Talladega Superspeedway and its YellaWood 500 this weekend (Sunday, Oct. 4) serves as the biggest hurdle for all NASCAR playoff drivers inside the Round of 12. The final pack racing event of the year will keep most, if not all, drivers in the 39-car field superglued together, giving most of them a shot to draft to the lead on any particular lap.

When it works... it's spectacular. June's race here was fairly clean, one of the most exciting superspeedway races we've seen in recent history. Ryan Blaney kept his nose ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at the line by .007 seconds, about the size of his front bumper. Fifty-seven (57) lead changes were a season high as the handling package for this track produced the perfect mix of throttle response inside the draft.

It was the second time since 2018 a race at Talladega was held without a giant wreck wiping out half the field. In fact, only five cars failed to finish as fuel mileage, not wrinkled fenders scrambled the field in the closing laps.

But don't be lulled to sleep with a few exceptions to the rule. The Big One is always a split-second away at this track, leaving every driver in the field on edge as to how that carnage could ruin their race in a heartbeat. Even small wrecks on the final lap have led to some of the most sensational incidents in NASCAR history, like this 2009 contact that sent Carl Edwards flipping and his No. 99 car bouncing off the catchfence. Eight fans were hurt in the melee.

Only Kurt Busch can rest easy among the drivers seeking a trip to the Round of 8. Even points leader Kevin Harvick can make himself vulnerable with a last-place finish at a track where Lady Luck plays no favorites.

It's the one place on the circuit where there's truly no major analysis to be had. These drivers put the pedal down, play a chess match of strategy inside the draft and hope those moves work out in their favor. It's impossible to pull away out front as the leader adjusts from pushing ahead to blocking all comers in order to maintain track position.

Chances are, the playoff drivers start with an edge as all 12 start up front for this event. But at Talladega, more than any other track, there are no guarantees.

YellaWood 500

Date: Sunday, Oct. 4

Time: 2 p.m. ET

Track: Talladega Superspeedway (Lincoln, Ala.)

TV: NBC

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Kurt Busch

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver and 2004 Cup champion pulled a surprise at his hometown track, Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The benefactor of a timely caution in the middle of green-flag pit stops, Busch earned track position and then held on through a series of chaotic restarts to earn the victory in Sunday's South Point 400. It’s the seventh straight year Busch has won at least one race and it keeps him in title contention with a CGR organization that's had its share of controversy throughout 2020. (See: Larson, Kyle, racial slurs.)

Consider Busch had just two top-5 finishes at LVMS in 21 career starts entering last weekend. His 21.5 average finish there is by far the worst for him at any track... and that's after adding in his recent victory. Could this momentum be what's needed to become a dark-horse title contender?

"This is 20 years of agony and defeat," Busch said afterwards. "And now, today with this triumph, I don't know if I have any more gas left or if I just filled my tank up to go win every race that I'm going to go race next."

Who's at the Back: William Byron

Hopes were high for Byron after climbing into the NASCAR playoffs with his first career Cup victory in the Daytona regular-season finale. A fifth-place finish at Darlington Raceway seemed to indicate this team, led by seven-time championship crew chief Chad Knaus, had hit their stride at the perfect time.

Think again. Runs of 21st, 38th and 25th, including a wreck at Bristol Motor Speedway not of his making, have Byron knocked out of title contention and slumping to 16th in the standings. Knaus also announced he'll leave the pit box this week (more on that in a minute) and the third-year driver will have his third different full-time crew chief in 2021.

News Briefs

Chad Knaus has been promoted to Vice President of Competition at Hendrick Motorsports beginning with the 2021 Cup season. Knaus will oversee the four HMS Cup teams, ending a crew chief career that included seven titles and over 80 wins with driver Jimmie Johnson from 2002-18. Since the two parted ways, Knaus has won just once, at Daytona in August, while Johnson is winless in his final year of Cup competition.

"Sitting on the top of the pit box for as long as I have," Knaus said this week, "I've been traveling full-time since I was about 16 years old, so it's time to kind of pull back just a little bit and not be on the road every single week and spend some time with my family."

NASCAR stayed true to its word and produced a 2021 Cup Series schedule filled with changes. Two intermediate tracks, Chicagoland Speedway and Kentucky Speedway, were removed from the schedule, the first time that's happened since 2005. In their place came two road courses: Road America in Wisconsin and the Circuit of the Americas track down in Austin, Texas. Bristol Motor Speedway will also hold the first Cup dirt race since 1970, covering its surface for the annual spring race in March. Other adjustments include second dates for Atlanta Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway, a switch to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course from the oval, and shifting the All-Star Race to Texas Motor Speedway.

Brendan Gaughan will retire from NASCAR competition following Sunday’s race at Talladega. Gaughan, who's been running part-time the last several seasons, will hang it up at 45 years old and over 500 career NASCAR starts in Cup, Xfinity and Trucks. He never won in Cup but has eight top-10 finishes in 66 starts, including two this season for Beard Motorsports' No. 62.

Close your eyes, point at a driver, and just hit the button to add them to your roster. Seriously... that's an effective Talladega strategy. Lady Luck matters more here than at any other racetrack and seriously hinders any "expert" opinion at this place. Forced parity, unavoidable wrecks and weird drafting strategies make the outcome impossible to handicap.

That said... Ford has won nine of the last 10 races held at Talladega. Team Penske has won seven of those and Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney are poised to add to that total. Logano and Keselowski, in particular, could be in good position early as both drivers start near the front. My money's on Kes, in particular, to make some noise as a five-time 'Dega winner. He's had five straight runs outside the top 10 here which means good luck should be headed his way. Be forewarned, though... this team works together at this track so any wreck is likely to wipe out all three of them.

Since Ford has been doing so well in recent races here... how about a flyer on Roush Fenway Racing? Ryan Newman has yet to reach the top 10 since February's horrific Daytona 500 wreck and is anxious to end 2020 on a high note. RFR has the speed at these plate tracks and teammate Chris Buescher has momentum in the form of back-to-back top-10 finishes.

I also feel good about Matt DiBenedetto's chances after a second-place finish last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. DiBenedetto has been quiet about his 2021 status with the Wood Brothers, an option he expected to hear was renewed on Sept. 30. He has yet to record a top-10 finish at Talladega but has evolved into one of the better pack racers on the circuit. Auditioning for your future is a powerful motivator at a track where circumstances can easily tilt Matty D's way.

Lower Tier

Here's where you really make your money. Finding the underdogs who survive to the finish at 'Dega, avoiding wrecks and sneaking inside the top 10, make the difference in whether your roster cashes in.

This time around, I'm going with Brendan Gaughan and Ryan Preece. Gaughan, retiring after this race, will leave it all on the line with a team whose sole focus is these races at Daytona and Talladega. He was 21st at this race in June but has an average finish of 7.5 at the two 2020 Daytona oval events.

As for Preece, he's had such a horrible season with JTG Daugherty Racing people forget what a strong pack racer he was as a rookie. His career-best third-place result came at 'Dega in the spring of 2019 and JTG has the speed to run up front again. Most people choose Stenhouse, who has won twice on these tracks, but Preece is a cheaper pick with better upside.

What Vegas Thinks

Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Joey Logano lead the way at 'Dega with 10/1 odds to win the YellaWood 500. Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski sit at 11/1 while point leader Kevin Harvick sits at 14/1.

Want a longshot like Brendan Gaughan? He's 66/1 in his final Cup race.

The NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series will take to the high banks of Talladega Superspeedway next weekend, Oct. 3, for its second superspeedway race of 2020.

A nearly full field of entrants will take the Chevrolet Silverado 250 green flag, as 39 drivers and teams are listed on the entry list.

Among the changes, Jason White will replace his team owner Josh Reaume in the No. 00 entry. The team will also switch from a Toyota to a Chevrolet. Reaume moves over to the team’s second entry, the No. 33.

After not making the cross-country trip to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Norm Benning will be back in action in his own No. 6 ride. So too will Codie Rohrbaugh, as he pilots his No. 9 Chevrolet.

After a lengthy absence, NASCAR’s all-time leading starter Joe Nemechek is back. He will drive his No. 8 Ford.

Fellow part-timer Korbin Forrister will make his first start for DGR-Crosley after several outings so far in his own truck in 2020. He replaces Dylan Lupton in the No. 17 Ford.

Louisiana native Bryan Dauzat will give it another go in the No. 28 for FDNY Racing.

Niece Motorsports sees another shakeup. Bayley Currey will be back in the No. 40 truck and Trevor Bayne returns to the No. 45. Natalie Decker stays in the No. 44.

South Carolina campaigner Gus Dean will be making his first start since the season-opening contest at Daytona International Speedway. He will wheel the Hill Motorsports No. 56.

Finally, Robby Lyons is back in the No. 97 Ford for Diversified Motorsports Enterprises. Lyons last competed at Kansas Speedway.

The 2020 South Point 400 serves as Las Vegas Motor Speedway's second NASCAR Cup Series race of the season. But boy, have things changed since the last time the sport visited this 1.5-mile oval in February.

The obvious answer, of course, is COVID-19 and the way it turned this year upside down. But back then, consider that the point leader was Ryan Blaney while the top 5 in the Cup standings included names like Kyle Larson and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Ty Dillon earned a 10th-place finish that race, the first of his career outside the big pack racing superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega. That boosted the hopes of small-time Germain Racing, hoping they could somehow spark a Cinderella playoff run. Joey Logano cruised to victory up front, leading 54 laps over a surprise runner-up finisher: Matt DiBenedetto.

Of all those names I just mentioned, only Logano remains in title contention. It was announced this week Dillon's team will be sold; Larson doesn't even have a Cup ride. Stenhouse missed the playoffs by a country mile while Blaney and DiBenedetto found themselves bounced after the first round.

It's an example of how unpredictable one of the sport's more competitive intermediate tracks can be. And keep in mind this oval is supposed to be the least wacky of any place NASCAR visits inside the Round of 12. The slot machine-style finish expected at Talladega Superspeedway next weekend, plus the mystery surrounding the new-ish ROVAL event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, make a solid finish here incredibly important for championship contenders.

That group was whittled by four last week as Blaney, William Byron, Cole Custer, and DiBenedetto were sent packing after Bristol Motor Speedway. The points reset has left Kevin Harvick with a comfortable 62-point lead over the cutline; he and Denny Hamlin (+43) should cruise into the next round barring catastrophe. Keselowski (+30) could also secure a spot by repeating a trip to Victory Lane Sunday night (he's won at LVMS three times).

The postseason, though has taken a back seat most of the week by perhaps the biggest NASCAR news of the year: NBA legend and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan's decision to start a new Cup team in 2021 with Hamlin. Bubba Wallace will drive for the organization, moving over from Richard Petty Motorsports, as one of the country's most prominent African-American athletes teams up with the sport’s only full-time African-American driver.

It's an earthquake-size tremor with ramifications that will last for years. Hamlin, whose contract reportedly expires with Joe Gibbs Racing next season, will logically be driving for a team he co-owns sooner rather than later. Toyota, after many failed partnerships with JGR, finally has a satellite team with deep financial pockets capable of competing for titles. And Wallace, whose popularity rose this year with his commitment to social justice, now has the equipment needed to win races at this level.

Once the green flag drops Sunday night, though all eyes will return to racing at the gambling capital of America. Can Team Penske push back to the front with Keselowski or Logano at a track they've had success at in recent years? Will a red-hot Harvick become the first double-digit Cup winner since Jimmie Johnson cruised to his second title back in 2007? Or will a non-playoff driver play their cards right and pull a royal flush that gets them to Victory Lane?

South Point 400

Date: Sunday, Sept. 27

Time: 7 p.m. ET

Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway

TV: NBCSN

Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Kyle Busch

Sure, it's easy to write about Kevin Harvick in this space; he outdueled Busch at Bristol for his career-high ninth win of the season. But to dismiss Busch out of hand despite frustration over his second-place finish would be premature.

"I'm going to be eliminated in the next round," Busch said in his post-race presser. The stats might say... not so fast. Busch led 159 laps at Bristol, the highest total for him since Richmond in September 2019. He won the pole at Las Vegas, his hometown track, back in February and starts on the front row Sunday night. And he has three straight top-10 finishes for the first time in a topsy-turvy 2020 season.

Don't count the reigning Cup champion out until the fat lady sings.

Who's at the Back: Ryan Newman

It's a miracle Newman is with us after that terrifying crash in February's Daytona 500. That alone gives him a pass with Roush Fenway Racing. But that ninth-place finish remains the lone top 10 he's earned during what's by far the worst season of his career. Even in a seven-race, pre-rookie year of 2001 Newman had two top-10 finishes.

He's also earned just 14 lead-lap finishes in 26 starts, led just 34 laps, and produced an average finish of 20.2. It's all part of a big step back for RFR as Newman's teammate, Chris Buescher, hasn't done much better: he sits 20th in the season standings.

News Briefs

Michael Jordan says it took an innocent joke and 10 days to turn him into a Cup Series team owner. Denny Hamlin said, "Looks like we're owners together, ha ha," after a false report recently linked them to another Cup operation. Jordan's response included, "If you want to make it real news, let me know." The alignment with Toyota and JGR hasn't been officially announced but appears a mere formality. Bubba Wallace, meanwhile, moves to the new organization after a career-high five top-10 finishes for Richard Petty Motorsports and their No. 43 Chevrolet.

Jordan's new team will have an automatic spot on the Cup grid after purchasing a charter from Germain Racing. Bob Germain, after over a decade running at NASCAR's top level, has chosen to close his No. 13 team after the 2020 Cup season after losing primary sponsor GEICO. Driver Ty Dillon will be a free agent but claims "his best racing is yet to come" as he aggressively pursues a full-time NASCAR ride for 2021.

Ross Chastain will be Kyle Larson's permanent replacement behind the wheel of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet. The move brings the 27-year-old full circle with an organization he was going to compete with full-time at the NASCAR Xfinity Series level back in 2019. However, a Ponzi scheme from primary sponsor DC Solar ended in an FBI raid that cost him the opportunity. Chastain then worked his way back up the ranks and is currently competing in the NXS playoffs for an independent team, Kaulig Racing. The news also means the team's interim driver, 2003 Cup champion Matt Kenseth, will go back into retirement after the season.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

History shows us Las Vegas comes up aces for the Team Penske duo of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. They've combined for three of the last four race wins at this track; the last time either driver finished outside the top 10 was seven years ago!

That'’s the type of track record that locks people in your roster. Build a winning team around them and ignore the high-priced championship favorites of Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin.

Related: Best Las Vegas Motor Speedway Drivers for DraftKings

Middle Tier

Jimmie Johnson's four Las Vegas wins are the most of any driver on the Cup circuit. He's had limited success there lately, failing to lead a lap since 2017, but was a surprising fifth in the race here this February. Doesn't it feel like at some point the seven-time champion has to go out on a high note?

Matt DiBenedetto tied the best finish of his career with a second-place run at this track in February. This weekend is also his last, best chance to impress Ford before his contract is up for renewal on Sept. 30. With Austin Cindric waiting in the wings, what better way to fend him off than with an upset victory?

Lower Tier

Bubba Wallace should be riding high from his new Cup ride in 2021. Use him in a No. 43 car he drove to sixth in February, still one of his best runs this season.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has been an afterthought much of the summer while suffering through horrible luck with JTG Daugherty Racing. However, LVMS is a great longshot pull of the slot machine. He's got 35 laps led and two top-six finishes in his last three starts at the track, giving his No. 47 Chevrolet team a chance to play spoiler.

What Vegas Thinks

Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, and last year's winner Martin Truex Jr. are tied with 5/1 odds on top of the vegasinsider.com board. Kevin Harvick is at 6/1 while Denny Hamlin sits at 8/1.

Matt DiBenedetto is easily the best longshot pick at 40/1 after February's runner-up result.

DraftKings Xfinity NASCAR DFS – Alsco 300 – September 26, 2020

Core Plays

Austin Cindric – DK: $11,300 – Starting 2nd

There isn’t a ton to say about Cindric here – if you are playing Xfinity DFS you likely know the season he has had with 21 top ten finishes in 26 races, including four wins. At intermediate-sized tracks (1.5 miles), Cindric has finished second at Kansas, second at Texas, and back to back wins at Kentucky. When it comes to dominator opportunity, we don’t need to look too far past the top. Cindric will have to battle with Briscoe in the early part of the race and Briscoe makes a nice pivot at a similar salary. Vegas as Cindric and Briscoe as the two favorites to take the checkered flag.

Jesse Little – DK: $5,400 – Starting 24st

Little has been the most consistent bang for our buck play for someone under $6,000 all season and this price is a huge discount from the $6,200 we saw just a few races ago. Little has struggled over the recent stretch of short-tracks, but looking to larger super speedway and intermediate-sized tracks like Vegas we really see him settle into some consistent numbers. We got a 15th place finish at Texas and 14th at Kentucky, along with an 18th in Miami. All these tracks are a little different, but hold in the 1.5 mile track size. Little’s last run at Vegas was a 14th place finish while starting 22nd. With a strong team car here and a low-price, Little is the best point per dollar play on the slate.

NASCAR's most famous race under the lights takes center stage Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. The 60th Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race will mark the first time Thunder Valley's short track runs a race during the Cup Series postseason.

The championship field will be reduced from 16 to 12 through 500 laps at this high-banked, fast-paced oval. Just .533 miles in length, lap times here average under 15 seconds and contact can spark on-track fireworks in the blink of an eye. Track position is key as wrong place, wrong time can leave you swept up in somebody else’s mess in a heartbeat.

The playoff drivers don’t have to worry about qualifying at the back of the field, though. NASCAR's new rules dictate the worst any of them will start is 16th under the COVID-19 rules system. Once again, there will be no practice or on-track action for the Cup Series with the grid set by the lowest score from the metric outlined below.

25% of the metric will be the driver's finishing position from the previous race.

25% of the metric will be the owner's finishing position from the previous race.

35% of the metric will be the owner's current position in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings.

15% of the metric will be their fastest lap during the previous race.

Forty teams are entered this weekend for 40 spots on the grid. No one failed to qualify as the two "open" full-time entries of Gaunt Brothers Racing (No. 96) and MBM Motorsports (No. 66) were joined by Tommy Baldwin Racing (No. 7) and BJ McLeod Racing’s No. 78.

Brad Keselowski (1st) will start up front for the second time this season. Both those poles have come at Bristol as he looks to sweep both races here for the first time in his Cup career.

Joey Logano (2nd) has started top 3 at every short track race this year (four starts). He’s on a streak of back-to-back top-5 finishes for the first time thus far in 2020.

Denny Hamlin (7th) is the defending race winner.

Cole Custer (12th) is the highest-qualifying rookie. Tyler Reddick (17th) and Christopher Bell (18th) make it three rookies inside the top 20.

JJ Yeley (32nd) replaces rookie Brennan Poole this week as Poole ran out of sponsorship for the Bristol race. He’ll move over from the No. 27 of Rick Ware Racing with backing from Thriv5.

Gray Gaulding (37th) replaces Yeley behind the wheel of the No. 27 with sponsorship from Panini America. It’s his 7th Cup start of the season.

Josh Bilicki (39th) returns to the track with part-time Tommy Baldwin Racing. Sponsorship comes from Insurance King as the team makes its 18th start of the season.

Garrett Smithley (40th) jumps behind the wheel of BJ McLeod’s Chevrolet, making its first start in Cup since Dover in August.

1. Justin Allgaier ($11,000) - There was one too many cautions in the spring race. Allgaier lost the lead on the final restart, and in his aggressive battle to regain the lead, he wrecked. Despite turning a 1st place finish into an 18th place finish, Allgaeir still scored 84 fantasy points at Bristol.

2. Justin Haley ($9,600) - The results do not show it, but Haley had one of the best cars in the first Bristol race. He was so fast that he felt confident moving the slower drivers in front of him. Karma got him in the end. After moving drivers all race long, eventually he got caught in another’s driver’s wreck.

3. Noah Gragson ($10,200) - Coming out of the COVID-19 break, Gragson was one of the hottest drivers in the series. He caught bad breaks in both Homestead races, but at Bristol the breaks went his way. Gragson benefited from a late race caution, but he wasn’t handed the lead. He had to execute, and he wrestled the lead away from Allgaier on the final restart.

4. Gray Gaulding ($7,400) - The #07 SS Greenlight Racing Bobby Dotter car has been a cheat code in Xfinity DFS this season. This car has been good for the last several years, but the rotation of drivers has allowed this car to be routinely underpriced along with a premium DFS starting position.

5. Jesse Little ($5,000) - The last two months have not been kind to Little, and Bristol isn’t going to be any nicer. If he just goes out and turns laps, then he’ll be fine starting 25th at this price. Bayley Currey finished 20th in spring, and he was eight laps down. Just turn laps Jesse.

6. Colby Howard ($4,800) - The #15 JD Motorsports car was running inside the top 15 for most of the Bristol race until Howard suffered damage and got into the wall on lap 257. Howard got greedy at the end. Hopefully, he’s learned his lesson.

7. Harrison Burton ($9,900) - In the spring race, Burton got lucky and was awarded the pole. He led the first 40 laps of the race. Through pit sequencing, Burton cycled to the lead at the beginning of stage 2. Burton led 81 laps not because he was the best, but because he was good enough and he had track position to start the race.

8. Riley Herbst ($8,300) - Bristol has been embarrassing for Herbst. He wrecked on lap one of a Bristol K&N East race in 2019. He wrecked in the spring Xfinity race, but at least he made it to lap 256.

9. Josh Williams ($5,200) - His price matches his performance this season. Early this year and last year, Williams was a $6,000 to $7,000 driver. This year, the results do not lie. He’s a punt, but if he doesn’t wreck, then he can be the highest scoring punt.

10. Myatt Snider ($8,900) - It doesn’t take a great car to earn a top 15 in a Bristol Xfinity race. Enough good cars wreck and there are plenty of wave around opportunities. Snider won’t be in the RCR car this time, so there will not be a repeat performance of his 5th place finish, but if he stays out of trouble a top 15 is very likely.

11. Austin Cindric ($11,400) - Daytona was a wreckfest, Cindric got a DNF. Pocono was a wreckfest, Cindric got a DNF. Bristol follows this pattern. In the other 22 races, Cindric’s average finish is 5th.

12. Chase Briscoe ($11,800) - Last week was a really bad sign for Briscoe, but an obvious one. Briscoe struggles at short tracks and he has leaned heavily on his pit crew for wins. Bristol is a different kind of short track, but he’s never led a single lap at Bristol.

13. Brandon Jones ($9,400) - Bristol has been a decent track for Jones. He’s not the best driver and he won’t have the best setup, but there will be plenty of opportunities to get out front. Jones will need help, and there will be plenty of cautions and restarts to move him forward.

14. Ross Chastain ($10,600) - This seems like it would be a great track for Chastain. While Bristol rewards aggressive driving, it also punishes aggressive driving. Chastain has wrecked out of his last two Bristol races.

15. Tommy Joe Martins ($5,700) - Two races in two days is a little too much to ask from Tommy Joe Martins’ small team. It’s not a surprise that his car finished several laps down on the backend of the double header at Richmond. Since July, Martins has put the mechanical failures to rest and he has routinely earned top 20 finishes.

16. Jeb Burton ($9,100) - The #8 car has been a major disappointment this season and last Saturday was more of the same. Burton finished 17 laps down. He rebounded on Sunday and finished 2nd. He’s back in the car this weekend desperately trying to get some momentum going for this JR Motorsports car.

17. Brett Moffitt ($8,700) - In two of the last three short track races, Moffit has earned a top 10 finish. That includes a 10th place finish at the high banked concrete track in Dover that is comparable to Bristol.

18. Anthony Alfredo ($8,500) - The #21 RCR car is good, but it’s not great. In 25 races this season, it has 12 top 10 finishes. It’s better than the #8 car, but the part time JR Motorsports drivers are better than the RCR part timers.

19. Ryan Sieg ($7,800) - In the spring race, Sieg was running in 9th with 25 laps remaining, but a tire issue forced a green flag pit stop. At the end of the day, he finished 16th. During the spring, Sieg was cursed. His skill and his car’s speed were hidden by bad luck.

20. Jeremy Clements ($7,600) - He always runs well at Bristol. Clements knows that he has the talent and a good enough car to earn a solid finish. The plan is as it always is at Bristol - stay out of trouble. If he’s running at the end of this mess, then he’ll be inside the top 10.

Trevor Bayne is making a return to his home track Thursday night.

The Knoxville driver will be driving the No. 45 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet in the UNOH 200 for the NASCAR Gander RV Truck Series at Bristol Motor Speedway.

“I’m pumped for Bristol. If there was one race on the whole schedule I could pick, it would be the night race at Bristol,” he said. “I went from thinking I might never race there again to racing there Thursday night. I think it’s a place if we don’t have mechanical issues, I think we could have a really good run or even win the race.”

While Bayne burst onto the scene with his win in the 2011 Daytona 500, Bristol was his best track statistically over a NASCAR Cup Series career from 2011-18. He posted four top-12 finishes in nine races with a high of fifth in the 2016 Food City 500.

His first two races with the Niece Motorsports team have resulted in finishes of 27th and 29th, but he pointed out there were mechanical issues in both races. Otherwise, he feels the team can be a contender as Ross Chastain won three races in Niece trucks in 2019.

According to Bayne, his deal came together in five days. It’s a race-by-race deal he’s trying to make the most of. Since he’s been out of racing, he and wife Ashton have been operating a coffee shop in Knoxville. Over the past couple of weeks, he’s been working in the shop early in the week and racing on the weekends.

Bayne, 29, is looking forward to the challenge of racing around Bristol’s high-banked short track.

“Bristol is a physically demanding track and I feel the workload I put myself through with my workouts helps me excel there,” he said. “When it’s 50 laps to go in the race, you see the guy in front of you worn out and starting to make mistakes and you can pressure him into more mistakes. It’s also a mentally demanding race track, especially when we ride the top.”

Over his Cup Series career, Bayne scored five top-five and 16 top-10 finishes in 187 Cup Series starts. He was also a two-time winner in the Xfinity Series with seven poles and 73 top-10 finishes in 152 starts. He won an Xfinity Series pole at Bristol in 2012, running a special paint scheme on his car to honor former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt.

The last two weeks have been an adjustment as the only time he had been behind the wheel of a race car was testing a dirt late model around a local short track.

“It took me longer than I thought it would at Darlington to get adjusted,” he said. “I thought lap 1, I would be tuned in and not missing a beat. But, it took 5-6 laps to get used to the rate of speed again. When you’ve not done it two years, you’ve not gone over 70 miles per hour on the interstate and you jump in a truck and go 180, that’s a big difference.

“There’s no practice and you’re thinking, ‘What am I doing back out here?’ Then, it clicked and I was like, ‘This needs more horsepower.’ I haven’t got to race people hard yet. At Bristol, I hope to be racing people for top-five, top-three or for the win. I feel really good now.

Well, part one of the Richmond doubleheader wasn't what we expected. Kyle Busch finished third, but for the first time since March 2018, Busch didn't lead a lap in an Xfinity race. He had a good DFS day, but not the dominant day that was expected, which left fantasy lineups in some weird spots.

Now, we move onto a Saturday race without Busch. How will things shake out in this one?

Austin Cindric #22 ($11,700) - Starting 12th

The grid inversion for the top 14 finishers means a lot of good cars start just outside the top 10 and have huge upside potential because of that. Starting 12th is Austin Cindric, winner of five races this season and leader of 64 laps in yesterday's race.

Cindric has been the best regular in the series this season. I see no argument against paying up for him except for the "too chalky" argument, but you can get around that by running some lineups without him. But you want exposure to Cindric today.

Weekend Preview: Richmond Raceway

In many ways last week’s NASCAR Cup Series Playoff opener was reflective of the season-long championship stakes – Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. fielded strong Toyotas and led a lot of laps. Ultimately, regular season champion Kevin Harvick held off the field for a series-best eighth trophy and an automatic bid into the Playoffs’ Round 2 in three weeks.

This 2020 Playoff field showed up ready to take the championship hunt to a higher level. And the expectations for Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway (7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) remain equally as high.

Truex has won the last two Richmond races and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch won the two prior to that (2018 sweep). In fact, Busch’s six series victories at the 3/4-mile track are most among his competitors. And while he is winless on the season, expectations are that a venue like Richmond - or even next week’s half-mile Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway – are places that Busch is highly-favored to restore that path to contending for a second straight, and third overall title.

He’s that good at these short tracks.

“Having good cars there [Richmond] has certainly been something that we’ve been fortunate with at Joe Gibbs Racing over the years," said Busch, who drives the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

“I’ve won there six times and I’ve been in the top-five about every time we go there, so I would like to think that we can keep that string going and more importantly, get a win. We need some wins this year and we look forward to Richmond being one of those places we can do that."

Busch has a series-best 22 top-10 finishes in 30 Richmond starts – meaning he earns a top 10, an amazing 73 percent of the time.

“Right now you can still point your way through the first round, but you’re going to need some wins also. Richmond and Bristol, those are great opportunities for us to score a victory. You get two stage wins and a win at Richmond and Bristol – or both and boom you’re right back in the Playoff picture. That would give us a good opportunity to be right back in the ballpark."

The challenge for Busch will be that several of his other key competitors have also circled Richmond as a place to score a win or at least, major points with only one more race after that (Sept. 19 at Bristol) to decide which 12 drivers will advance toward the title among the current 16-driver Playoff field.

Harvick has three Richmond NASCAR Cup Series wins and seven Xfinity Series trophies. Hamlin, who is second in points, 19 behind Harvick, also has three NASCAR Cup Series wins and three Xfinity Series wins at the venue he considers his home track. Defending race winner Truex has two wins as does Joey Logano, who is third in points, Kurt Busch, who is 11th and Clint Bowyer, who is 13th. The only other former winner among the Playoff contingent is Logano’s Team Penske teammate Brad Keselowski, who is ranked fourth in the standings. He won the 2014 Playoff race at Richmond.

Currently, Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Aric Almirola and Bowyer are tied in points amassed, but Almirola has the tiebreaker edge -best finish in the current Playoff round. He is ranked 12th and Bowyer 13th. Their other SHR teammate, rookie Cole Custer is 14th, three points behind the pair. Matt DiBenedetto and Ryan Blaney are 15th and 16th – both 17 points behind Almirola.

Among this group of five drivers, Bowyer has the best Richmond record and is the only one with a previous win – victories in 2008 and 2012. The driver of the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford has 16 top-10 finishes in 29 overall NASCAR Cup Series starts there.

Almirola, who steers the No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, has five top-10 finishes at Richmond in 17 starts. Custer, who drives the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, was a career-best 12th last year making one of a handful of series starts, but he did win the Xfinity Series race at the track last Spring.

Wood Brothers Racing driver Matt DiBenedetto and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney are ranked 15th and 16th in the standings – both 17 points behind Almirola in the 12th place cutoff. Neither of them have ever finished in the top-10 at Richmond. DiBenedetto’s best effort in 10 career starts is 14th last year – eight times he’s finished 20th or worse. Blaney’s best finish in nine career starts is 17th in the 2019 Playoff race. He has five finishes of 20th-place or worse. Neither he nor DiBenedetto has ever led a lap at Richmond.

The good news for these four drivers, is that the points are very close after last weekend’s opener. Only 12 points separate seventh place Chase Elliott from 12th place Almirola. And as it has played out, other than Bowyer, the tightest battles for those last Playoff positions are largely among drivers who wouldn’t count Richmond among their “best” tracks.

“You feel pressure, yeah," Bowyer said. “I’m going to postpone that pressure until I get in that car Saturday night. I’m just going to wait for then. I’m not going to go ahead and feel pressure right now. I’ve chosen not to experience pressure today. Saturday, it’s a different day."

XFINITY SERIES

With three races remaining to set the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff field – this weekend’s Richmond (Va.) Raceway doubleheader will play a major role in seeding the championship-eligible drivers and deciding which competitors complete the 12-driver Playoff lineup.

A highly-anticipated two-race slate this week begins with the Go Bowling 250 on Friday night (7 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) followed by the Virginia is for Race Lovers 250 on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). No current fulltime Xfinity Series driver has won at Richmond previously.

Five-race winner, Team Penske’s Austin Cindric goes into the pivotal race slate holding a sizable 54-point advantage on six-race winner Chase Briscoe, of Stewart-Haas Racing, for the regular season championship title. They are two of seven drivers with victories already – Playoff hopes secure.

Last week’s dramatic Darlington, S.C. finish featured some particularly hard racing between NASCAR Cup Series championship contender Denny Hamlin and Xfinity Series championship contender Ross Chastain, who was looking for his first win of the season.

Contact between the two in the closing laps allowed Brandon Jones to surge by and pick up his third trophy of the year. Chastain finished runner-up (for the fourth time this season), which keeps him third in the driver standings – but eighth place in the Playoff outlook standings, the first driver without a victory on the season.

No doubt he’s eager for that win to propel him to what he would consider a more fitting position to start his first Xfinity Series Playoff run. This weekend gives him two chances for a trip to Victory Lane, however, the0.75-mile Richmond track hasn’t historically been one of Chastain’s best. However, he will start from pole position on Friday.

The driver of the No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet has only a single top-10 finish in nine previous Richmond Xfinity Series starts. That was a runner-up showing in 2018 driving a Chip Ganassi Racing car. He was 11th in last September’s race at the track.

That 2019 Fall race was won by current NASCAR Cup Series rookie Christopher Bell with Cindric runner-up by a healthy 1.7-seconds. In all, six current Playoff eligible drivers finished among the top-10 last September – Justin Allgaier (fourth), Briscoe (fifth), Harrison Burton (sixth), Noah Gragson (seventh) and Michael Annett (ninth).

There are seven drivers with victories this season – six of them are multiple winners from Cindric (five) and Briscoe (six) to three-race winner Jones, and two-race winners Gragson, Justin Haley, and the rookie Burton.

Points-wise there remains one position still considered competitive for the Playoffs. Brandon Brown is 12th points, with a 45-point edge on veteran Jeremy Clements. Myatt Snider is ranked 14th, 51 points behind Brown.

This weekend, marks Snider’s Richmond debut. The 35-year old Clements has 19 Richmond starts, yet only a single top 10 – eighth place in Spring, 2018. He was 35th and 16th in the two races last year. And while he has continued to mount a challenge to Brown, the driver of the No. 51 Chevrolet, hasn’t had a top-10 finish since the Daytona Road Course, five races ago.

Brown, who will celebrate his 27th birthday next week, has six Richmond starts and no top-10 finishes. The driver of the No. 68 Brandonbilt Motorsports Chevrolet has a career-best showing at the track of 19th in Spring, 2018. He was 20th there last year. He hasn’t scored a top-10 this season since a 10th-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway on July 18 – seven races ago. He finished 17th at Darlington last week.

Weekend Preview: NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Regular Season Finale at Richmond Raceway

And so it has it come down to this. A 250-lap race at a venue the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series has not visited since 2005 will decide which 10 competitors advance to the 2020 Playoffs.

The ToyotaCare 250 on Thursday night (8 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Richmond (Va.) Raceway is the series regular season finale. And racing a new track with so much on the line may be the ultimate fair-and-square equalizer.

Austin Hill holds a 38-point advantage over Brett Moffitt for the coveted regular season championship, which will reward the champ with a valuable 15 point bonus for his months-long work. And three drivers – 19-year old Tyler Ankrum, 20 year-old Todd Gilliland and 19-year old Derrick Kraus will be vying for the final two points positions to carry into the postseason. Ankrum is ranked ninth with a four-point edge on Gilliland in 10th. Kraus sits in 11th, 10 points behind Gilliland.

Then of course, there’s a very real possibility that someone not already Playoff eligible takes the victory Thursday night and only one of those three young drivers advances in on points. Two recent championship contenders, 2016 series champ Johnny Sauter and Stewart Friesen – a member of the 2019 Championship 4 – are still winless on the season.

The veterans Sauter and reigning Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series champion Matt Crafton are the only series regulars to have actually competed in a truck race at the 3/4-mile Richmond track previously. The last driver to win a race there was Mike Skinner in 2005.

Sauter, who is ranked 15th in points (125 points behind 10th place Gilliland) has competed in three Richmond truck races with a best finish of 10th in 2003. Crafton has run five truck races at Richmond with a best finish of seventh in 2005. Neither of these veterans has ever led a lap at the track.

Crafton won at Kansas in June so he’s already eligible to defend his season title. Sauter would need a victory Thursday night to make the Playoffs. He has never finished worse than ninth in the championship in his 11 previous fulltime seasons. And last year’s sixth place run marked the only time he’d finished outside the top-four since 2012.

Certainly the last handful of races leading up to Thursday’s regular season finale have been action-packed producing plenty of drama for those three young drivers fighting for those last two points positions.

At various times last week at Darlington – another relatively “new” venue for the series - this trio of Ankrum, Gilliland and Kraus fought it out for position, all suffering different challenges in the race. In the end, Kraus gambled, stayed on track for an Overtime restart and earned a career best runner-up finish to stay every bit in the Playoff hunt.

Gilliland was seventh and Ankrum was 11th – good enough to keep their positions in front of Kraus in the championship points standings.

And while the Richmond oval may be new for them, Ankrum, Gilliland and Kraus have plenty of experience racing tracks shorter than a mile. It’s what they grew up cutting their racing teeth on. All three have good reason to be confident heading to Virginia even if they haven’t raced this track previous.

“Before this year we’d be nervous about going to a track we’ve never been to, but really we’ve gotten used to dealing with stuff we’ve never done before," Gilliland said. “The biggest thing is just getting our setup right for Richmond. We’re trying to base it off races in the past like we have been all season.

“I think our Frontline Enterprises Ford F-150 will be good and hopefully I can get more laps on the Ford simulator to be as prepared as I can. We need to run the best race we can as a team and I think if we do that we should be able to stay above the cut-line and focus on the Playoffs."

There is reason for all three to be optimistic.

Ankrum, driver of the No. 26 GMS Racing Chevrolet, has three ARCA Menards Series East wins on short tracks – ironically driving for Gilliland’s father David.

Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford, earned five of his seven ARCA Menards Series East wins on short tracks and all 12 of his ARCA Menards Series West career wins on short tracks - plus he has an ARCA Menards Series victory at the half-mile Toledo, Ohio track.

Kraus, driver of the No. 19 McAnally Hilgemann Racing Toyota, earned nine of his 10 ARCA Menards Series West victories on short tracks en route to the 2019 series championship.

Championship points leader Austin Hill, who won a ARCA Menards Series East race at Richmond five years ago, will start his No. 16 Hattori Racing Enterprises Toyota from pole position Thursday night alongside last week’s Darlington winner Ben Rhodes. Kraus will start sixth, Gilliland will line up eighth and Ankrum is 11th on the grid.

“Having Richmond on the schedule is great for the series," Hill said. “It’s one of the places the Truck Series was built on and it’s always nice to go back to a track that you’ve won at. It’ll be similar to Darlington where not a lot of guys in the field have much experience and even though it [his win] was five years ago, it’s always a benefit to have laps under your belt."

On Sunday, fans will be allowed in the stands for the first time since last September.

Robin and Bill Bussey, like many Nascar fans, are counting the minutes until they get to walk into the track.

The couple traveled from southern Ohio and has been making this trip for the past 10 years. When they heard fans will be allowed inside, to say they were excited was an understatement.

"We're excited. we're ready to go. we haven't been to a race since Daytona so we're ready to go," said Robin Bussey.

Despite having only 8,000 of the usual 47,000 fans in attendance, for some fans, it's about the experience.

"Coming to the track like this and camping out it's a great social event for us. Obviously, we will be practicing as much we can social distancing but it's a good time to get together with friends," said Bill Bussey.

As for Gary Daymut, this will be his first time watching any race and he is not letting the lack of people get in the way of having a good time.

"It'll be neat to go in a watch. maybe it will turn me into a fan and I'll be here the time. You never know," said Daymut.

The Cookout Southern 500 is set to start at 6 p.m. Sunday. For fans walking in, the raceway will be taking temperatures and requiring face masks.

ABC 15 has reached out to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office to see if there have been any incidents around the track and we are waiting to hear back.

Here at numberFire, we've always got you covered for everything NASCAR DFS. Our track preview breaks down this week's venue, and we also have The Heat Check Fantasy Podcast, where Jim Sannes breaks down his favorite plays for Sunday's slate. Jim also has a current form and odds breakdown to review how NASCAR's best drivers are performing recently analytically.

A wild NASCAR finale ended emotionally for many, as seven-time Cup Series champion was crashed out late battling for a playoff bid. That opened the door wide open for a playoff spot for William Byron, but Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate took matters into his own hands and scored his first career win at Daytona last Saturday Night. Matt DiBenedetto clinched a playoff spot on points as well, which means the 16-car playoff field is set for this weekend's first playoff race at Darlington Raceway. This unique, 1.33 egg-shaped oval has historically played host to the Cup Series event on Labor Day weekend, and that will be no different with the 500-mile race on Sunday night.

This race's lineup was determined using NASCAR's weighted formula that combines owner points, last Saturday's finish at Daytona, and the fastest lap of each driver in that event, which puts Chase Elliott on the pole for this event. The one difference is that all 16 playoff drivers will start in the first 16 spots, as will be the case for all playoff participants moving forward. Since pit stalls were selected solely by last week's finishing order, William Byron also has the premier pit stall choice for this weekend. With 366 laps in this event, finding two cars that can lead laps will be the optimal strategy for the event, but its length allows value plays to come from finish and place differential.

With that, let's preview the Cookout Southern 500 at Darlington

If you are looking for an action-packed way to get your sports fix, NASCAR may be a great avenue to explore. Far from just driving in circles, some of the world's best compete nearly every weekend from February to November on tracks across America. NASCAR drivers are scored ultimately based on how they finish in the race, how many spots they advance from their starting position, and how many laps they finish and lead. Avoiding drivers who crash out of the race is a must, of course!

1. Brett Moffitt ($8,900) - As predicted, it’s impossible to pass the leader at Gateway unless you wreck the leader, like Sheldon Creed did to Todd Gilliland. Moffitt is Creed’s teammate and a respectable driver. He would not wreck Creed even though Moffitt’s truck was faster.

2. Sheldon Creed ($10,100) - Several times Creed has apologized for dirty moves on the race track, but after a while, these apologies ring hollow when the driver continues to wreck himself and others. Creed is fast, but there is a giant target on his back, and strangely enough, the driver most aiming for that target is himself.

3. Austin Hill ($9,900) - Gateway was a test and Hill passed. The Hattori truck is known for its intermediate track speed, but Gateway has some short track tendencies and it definitely aligns with the championship race track at Phoenix. Hill finished third last week and proved that this team can compete anywhere.

4. Greg Biffle ($8,100) - Chase Elliott won in the No. 24 GMS truck. Sam Mayer almost won in this truck last week. Biffle probably won’t win, but he has a really good shot at grabbing a top 10. He wouldn’t be racing, if he didn’t think he could at least earn a top 10.

5. Zane Smith ($9,500) - What Smith has done is unbelievable. Who would believe that a rookie could win two races without practice? He just jumps in and wins like it’s a video game. Darlington is challenging, but he’s been up to every challenge thus far.

6. Bayley Currey ($6,500) - In Currey’s two races with Niece Motorsports, he’s finished 16th and 18th. It’s worth repeating that he is a talented race car driver, but he’s spent most of his career in terrible equipment.

7. Tyler Ankrum ($7,800) - Even with the new COVID weekend schedule, Ankrum lacks experience and it shows. This weekend, no one has experience. The teams and the drivers do not know what they are doing. Talent means everything this weekend, and this could be an opportunity for Ankrum to snag a win.

8. Todd Gilliland ($9,100) - Make note of last week. The result does not show it, but Gilliland was the best driver at Gateway. This adds to the theory floated last week that Gilliland’s struggles are due to a Truck Series schedule heavily focused on slot car racing. At short tracks, Gilliland has been great. A smart Xfinity owner should buy low on Gilliland stock because he would dominate a low downforce series.

9. Derek Kraus ($7,900) - Last week, he battled issues with his truck, but he was still able to finish 13th. If his team builds a decent truck like they have been doing almost every week this season, then Kraus should earn a top 10 finish.

10. Chandler Smith ($10,300) - It’s 2020, so it’s not surprising that one of the most promising prospects in years wrecks every single week. At Gateway, Smith had driven up to seventh place before he got loose and hit the wall. It’s only going to get harder this week at Darlington.

11. Grant Enfinger ($8,700) - The No. 98 truck was lacking speed last weekend and that is concerning moving forward. Enfinger is not talented enough or lucky enough to get by with an average truck. He needs a fast truck and luck on his side. If he doesn’t get both, then he’s irrelevant.

12. Trevor Bayne ($7,600) - Anyone in a Niece truck starting close to 30th is a solid play. That is, anyone except for Mark Smith. Bayne gets a price hike because of his name recognition, but it’s not too high. He’s a decent driver in good equipment and he should be fine in cash games.

13. Matt Crafton ($9,300) - Some of the old guys have actually raced trucks at Darlington. Crafton finished fourth in the last truck race at Darlington in 2011. It’s reasonable to expect that any notes that he has from this race are worthless. If the notes are worthwhile, then they’re sitting on a laptop buried under who knows what in the garage somewhere.

14. Ben Rhodes ($8,500) - He only has one top 10 finish in his last four races, but his driver rating has not changed much. Earlier this season, he was finishing slightly better than where he was running. Now, he is finishing slightly worse.

15. Christian Eckes ($10,600) - Is Eckes another Gilliland or Burton? Those drivers were major disappointments for KBM and Eckes is following in their path. Eckes was in position to win the last two Gateway races, but he let other drivers use him up. It’s strange that Kyle Busch drivers are so unlike Kyle Busch.

16. David Ragan ($9,700) - The long waited David Ragan truck race is upon us. This race was supposed to happen at Atlanta in March, but COVID happened instead. Then NASCAR abandoned qualifying, which locked Ragan out of races for months. Finally, he’ll jump into a 15th place DGR-Crosley truck and finish 15th.

17. Johnny Sauter ($11,000) - It’s time to write off another season for Sauter. His two seasons with ThorSport have been an abject failure. Sauter is talented, but it’s just not working out. If Sauter did not have sponsorship connections, he would have been shown the door by now.

18. Ty Majeski ($7,400) - He did what he was supposed to do last week. Majeski should earn 10th place finishes every week in his Niece truck. Once this becomes routine, then he should start expecting more. For now, anything better than 10th seems like a stretch for the rookie.

19. Raphael Lessard ($7,300) - The team and truck can not get any better, but the driver can. Last week, Lessard showed what he can do on a good day. He’s been a 10th-to-15th place driver throughout most of his rookie season, but he might be on the verge of putting it together. He only needs to get a little better to take advantage of the excellent equipment that he has been given.

20. Austin Wayne Self ($6,900) - There have been plenty of times where AWS has wrecked another driver. Last week, he got wrecked, but he did not take it well. AWS tried to go back on the track and retaliate, but he failed to wreck the other driver. Why does this matter? This week AWS will need to be on his best behavior in order to avoid a suspension. Hopefully, this means safe driving.
