popular Driver before retiring in 2017, is a two-time Daytona 500 winner and current NBC analyst. Stefanik was a seven-time champ in the sport's Whelen Modified Tour. And Farmer racked up hundreds of short track wins as one of the original members of the sport's legendary Alabama Gang. Former R.J. Reynolds executive Ralph Seagraves was selected for the Landmark Award. Seagrave's efforts helped bring Winston to NASCAR as the sport's Cup Series sponsor from 1971-2003.



Best wishes to 1999 Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett who tested positive for coronavirus. The current NBC analyst, 63, made the announcement during the network's Hall of Fame coverage Tuesday. Jarrett, thankfully, is self-quarantining after experiencing only minor symptoms.

Top Tier


Put 40 balls in a bingo cage, turn the handle and see what numbers come out. That's pretty much the strategy at Talladega, where the rules create parity to the point a title contender everywhere else can be shuffled back to 35th at a moment's notice.



That said, Brad Keselowski has a history of success at 'Dega. His five wins lead all active drivers and Keselowski is due for a run of good luck here; he's got four straight results of 13th or worse.



Chase Elliott is the defending Talladega winner and has two straight top-10 finishes here. He'll be a popular pick and his recent run of momentum everywhere makes it hard to pick against him. But three straight top 10s? Or a second win in three races? That would be a minor miracle with danger lurking at every turn.

Middle Tier


Back in 2017, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. looked ready to on a superspeedway streak of sorts. A win at Talladega sparked a summer triumph at Daytona as he looked to replace a retiring Dale Earnhardt Jr. as the sport's top racer at this type of track. That hasn't happened. But three top-10 finishes in the last five 'Dega races could make him a good value play.



Ryan Newman? Really? Yes, really. Remember, the Roush Fenway Racing veteran came two turns from Daytona 500 glory before that awful wreck turned his 2020 season upside down. He was seventh and second at 'Dega last year and has an unheard of four top-10 finishes in the last five races here.



Lower Tier


Ah, the value of these small-team picks. It's one of the few times all year underfunded and overmatched teams can sneak away with top-10 finishes. Brendan Gaughan is a rather obvious selection, making his second start of the year for Beard Motorsports. Retiring after the 2020 season, he was seventh in the Daytona 500 for a team that focuses exclusively on superspeedways. Just beware; Gaughan is aggressive. He's not running for points so a boom-or-bust proposition is likely here.



Corey Lajoie has been feuding with Hamlin, a beef that appears to be settled entering ‘Dega. But the underdog has a rare opportunity to up a 2020 three-time winner at a place he's been 11th and seventh in his last two starts.



What Vegas Thinks
Chase Elliott has the edge with 8/1 odds at Talladega. Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano are right behind at 9/1. Denny Hamlin sits fourth at 10/1 in the latest numbers posted at vegasinsider.com.



Corey Lajoie is one heck of a longshot, sitting at 1000/1. But Talladega has gifted plenty of Cup drivers their first wins before. It's not an insane proposition.

What's old is new again at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500. Almost three months after the sport was originally here, NASCAR's COVID-19 quarantine will be lifted for the 1.54-mile oval's only Cup Series race of 2020.



The pavement at AMS is some of the oldest on the circuit; it hasn't been touched since a 1997 reconfiguration of the track into a quad-oval. Typically, as a normal driver on the highway you'd be frustrated over all the bumps and rough riding from aging asphalt.



But for NASCAR's 550 horsepower package? An intermediate setup that has made passing anywhere from difficult to impossible at races like Charlotte Motor Speedway a few weeks ago? These extra obstacles are a godsend. Tire conservation and driver talent are front and center here for a track that eats your Goodyears up and spits them out.



So much for two-tire stops halfway through a green-flag run. So much for times so close together with this package, drivers simply run in place for 15, 20, 25 laps at a time. No, at AMS you see a refreshing back-and-forth of drivers fighting for position. Multiple grooves allow for plenty of side-by-side action; find the right one to unlock maximum speed.

Tire conservation tends to favor veterans so it's no surprise 10 of the last 11 races here have been won by Cup Series champions. (Lone exception: Kasey Kahne in 2014). Expect the cream to rise to the top once again in a sport that's seen multi-car giants Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing win each of the sport's first nine races.

Who's at the Front: Kyle Busch
No, he didn't win Sunday's race at Bristol Motor Speedway. That went to Brad Keselowski, a second gift in three weeks after Chase Elliott and Joey Logano made contact in the final three laps.



But Bristol marked an important step forward for the reigning Cup Series champion. Busch led his first laps in Cup since the 2019 Daytona 500 (100 circuits) and easily had his most competitive run of 2020. It's a moment that could jumpstart a sleeping giant in the No. 18 team that has watched teammate Denny Hamlin run circles around them in recent weeks.



Who's at the Back: Ty Dillon
First off, kudos to Dillon who led an engaging discussion with Bubba Wallace this week on Instagram live about racial injustice in the country. He's been one of the leaders within NASCAR's push to take a proactive stance on the issue. Well done.



Sadly, Dillon's on-track exploits have been far less impressive. He crashed out to 39th at Bristol, part of a three-race stretch where he's run no better than 25th. Nine races in, he's dipped to 27th in the season standings and seems a longshot, at best, to make a playoff run with single-car Germain Racing.



Retirement rumors dogged Ty Dillon for much of 2019, repeatedly denied, and ultimately untrue. But as Richard Childress' grandson slogs through a disappointing fourth Cup season, it's fair to start wondering about his future once again.

Nashville Superspeedway will reopen next season for the first time in nearly a decade. The track's reward? A 2021 Cup Series date. The 1.33-mile superspeedway, located 35 miles east-southeast of Music City, last hosted a NASCAR Xfinity Series race in 2011. The reopening will coincide with their first-ever Cup Series event, a date stripped from track owner Dover Motorsports, Inc.'s main facility: the Monster Mile out in Delaware.



NASCAR is dipping its toe in the water with fans returning to the racetrack. Next weekend's race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida will allow 500 military personnel into the facility as spectators. No tickets will be sold to the general public, however, with strict rules against tailgating and bringing coolers into HMS.



The sport has also finalized its racing schedule through early August. On the list are two more midweek experiments as the sport plays around in advance of 2021. Charlotte Motor Speedway will host the NASCAR All-Star Race on Wednesday night, July 15; eight days later, Kansas Speedway will host a Thursday night, points-paying race to make up for their May postponement. That event will cap off a streak of 15 NASCAR Cup Series races in two months before a nine-day summer layoff.

If Martin Truex Jr. is going to have a breakthrough with new crew chief James Small, Atlanta's a good place to start. The duo's sluggish beginning to 2020 could turn the corner with Truex's great AMS track history: runs of 6th, 7th, 8th, 5th, and 2nd in his last five starts. The No. 19 Toyota team needs a boost after a mix of bad luck and poor performance in the first nine races; Truex's price makes him an intriguing play.



Eleventh (11th). That's Kevin Harvick's worst finish in the first nine races of 2020. It's hard not to keep riding the hot hand heading to a track where he's led a whopping 960 laps in his last six AMS starts. That includes a win (2018) and five straight top-10 results. Don't bet against a guy who picked up his first career Cup win here back in 2001.

Middle Tier


At some point, Clint Bowyer's luck has to turn. A disappointing roller-coaster 2020 seemed to correct itself with last week's runner-up finish at Bristol. Now, we head to Atlanta, a place where Bowyer's No. 14 Ford has ticked off two straight top-five results. Bowyer has run much better than his results have shown this season and is likely worth the price to pick up here.



Ryan Newman wasn't allowed to qualify as NASCAR's COVID-19 rules call for a random draw. But he had six straight top-15 starts at this oval, a track where he's yet to win in his career. Can he build upon last year's 13th-place run in what was just his second race with Roush Fenway Racing?



Lower Tier


Atlanta's a track that leans toward experience. That said... some of the Cup rookies could be dark horses for top-10 finishes at a bargain price.



Christopher Bell has won here in the sport's Xfinity Series and has cleaned up his act with Leavine Family Racing (two top-10 finishes in his last three Cup starts). John Hunter Nemechek was within striking distance of Front Row Motorports' first-ever top-10 finish on an intermediate track at Charlotte a few weeks back. And Tyler Reddick has been fast just about everywhere Cup has been this season.



What Vegas Thinks
Kevin Harvick leads the way with 5/1 odds at Atlanta (per vegasinsider.com). But pole-sitter Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch sit close behind at 13/2. Alex Bowman, who has already won once at these 1.5-mile ovals this season, is fourth at 8/1.

Kyle Busch enters the NASCAR Cup Series 2020 Food City 500 (renamed the Food City presents the Supermarket Heroes 500 for this year) as the defending race winner. He's the reigning Cup Series champion and has four top-five finishes this season (only Kevin Harvick has more). He's already won twice in the sport's Xfinity and Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.



But a closer look reveals all is not well with one of NASCAR's best-known superstars. Bristol presents a chance to reset a trying season at one of his best tracks.



Since the sport's return from COVID-19 quarantine, Busch's big moment has doubled as one of his career's biggest mistakes. In the closing laps of the May 20 Darlington Cup race, he swerved up the frontstretch thinking he was clear. Instead, Busch tapped the back of Chase Elliott's No. 9 Chevrolet in their battle for second place. Elliott spun out, hitting the inside wall hard while handing the race to Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin.



A post-race confrontation with Elliott's crew chief (and former Busch head wrench) Alan Gustafson ensued. Busch, admitting his mistake, understands it could come back to bite him if both drivers compete for the championship this fall.



"They're upset, they're mad," Busch said at the time. "I'm not just going to fix it and we'll have ice cream tomorrow. Obviously, they're going to have to dwell on it and there are repercussions of it I'm sure I'm going to have later down the road."



That runner-up finish was followed by a fourth in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. But Busch failed to lead a lap in that race; in fact, he hasn't led in Cup since the season-opening Daytona 500. Busch has no stage wins and sits a disappointing 12th in points despite those four top-five finishes.

In the Truck Series, Harvick put up $50,000 for COVID-19 relief (an amount matched by Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis) for anyone who could beat Busch. Elliott did Tuesday, bowing to the empty stands in a subtle jab at his rival. It was the first loss for Busch in that series in two years.



Then, there was Thursday night's mishap, a four-wide battle gone bad for Busch that cut his tire after contact with Aric Almirola. Spiraling out of contention, he came home 29th before throwing shade on Twitter.



"When surrounded by squirrels," Busch said, "You're bound to get hit by a nut."



Will he bounce back emotionally and get back in the game for Bristol? It's a track that requires total focus; a one-second bobble is all you need to cause trouble. Busch should know; August 2018 contact with now-teammate Martin Truex Jr. wrecked the No. 78 and cost him a potential win.



The good news is short tracks are a great equalizer on the NASCAR circuit. Tracks that rely on handling and driver talent will help Toyota teams who, Hamlin aside, have struggled to find front-running speed. JGR won five of the six short track races last year split among Hamlin, Busch and Truex Jr.



One could easily see Busch bouncing back into Victory Lane and quieting the critics. But a volatile Busch also gives us a wide variety of outcomes. Five straight Championship 4 appearances have forever raised expectations for this future Hall of Famer.



Can he get back to meeting them?

Who's at the Front: Chase Elliott
Elliott finally cashed in after two straight near misses on the Cup level. He followed up a thrilling Truck race win Tuesday night by leading the final 28 laps in Thursday's sprint race, cruising to victory without a late-race caution mishap at Charlotte Motor Speedway.



The 2.2-second win was a huge boost of confidence for Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports. HMS has been arguably the fastest team all season, leading a NASCAR-high 692 laps, but Thursday was just their second win in eight races.



Who's at the Back: Matt Kenseth
The 48-year-old NASCAR veteran surprised some with a top-10 finish at Darlington two weeks ago. It was his first race since November 2018, driving for a new team in Chip Ganassi Racing's No. 42 that had no practice or qualifying to even meet Kyle Larson's replacement.

Former NASCAR Cup Series driver David Ragan will come out of semi-retirement next weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Ragan, who left his full-time Cup ride at the end of 2019, will drive the team's No. 17 Ford with sponsorship from Select Blinds.



Pocono Raceway will remain on the NASCAR schedule at the end of June. The 2.5-mile, triangular-shaped oval will run its 2020 Cup Series races without fans. Pocono was already scheduled to host the sport's first doubleheader, holding a 300- and then a 350-mile race during the weekend of June 27-28.




Midweek NASCAR Cup Series TV ratings have struggled a bit. Thursday night's Charlotte race scored just a 0.91 rating and 1.5 million viewers. While rain-delayed, it's a 25 percent decline from Darlington Raceway's 1.2 the week before and well below the sport's average. NASCAR's return from COVID-19 at Darlington, by comparison, earned a 3.7 Nielsen rating on May 17.

Top Tier


Kyle Busch may be the man to beat in the end at Bristol. But teammate Denny Hamlin should give him a run for his money down the stretch. Hamlin has two career wins here, including the August night race last year where he led 79 laps and stamped out a Cinderella bid by Matt DiBenedetto with a late surge.



Ryan Blaney should have won at this track already, leading 379 laps in the last four races at Bristol. Indeed, he was taken out in the spring 2018 race here in a crash not of his making while leading the race. But since then, Blaney's got three straight top-10 finishes and starts Sunday's event from the outside of the second row.

Middle Tier


Clint Bowyer has failed to cash in with a fast car these past two weeks. But Bristol is typically a place he rights the ship. Bowyer has four straight top-10 finishes at Thunder Valley, leading 144 laps and in contention to win late in August 2018 before a poor restart.



Ryan Newman is trying to collect all the points he can after missing three straight races earlier in the season after his Daytona 500 wreck. Bristol should help him do that, so let him help your fantasy roster. He's got six straight top-15 finishes here and was ninth and 11th in the two races held last year.



Lower Tier


Everyone's going to pile into the boat of Matt DiBenedetto. Last year's second-place finisher in the August night race is the underdog most want to root for.



So be different. That's how you win in fantasy. How about Matt Kenseth? He'll be cheap after three straight wrecks but the Bristol track record is outstanding: four wins and 15 top-five finishes, including the last two races he ran here in 2017. The No. 42 Chevrolet was also top 10 at Bristol last year.



And Ty Dillon, who won a stage here in 2019, has a chance to earn you place differential points. He starts 29th and is a good bet to improve after finishes of 15th and 20th last season and a career average finish of 22.9.

Memorial Day weekend has always been bookmarked for racing. It's a Sunday trifecta that starts with the Grand Prix of Monaco (Formula One), jumps to the Indianapolis 500, open-wheel racing's American Super Bowl, and ends with NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It's every motorsports fan's wildest dream.



But COVID-19? It's an expert these days at smashing your dreams to pieces.



As this international pandemic continues, then, we'll all have to be content with the one race out of those three still scheduled to run Sunday: the Coca-Cola 600. Now, expectations are higher for NASCAR's longest race on the schedule, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2020. Its presence will have to pacify millions of INDYCAR fans as a consolation prize, brokenhearted their biggest race won't run for the first time since 1945. At least a makeup date is scheduled for August; the streets of Monaco won't light up again until May 2021 for F1.



Back in Charlotte, NASCAR's crown jewel of the Queen City also serves an important purpose; hometown bragging rights. Almost all race shops and Cup Series teams are located in this part of North Carolina, home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame since 2010. Daytona may be the birthplace of stock car racing but Charlotte is where it grew up into a Big Boy sport.



Its 600-mile marathon remains the ultimate trial for man and machine, an endurance test which takes over four hours to complete. It's no surprise, then the track lends itself to veterans, although the list of first-time winners reveals a Dean's list of current and future Hall of Famers. Series champions David Pearson, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte and Matt Kenseth are just a few of those who've earned their maiden victory here.

Until recently, clean air reigned at this cookie-cutter oval which suffered under the past decade of NASCAR aerodynamic evolution. A "levigation" experiment in the mid-2000s went awry and in the past few years, both Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch have put fans to sleep with dominant performances. (In 2016, Truex led a record 392 of 400 laps.) Competition sagged so much on the oval NASCAR turned its second date into an infield road course, creating the wildly popular ROVAL in 2018.



But a funny thing happened with NASCAR's new 550 horsepower package last season: it sparked a Charlotte comeback. Truex earned his second 600 win but only after fighting through a wild, competitive race that featured 16 cautions, the most at this track in 14 years. The race's 30 lead changes were the most since 2014 as the leader's clean air advantage was kept in check (at least during a short run).



Expect another barnburner of a race on Sunday. Truex, in particular, is in need of a boost; he's without a top-five finish in six 2020 starts. Teammate Kyle Busch is motivated after a Wednesday night mistake wrecked Chase Elliott, led to a middle-finger salute and caused an awkward apology on national television. Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who flashed some speed since NASCAR's COVID-19 return, could be angling for one last victory at a racetrack they once called "Jimmie's house" due to his dominance here.



But this race, especially during the unpredictability of this pandemic, could tilt back toward NASCAR's future talent. William Byron, still winless on the Cup level, is driving the same No. 24 Chevrolet Jeff Gordon broke through with in a teary-eyed Victory Lane in 1994. Matt DiBenedetto has worked wonders with the Wood Brothers this season, one of NASCAR's legendary teams sitting one win short of 100. And even rookie Tyler Reddick, last year's Charlotte oval winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, could stand a chance as the ultimate dark horse.



Underdogs and favorites alike will pause during this race Sunday in a special memorial salute to our nation's veterans. I'm sure a tribute to the heroes fighting on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis will be on the agenda, too.



NASCAR's hope is that the race itself proves just as memorable. Carrying the weight of all motorsports this Memorial Day weekend will prove no easy task as the world continues to grapple with the emotional fallout from this pandemic.

Who's at the Front: Denny Hamlin
Hamlin earned the win in Wednesday night's Darlington sprint race when Mother Nature cut him a break. Staying out on old tires, the No. 11 Toyota seemed no match for a long list of contenders behind him on fresh rubber. However, that Elliott-Busch wreck on a restart, combined with a raging downpour, turned the tables his way as the race ended 20 laps early with him out front.



It was the driver's third victory at The Track He Has No Problems Taming. Hamlin's average finish of 7.2 at Darlington trumps Hall of Famers Dale Earnhardt (11.4) and David Pearson (12.0). That duo combined for 19 victories between them at this egg-shaped oval, putting Hamlin in pretty exclusive company.



Who's at the Back: Ryan Preece
Wednesday, we featured JTG Daugherty Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in this space. But it's Preece, Wednesday's pole-sitter, who finished dead last this time, hitting the wall and then blowing an engine in his No. 37 Chevrolet. That's his third DNF in just six starts this season, leading to a red-faced Twitter rant about a growing sophomore slump.



Near the bottom (32nd) in the point standings, Preece is already 81 points behind William Byron for the final playoff spot. He’s also 35 behind Ryan Newman — a driver who’s competed in only three races this season.



News Briefs


Chase Briscoe completed a heartwarming story by winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Thursday just days after discovering his wife suffered a miscarriage. Briscoe held off Cup champion Kyle Busch on the final lap while fighting back tears; it’s his first career Darlington victory. Briscoe later revealed Busch's wife, Samantha, had reached out with her own experiences earlier in the week as the couple had suffered similar heartbreak in their own family last year.



Chase Elliott has spoken with Kyle Busch after their incident Friday night knocked the No. 9 Chevrolet out of the race. "I don't think he wrecked me on purpose," Elliott said. "I get that mistakes happen, that's part of life and I get it... He apologized to me. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the result, so at the end of the day, it still cost us a shot at the win." Elliott wound up 38th while Busch earned a runner-up finish.

Top Tier


I'm going to go outside the box here and choose Team Penske's Joey Logano. Last year's Charlotte runner-up has a victory at this track (2015) and 10 career top-10 finishes in 20 starts. There have been some rough runs in between but Logano already has shown strength with the 2020 version of NASCAR's handling package. He won two of the four races run before the pandemic, including at another 1.5-mile oval, Las Vegas Motor Speedway.



Logano will have better value than a Joe Gibbs Racing trio that may underperform. Kyle Busch is your best bet of that group, leading laps in four straight Charlotte events and winning the 2018 edition of this race. But Martin Truex Jr.? He's yet to produce consistent chemistry with new crew chief James Small.

Middle Tier


I think you have to go Jimmie Johnson entering a week of what will be his final oval starts at this track. Eight victories in 35 career races here include four straight in the 2004-05 season. As of late, Johnson's performance has ticked back up at this oval, running 7th, 5th and 8th in his last three starts here.



Third-year driver William Byron won the pole for this race last year and can't be counted out. He led 31 laps in that race, coming home ninth, and is paired with a Hendrick Motorsports group that flashed some speed at Darlington the past two races. Don't forget, he was the iRacing star during the height of the pandemic, winning three eNASCAR Pro Invitational Series events when the sport was sidelined.



Lower Tier


It's hard not to take a look at rookie Tyler Reddick, last year's Charlotte Xfinity winner. He'll be making his first Cup start on this oval but is no stranger to success on intermediates. He earned a ninth at another 1.5-mile oval, Kansas Speedway, last year and earned his first top-10 finish of 2020 at Darlington earlier this week.



Looking for a true longshot? How about Corey Lajoie of Go FAS Racing. The No. 32 team, running with better equipment this year, was a surprise 12th with Lajoie in last May's Coca-Cola 600. They were 16th at Las Vegas earlier this year running this handling package and this type race can favor them, too. Underdog teams who conserve equipment and “survive” until the finish can steal a top 20 or even a top 15 here.

Kyle Busch leads the vegasinsider.com chart with 4/1 odds at last check although Martin Truex Jr. is close behind at 9/2. Last Sunday's Darlington winner, Kevin Harvick, sits at 11/2.



Your best longshot bet? That would be Reddick at 50/1.

NASCAR’s West Coast swing continues this weekend with the Xfinity and Cup Series both in action at Auto Club Speedway.

The 2-mile southern California track has hosted NASCAR Racing since 1997 and has seen 17 different Cup Series winners in 30 races. Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with six wins, including his first career win back in his rookie season in 2002.

With this being his final season as a full-time driver, the trip to Auto Club will be special for Johnson. The track will pay tribute to the El Cajon native through a variety of ways, including having Johnson lead the the five-wide salute during the pace laps along with his wife, Chandra, and daughters, Genevieve and Lydia, waving the green flag.

In addition to Johnson, Cole Custer, Matt DiBenedetto, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick are the California drivers in the field.

Kyle Busch is looking to bounce back from respective finishes of 34th and 15th to start the season on Sunday at ACS where he is the defending race winner. Busch has finished in the top 10 in seven of his last eight starts at ACS, including three wins in that span.

Auto Club: Race Winners | Driver Averages

Drivers look forward to racing at Auto Club Speedway because it has the oldest asphalt surface on the circuit.

“It’s top three on my list as far as tracks that I’m excited to go to, just for the fact that the asphalt is so worn out,” Harvick said. “It is very similar to Atlanta in a much different shape of a racetrack. It’s a very unique racetrack because it is so wide and you have so many options to run all over the racetrack.”

Austin Dillon, who won the pole for this event last year, concurs with Harvick.

“I did an appearance at Auto Club Speedway not too long ago and I told the track officials, ‘whatever you do, don’t repave it,'” Dillon said. “Or, wait to repave it until you can figure out how to make an asphalt that is very similar to what is on the track now.”

Motor Racing Network will have live coverage of Friday’s two NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions (4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET) along with Saturday’s qualifying session (2:30 p.m. ET).

Jeff Striegle, AlexHayden and Rusty Wallace will call Sunday’s Auto Club 400 from the booth. Dan Hubbard and Kyle Rickey will be in the turns with Steve Post, Dillon Welch and Kim Coon reporting from pit road. MRN’s air time for Sunday is 2:30 p.m. ET.

Entry Lists: Cup | Xfinity

Saturday’s Xfinity Series Production Alliance Group 300 will see a new face in Auto Club’s Victory Lane as no previous winners are entered in the race.

Chase Briscoe will look to go back-to-back on the season after claiming the win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He will be making his second start at the 2-mile track after finishing fifth in 2019.

“Last year, we were in the top-five and had good speed at the end of the race but, honestly, it took me the whole race to figure out how to run the track,” Briscoe said. “I’m looking forward to going back there this year with a baseline of where to start.”

Along with Briscoe, Justin Allgaier and Daniel Hemric are the only drivers entered in the race with a top-five finish at ACS.

“I love racing at Fontana,” Allgaier said. “It’s just a fun track because it’s fast and slick. Our JR Motorsports Camaros have already showed a lot of speed this season, so I think if we can get our BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevy handling like we want it to during practice, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with come Saturday.”

MRN’s air time for Saturday’s race is 3:30 p.m. ET. Dan Hubbard and Steve Post will call the action from the booth. Kyle Rickey and Alex Hayden will be in the turns with Dillon Welch and Kim Coon reporting from pit road.

The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series gets underway Sunday at the Daytona International Speedway with 40 of the world's best drivers going for glory in the prestigious Daytona 500.

Denny Hamlin took victory in 2019 for the second time in his career and will be aiming to retain his title, while defending series champion Kyle Busch will be out to win the Daytona 500 for the first time.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will start the race from pole position after edging out Alex Bowman, who will start from second on the grid for the second year running.

Daytona 500 Preview

Series champion Busch may have two championships and more than 200 NASCAR race wins to his name, but he has never tasted victory at the Daytona 500 in 14 attempts at the Great American Race.

Yet the 34-year-old's lack of success at Daytona Beach, Florida does not appear to have affected his confidence given his comments in the buildup to the season's curtain-raiser:

The “Great American Race” is back! The Daytona 500 kicks off the NASCAR 2020 season Sunday with an exciting field of veterans and newcomers. Headlining the field are a couple Toyota drivers, two-time 500 champion and last year’s winner Denny Hamlin and his teammate, the 2019 NASCAR champion, Kyle Busch.

Joe Gibbs Racing has already gotten off to a great start in 2020 as Erik Jones’ #20 Toyota won the Busch Clash last Sunday. If that was a preview to what’s to come Sunday afternoon, be prepared for multiple big wrecks and repairs.

The Toyotas aren’t the only manufacturer capable of performing well here. The Chevys once again locked up a front row, after qualifying with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. & Alex Bowman having the fastest times. Austin Dillon was the last Chevy to take his car to victory lane in 2018, which ended a three year Chevy drought in this race.

We’ll see if qualifying speed can hold up to racing speed this year as the Chevys seemed to fade in past years. One of those Chevrolet drivers is someone I’m eyeing, if his car can find its way out of the big accidents.

Finally, the Fords bring the most cars into the field once again. Finding teammates to work with late in this race could be critical, as the Fords will hope that their numbers will give them an advantage throughout the race.

With all that said, I’ll give you five drivers to key in on Sunday, all hoping to find victory lane for the first time.

1) Chase Elliot: Odds (10/1)

If you look at Chase Elliott’s finishes, you’re probably wondering why I would have someone so high who only finished in the top 20 twice in eight starts. Well, he’s been really unlucky in his four Daytona 500s and his numbers show this. Chase has lead laps in six of those eight races and he’s finished Stage 1 8th or better in four straight races on this track.

The one thing I like about Elliott is that he’s able to take chances and he knows how to get up front. He’s shown that ability in his win at Talladega. Talladega, which is a superspeedway similar to Daytona, should give you an idea of the drivers who excel on these tracks. Elliott saw his first win last year in Talladega and finished top-10 in the fall race as well. Taking his experience at Talladega and with better luck in the 500, I think #24 car has the best chance to see victory lane if everything falls accordingly,

2) Ryan Blaney: Odds (13/1)

Another young driver who’s shown he can lead laps in Daytona is Ryan Blaney. In the past four races at Daytona, Blaney led the most laps of any driver (132 laps). Similar to Elliott, Blaney has been up front for most of the race, but has been taken out by the big wrecks. Blaney has two stage wins in Stage 2 in both Daytona 500s and he’s accounted for five top-5 Stage 1 results.

While Blaney doesn’t have many wins to show for the past few seasons, he’s been on the cusp of a few victories the past two years. Blaney’s only victory last season was at Talladega, so that should trend well for this weekend. He’ll have a new crew chief, Todd Gordon, who was crew chief for 2018 NASCAR champion Joey Logano. Logano won the Daytona 500 back in 2015, so having someone who’s led a driver to victory lane here will help. Blaney and Elliott are the two guys I’ll be keying on this Sunday.

3) Brad Keselowski: Odds (11/1)

I’ll stick with another Penske Ford to win this race. Brad Keselowski may have the most to prove of the Ford drivers. Not only has he switched crew chiefs, like his teammates Blaney and Logano, but he may have lost the best crew chief of the three. Paul Wolfe has been teamed up with Brad since 2010, and now in comes crew chief Jeremy Bullins. While I think this move will have an impact later this season, I don’t think it will have any affect Sunday in Daytona.

You can tell Keselowski had fire inside this past Sunday, when he was knocked out of the Busch Clash by his teammate. He claimed he had the best car that day and that’s something to take into consideration.

Keselowski has wins in Talladega and in the Daytona Busch Clash, so he’s capable of getting the win. The Penske Fords probably have the best group of drivers in this field outside of Joe Gibbs. I’m expecting the Fords to use their numbers in drafting to the front, which should help their chances at the end.

4) Clint Bowyer: Odds (25/1)

Clint Bowyer is a driver who likes to party and celebrate. Clint is a Kansas City Chiefs fan and they’ve given him a full NASCAR offseason of celebrating. That momentum and energy is something that could continue into this weekend, if he’s able to score a win.

Bowyer hasn’t seen much success here lately, but he did put on a good show in his last appearance at Daytona. Bowyer finished 34th, but was in front before the inevitable wreck happened that ended his day.

Stewart-Hass Racing has been getting carried by teammate Kevin Harrick the past two seasons, and I think with Bowyer turns it around with a good showing this Sunday. While he’s not someone I’m expecting to win, if Bowyer’s remaining at the end, he’ll have one of the better cars left on the track.

5) Matt DiBenedetto: (20/1)

Here’s a guy who’s made his way up the NASCAR ranks the past two seasons. From having to almost ask fans to fund & sponsor his ride, to now driving for the Wood Brothers, DiBenedetto’s story has been something to watch.

Last year, Matt led the most laps in the 500 and was in 4th place, before ending up in the wall. Now with a better car and equipment, I think this gives DiBenedetto his best shot at his first NASCAR win. We saw him fall just short in Bristol last season; this Sunday could be his moment.

Driving for two different manufactures, DiBenedetto has finished with two top-10s in Daytona the last three years. I think if there’s a driver we’ll see improve each week, it’s #21 Matt DiBenedetto.
